Just curious because Im finding my purchases are being more and more influenced because I just find tap/shake boxes work better for me where as I just make a mess with tins. Anyone else enjoy the boxes better or tins, and just curious why you prefer one over another.

F

I prefer the tins - I can immediately get out of them as much as I need. The tap boxes come out in nothing - then spots and then loads and then nothing - I hate that. I also like to look at and smell my snuff.

J

What snuff comes with a choice between a tap box or tin?

G

none that I know of, which sucks. Lately ive only been buying snuffs in tap boxes because of the boxes, i prefer them because of my work enviroment

A

Tap boxes are ok for German-style oily snuffs but lethally drying on water based snuffs. I prefer tins anyway because I always pinch, except Toque tins, which are poor quality.

N

Tins for home, tap boxes for out.

S

Tins can be used everywhere, and tap boxes suck. Snuff boxes are even better.

O

After almost forswearing anything to do with Samuel Gawith due to the evil turn-snuff-to-dust tap box they insist on using, I would need to say a tin. If dispensing by way of tap vs pinch is appropriate, required, preferred etc., simply slide the top of your slide-top snuff box open just a scosh and tap away! Love this forum. I R larnin’ snuff stuff

S

i’d say tins. i like to see my snuff, too, and they seem a bit more airtight than tap boxes.

B

The poeschl tap boxes (redbull, apricot) seem pretty tight. Ive taken to using my used up redbull tappers to carry some around from my big tins.

F

The poeschl tap boxes are indeed pretty tight - my Red Bull was opened ages ago and the snuff is still like new. The only downside to tins are WoS tins. I have no idea how they get that amount of snuff into the tins. If you’ve got shaky hands - forget it. S’ppose it’s not really a downside - fitting more snuff than is physically possible into a tin is never really a downside.

E

The reason the Pöschl tap boxes seem okay is because the snuff in them is moistened with paraffin oil, not water. If you put an English snuff in a Pöschl tap box it will dry out just like it would in an SG tap box. The problem with the Wilson’s tins is that the lid sits higher than the rim of the bottom part of the tin.

S

Tins.

P

I like pinching from a tin or snuff box. But I do sometimes sniff from the back of my hand as well. OTD has already mentioned using the Patrick box for that purpose. Push back the lid slightly and pour snuff onto your hand from the corner of the box. Perfect!

J

Tapboxes are convenient when on the go, but my preferred method of snuff-taking is a pinch between the fingers. So I vote tins.

C

Tins. As everyone has said, English snuff dies in a tapper. A perfect example are the GH taps vs. the 25g tubs.

T

I used to think I liked tappers more, but now it’s tins. I used to always snuff off the back of the hand, but these days I pinch. And with a tin, and can use the back of the hand if I want to. And I have no problem sticking a tin of Wilsons in my front pants pocket, or inside jacket pocket.

D

… or buy in tins and transfer to (wooden) tap box. That’s my own preference!

D

I cannot stand the tap boxes. I almost always end up getting much more than I wanted, and I waste a lot of snuff with them trying to put it back inside. I much prefer the tins although I most always carry my snuff in a snuff box or smash box. I found some great smash boxes at a local tobacco shop. They are as large as a 10g wilsons tin and flat like a tin and they fit in my back pocket nicely.

B

I dont have a problem with the tap boxes. I tested a red bull tap box an hour ago by submerging it in hot water, and nothing seems to have leaked in-so id take that as being reasonably airtight. I was also thinking of making up some sort of gasket to improve sealing but i dont think I will bother in light of the test.

C

Do the same with a Samuel Gawith tap or Gawith Hoggarth. If they were airtight, they wouldn’t dry out as they do.

B

One thing I hate about tap boxes is it’s hard to tell how much snuff is left. One thing I wonder is why no one makes a hybrid snufftin/tapbox I’am sure it could be done. Plus I’ve noticed tap boxes seem more expensive for the amount of snuff in them then tins do. The drying out thing though that is the worst thing about tap boxes. I’ve used old tap boxes kind of like a snuff box they work great with about a days worth of snuff in them. Water tight doesn’t mean air tight either. Though I like tap boxes for sharing snuff.

