First time post, I love snuff. I have made a successful switch from smoking to snuffing and I am trying to convert all those around me one nostril at a time, with fair results I might add. I’ve used various methods of transport to my nose, I have used a bullet, the back of my hand, pinching, spooning I feel like all have their benefits depending on your style and type of snuff. One way I have adopted has given results like no other… “tubing”. While watching a educational program on television one day I saw a fellow spending some time with a jungle tribe. Part of his time spent he participated in a “spiritual cleansing ritual”. Part of the ritual was to take ground up tobacco into a hollow U shaped tube (taken from a plant and dried) and to put one end into the nostril and to lightly blow through the other to expel the tobacco into the nasal cavity. Light Bulb for me, this tribe is snuffing. Sweet. My adaptation started with tubes of various length and gauge but the most useful and easiest to manage for me was the bendable straw cut to proper length for the idea. I will say there was apprehension the first few times. A friend tried it once and never again, but my Dad loves it and even now has a “parfait” (layers of different snuffs) several times daily. I have found this works particularly well for finer dryer snuffs so if your feeling adventurous or even a little primitive try tubing and let me know if you do, I’d like to have some feedback.
They actually blow a hallucinogenic through that bamboo tube. They blast everyone one at a time and then they sit there, covered in white powder, drooling on themselves with snot hanging from their schnozz. Looks like fun I prefer the back of hand or the pinch. Or, @ddavelarsen’s spoon!
They are ground up Yopo seeds that you are referring to.
I used to tube but now I milk shot my snuff. A milk shot is when you mix the snuff with milk and then while you are drinking it you have someone tell you a really funny joke and then the milk with snuff comes out your nose and there you go! At some point the names for such methods are going to become Urban Dictionary fodder! Ken
But can you do it while “Planking” on the edge of a skyscraper?
No but I have done it while slinking towards the cookie dish! Ken
I like the pinch and stuff for schmalzlers. I just get a few of the biggest pinches of snuff i can and jam it in my nose holes till they are full up. It’s a complete mess but you get the super flavor.
Milk shot lol, classic! My preferred method of taking snuff is the pinch even though I feel like it can be a little messy. The control is what I like about it. From jamming something like NTSU or a rich schmalzler to the delicate release of something like Sparrow or a toast. Have you noticed that some snuffs will taste almost completely different if using different methods? I carved a few spoons from an old birch staff and for a time was spooning mostly all of the time, so proud was I of my work. One of my favorites - 5Photo special I realized didn’t taste the same at all. Sure the menthol was still there but it seemed much sharper and tended to go much too far into my nose. When I realized this and switched to pinching I was really able to enjoy how well rounded the 5Photo special is the cool soothing menthol mixed with a touch of agricultural scent wrapped in a rich and velvety texture. I also found this one is a FAIL when it comes to tubing.
To be serious, pinch or back of hand. Depends on the container and the environment. Ken
@Glenno: if you liked using a tube, I highly recommend the Schnifter Snorter. I have all three and mostly use the “elephant” (extra wide tube) because it is new, but the original is the nicest in hand. I bought one when I quit smoking as I thought some “gear” to fiddle with would help. Most of my snuffing is from a bullet as I snuff like mad at work and it is a) discreet and b) easy to shove back in my pocket if I need to act quickly (which my job sometimes requires). I do some back of hand when I spill refilling the bullet, or I want a quick go from my heartwood creations snuffbox. I pinch less than I used to although I think it is the best method for overall enjoyment of things like F&T HDT. The bullet and a toast/scotch really changed the game for me when I finally quit smoking and I think I am “hooked” on it. Tapping the bullet, fiddling with it, feeling it in my pocket are all things I used to with a pack of smokes and a lighter. I like to do that with a snuffbox, too, but the first quick blast of Toque Natural Toast from a bullet on my first “no cigs day” changed everything.
I usually pinch, but it depends on the snuff to a great deal. Really strong snuff like McC Clove I still use a spoon so I can get small amounts; pinching that stuff is for the big boys! The only downside to pinching is the mess I make; puts a whole new spin on the phrase “brown nose.” Our member and friend @MaskedHedonist uses a clever Y-shaped tube that she made from soda straws and duct tape. That’s my kind of woman! I’ve never had the huevos to try tubing it though. Seems like a method designed for maximum pain to me…
Pinching for me, just more control. The exception is when I use something like ‘white’ and then a pinch is a bit too much, for the really fine snuffs I like to use a bullet. Ive never been that fond of bullets but for the hyper fine snuffs they work out very well. Sometimes people ask about getting a buzz from snuff as you might with a cigarette; for me a bullet filled with white is the closest thing to a cigarette type hit that you can get with snuff.
I usually prefer the pinch, but with snuffs like Poschl in the box I snuff off the back of the hand.
Well, the above described snuff tube would not behave the way a snorter does. I gather it works on the same principle as the snuff carberateour, and essentaially the snuff is blown into the nose rather than sucked in. This could make a huge difference. I’ve generally avoided snorters, as they cause one to pull the snuff too far into the nose and decrease any pleasurable flavor sensations, while increasing pain. The South American natives often even have a friend blow the snuff in for them, but self made contraptions such as the one pfaber has on his yahoo group: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/The\\_nasal\\_snuff\\_group\\_forum/photos/album/84622158/pic/list look to be equally effective.
Me pinch too for more control sniffingwise and I simply don’t care about the mess anymore.
