Mr. Bes’ tap boxes are much maligned, but I happen to love them. They’re easy to use, keep the snuff in excellent condition, filter out the annoying lumps and are big enough to be easily retrieved from the pocket.

I cut the plastic screen out, but yes they are good tap boxes. they seem to keep the snuff fresh

I must disagree with the “keep the snuff in excellent condition”-part. I had to rehydrate most of my Windmill snuffs. This was before I started to decant them in airtight containers.

I have to side with Jari_T on this one. The tap boxes of the dutch windmills do not keep the snuff fresh (at least in the long run). This I learned after taking a pinch of Macuba from a tapbox and later the same day having the same snuff from a 100 g tub, the tap box Macuba paled in comparison! I must remark that I find Mr. Bes snuffs truly wonderful but the tap boxes are awful!

M

Well, they suit my needs. That’s all I can really speak of, of course.

@Malatesta: Thank you for the compliment. You should know that the boxes ware originally designed for spices and donated to us by one of our sponsors. Regrettably this was a one time donation, so next year or so we have to look for other boxes. Jaap Bes.

when I stated that the tap boxes seemed to keep the snuff fresh I was comparing it to other tap boxes and snuff boxes. Yes airtight in the refrigerator is the best, because some of Jaap’s snuffs can be subject to mold. I think it’s a matter of how fast one is going to use the snuff. Some of Jaap’s snuffs I decant, but if I favor one of his snuffs, then I just put it in the refrigerator over night when I go to bed because I feel I’ll use it fast enough.

I think I might see the difference here, and why I like them. I’m a one or two types of snuff in my pocket fellow. Whatever is in my pocket is what I have, so it gets used quickly. Perhaps the reality is the boxes seal well for three or four days supply but not for a week/month? A compromise position betwee the pro and anti elements?

Oh, I’ve certainly liked all Windmill snuffs I’ve tried. I guess it’s a question of what is your ambient humidity like, and how long does it take to hoover a boxful of snuff into ones snuff holes. I ordered about a dozen sorts at one time, and lot of them ended up bone dry in their original tap boxes.

I don’t like them much. they’re too big. They’re not tap boxes they’re shake boxes seriously don’t tap out the snuff shake it like it’s salt. They don’t hold the snuff well and feel like they’re designed for spices for some reason. The snuffs are great. some of my favorites actually. Great news in my opinion about the tap boxes. I agree with the basic sentiments during the first few days the packing seems great second week not so much.

I have some tap boxes with snuffs I like to try first, and some in the 100g tubes. But for both of them: I refill my snuffbox with it. So I don’t carry the tap things around. You can also cut the tape and take the lid off for easier snuff taking.