P

@bob, I agree. My biggest issue with tap boxes is that I never know how much is left in there. A transparent tap box will solve this problem. I find the boxes with the opening on top OK because the stopper works like a plug. It’s the ones with the sliding cover which cause the problems for me. And the worst boxes (sorry Jaap) are the ones from The Hollandse Meulen.

B

Yes they are. Especialy since some of their snuffs look like someones already been snuffing it since it doesn’t fill the container.

C

There is a hybrid box made. Rajek’s used to sell them. It had a slider for tapping and a lid for pinching. They were only about $2 and had a wonderful picture of the Zugspitze on them. Made by Poeschl.

P

For the reason provided by Ermtony I would never buy English snuff in a tap-box. Tins are better and drums or canisters better still.

X

Jaap’s boxes are transparent as requested, you can see exactly how much is left. They are also a hybrid box! All you have to do is pop the top off and you can squeeze thumb and forefinger in and take a pinch.

X

grrrr. corrected. (Maybe you should)

T

I prefer a tap box because I like to use the back of the hand method.

C

Tins.

B

Tins all the way. I’m actually quite surprised that anyone would vote for tap boxes. They’re the devil’s work, I tells ye !

S

I initially liked the Samuel Gawith plastic tap boxes because they didn’t corrode. However, my opinion changed when the snuff went dry! They are totally unsuitable for English snuffs, and I hope one day they will go back to tins.

X

_I’m actually quite surprised that anyone would vote for tap boxes_I’m surprised anyone would make them! The concept surely is based on the German snuff bottle. The tap box must have first come from Pöschl, and then other companies, including English ones, have copied it. They, wrongly thinking, that the tap box must have something to do with Pöschl’s success.

B

There are some sad things about these tapboxes. One thing I think they stand out more in a storedisplay. Oh yeah I definatly use the windmill container as a box and pop the top off. Though I’ve never had a dryed out snuff of theirs. Maybe I’am just lucky that way.

T

I usually carry both in my pocket. Tapbox at work or outside, tin in the pub.

W

Tins, tins, tins! Tap boxes are totally unsuitable. With tins snuff doesn’t dry out as quick, you can see how much you have left, and you can take as much snuff as you like in one go. Stefan

S

Ditto ditto ditto! The only exception for me is that cool snuff launcher by Gleisterprise(?).

F

I’ve said that the only thing that annoys me about WoS tins is that the snuff spills over the sides. Now I’m wondering would a wooden snuff box overcome this if I purchased one, or do they have the same kind of problem? Edit - just checked the dimensions on paper and a wooden one is big enough. Having said that, a finished 25g tin of WoS with a 10g tin emptied into it would be brilliant. Sorry - I’m having a bit of a slow brain week.

M

About a snuff box, Frosted…what most would recommend, myself included, is putting only a days worth of snuff into it and using it quickly, as most snuffs dry out after a few days in a box. Some would stay longer, of course, like a toast or scotch, but not much longer, before it starts to smell…off. Patrick Collins boxes are great, and some members have spoken highly of Heartwood boxes. The German tap-out type evidently don’t hold finer snuffs, but work well aside from that. Plastic smash boxes that seal tight are also available.Nicotine Rush has all of that stuff.Snuffstore.co.uk has some of that stuff too, if you are in the UKPersonally, I’ve been known to decant Wilson’s snuffs into empty Toque tins, and swap the labels, but I mostly don’t even bother.

F

Thanks Mat - good tips. I’ve got a couple of Toque tins on the way - I’ll try that.

Tins. Specifically SG and Toque tins. Snuff should be pinched for pre-warming, and greater control in use, allowing you to work out the slumps as the snuff is delivered. I also like to be more tactile with my snuff, and the pinch allows me to assess the condition of each pinch and regulate my sniff better. Back of hand, boxcar and spoon also result in me wearing more snuff than with the pinch. YMMV

T

RESURRECTION thread! Tins are better for storage purposes obviously, but for ease of use, nothing beats a tapbox. Unfortunately, as we all know, too many snuffs only come in tapboxes, and reach you so dried out that you never get to experience them at their best. Personally, I’d like to see pre-filled tapboxes fall by the wayside.

J

Tins for sure. I have no need for the tapbox

S

Agreed tins all the way

C

Tins. That’s a function of my preference to pinch and primary use of English snuff, which is not suited for tappers.

X

F&T has those round 5g tapboxes and you can also get 20g tin.