I prefer to use the spoon Dave made for me!! The flavors are more pronounced and crisp.
I miss my spoon. I want a spoon. I can’t justify the cost even though they are cheap.
@bob try a pipe tool spoon. They can be found for under a dollar.
Yes this is what I found as Xander has deduced It is a completely different sensation than a sniffing tube though if done too hard or with too much can be a very intense or un-pleasurable experience. It has taken me some practice but I do like the blast that I get. I must say though that I am more partial to the stronger nicotine snuffs. I know that not everyone is like me in this regard and taking that in mind I find that with some finesse I can control quantity and strength well.
@snuffnpuff I agree! Dave’s spoon is perfect size, dosage, everything! It fits my tripletech so well it seems meant for it! One heaping spoon per nostril and I’m good to go!
hate the check tools (other check I know). Don’t even like them for pipes, what you don’t got fingers? the tool sppon tried it as a snuff ssponn didn’t like it or the keys that stick on my keyboard. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I got bored today and decided I’d make my own snuff spoon just for kicks. I used only a twig and a pocket knife. I ended up making two because I found it to be so fun. I know absolutely nothing about wood carving so please don’t laugh at my neolithic craftsmanship. I got fancy and used the inner bark fibers to make the handle decor on the larger one. I just used the bark from the same twig. I made the little one with a hollow bowl but the larger one I opted for a shovel tip design.
@spyro - well done! Those actually look really cool.
Thanks Bodger. I never realized how much wood has to teach until this silly experiment. Maybe someday my great-grand children will rummage thru my snuff collection and get a giggle out of finding these odd artifacts.
@spyro that spoon laying on your snuffbox looks like the first spoon I made! Almost identical in fact!
Transistor, The project was a lot of fun. I’m sure you know what I mean now when I say that wood has a lot to teach when you try working with it using only your bare hands and a knife. I’m tempted to try again using bone, horn, or even large hoof shavings. I also have an hypothesis that I can make a stone spoon using only two rocks and a kinfe.
@spyro you inspired me to have a go at carving my own spoon so here it is. It took about an hour. I made it out of an English oak twig. I must ad this is the first time I have tried carving anything. I agree with you it is a lot of fun.
Bob, If you want a cheap spoon, get a Mccdonalds straw, cut a cm down the middle at the end then trim the length to fit in your snuff tin.Im sure someones already said this but Ive not read all the thread:) Better still take pinches.
theratroom, Nice job on your spoon. Glad to hear you had as much fun as I did. Its a great way to relax for an hour.
It sounds crazy, but i have found one fun alternative method to snuff is to take the bulb off of a camera air dusting brush and use it to suck up snuff and then puff it into my nose. It actually works great with really fine snuffs.
I’m not sure about this, but I seem to recall seeing or reading something about a native tribe that practiced blowing powdered concoctions into each others noses with a hollow reed. I don’t think it was snuff, probably some hallucinogen or healing powder, etc… Seems like a good way to pass a virus to me.
yes that happens. Tribal living is a good way to pass a virus though not compared to town and city living. lately been back of the handing it and it works great for me.
I suppose thats a bit like a decongestant nasal spray
@spyro Yeah it was a hallucinogen. i saw some documentary about that. They were blasting it into one another’s nose through this long tube. More like blasting it all over their face!
lol, yeah, that sounds familiar. Similar to the Scar Face snuffing technique.
Does anyone use the spoon to take the snuff from the tin oder snuffbox to the back of the hand? That’s my method when I am not in a to formal setting.
I rarely ever use a “spoon” but I do use a pocket knife blade as a scoop if I’m just shoveling out of the tin and don’t want dirty fingers. The rest of the time I use back-of-the-hand and occasionally pinch if I’m in a hurry or its a special snuff that actually tastes better pinched. The spoons I made along with a couple I own are hardly ever used. I recommend carving your own tho for the pure enjoyment of it. If you really want a fancy spoon for your gear collection, don’t forget to look at salt spoons. Some of them are pretty ornate and they are usually cheap.
I miss my spoon
I use a spoon in tins that I cant get my fingers into the bottom of. Like F&T or 6photo. Besides that I pinch, I get more flavour from pinching.
@Glenno @Snuffster @Xander - I tried the tubing version, as suggested by Glenno, of blowing the snuff into the nose with your mouth. I used clear flexible tubing like the kind used for aquarium airpump setups. I cut a segment as long as my index finger. For snuffing, I hook the tube under my index finger and hold a short end with my thumb (for my mouth) and the long end is held in place with the middle finger. Even simpler way to picture it - im holding a “J”. I dip the long end in the snuff box a few times until I have 1/2 inch or so (of Quit usually). Then: 1) (IMPORTANT), I hold my breath, 2) long tube goes in my nose and aim at the sweet spot, 3) short end in the mouth, 4) while still holding the breath, use the cheeks to blow a quick but small blast. I like the control since I can aim where I want. I like that you get zero throat snuff since, if you are holding your breath, it just cant get there (but it CERTAINLY get s as high up as you want). I like the feeling of my scalp and eyeballs on fire when I aim 1/2" of Quit at my sweet-spot
Spyro & Theratroom - why buy when you can make your own? Much more fun. Not a spoon user myself (leave that to the sneshin Scots), but your efforts look very good.
I have been doing nose kisses lately. (using facial muscles).
Thank you for the nice words PhilipS. I never realized how fun and educational it could be to carve on a twig. I don’t look down on gear collectors tho since I can relate to the appeal of it.
