Similar to “Pen Pall” but exchanging snuff samples instead of a letter via a envelope. :-B

J

I’m in.

N

I’d really like to see this take off amongst current members. Nothing like getting a good sample of some fresh or “properly aged” snuff to try. Could also benefit manufacturers on the sales standpoint. The more people that try something that they may not normally try at a fraction of the price may increase production or keep the varieties at least staying alive if there is demand. Not to mention you get to try snuffs you may not even be able to get or can not afford via the limited sources we have to chose from. Keep it under 28gr. Including envelope, ink and stamp only amounts to under 50

H

That’s a really cool idea. I’m in.

N

cents. I’m sure any abroad postage would not be breaking the bank either.

A

I love this idea! Not sure if i’d be able to participate, i’ll get the AFP dropping by asking why im importing something without declaring it. Worth a shot though!

Y

@nicmizer

Need some more info on how exactly do we get started.

What are the rules.

Do We just put a baggie of snuff in the mail  and wait to get something back ? Is there something in place to prevent us from getting something we have already tried ? How about international shipping, If I send to someone and include an israeli postage stamp I doublt it would help them.

A

@yiisraeldov you can only use postage stamps issued by your country. . Thank Charles Ponzi for that.

B

I believe the limit for a letter stamp is one ounce. That includes the whole package including envelope and all packing material. Also the common letter cannot exceed 1/4 inch in thickness.

In the past, when I sent samples i would tape the baggies to a piece of paper sometimes to a greeting card. The postage sorting machines can be brutal. I have received parcels that have suffered damage often.

Take in account that some people have busy lives and can’t always get to you right away; also are those who have short memories, and stuff that distract them from completing their promise promptly. So unless you have a transaction of monetary value, don’t throw a tantrum if their offer never arrives .

Y

Again, I’m still not 100% sure on how this works? Can someone give a concrete example ?

J

I’m not sure how sending powdered tobacco in a “crack baggy” would work with international customs, but price wouldn’t be an issue I don’t believe.  The last time I sent a letter overseas I think I was told that an envelope costs only $1 to anywhere in the world.  That was a few years ago.  I wouldn’t mind paying a buck.

Yisraeldov raises a good point regarding not getting snuff you already have.  With some of you guys I don’t know how you could NOT get something you already have.  The only way I can think to do it is get a list of every snuff out there and have people put their names next to the ones they would like to receive.

I’m willing to kick it off by offering some scotch to whoever is interested.

A

possibly if we can create a new page with members listing the snuffs they have on offer, and/or snuff they would like to try. Then interested parties can message whomever has the stock then work something out. I’d be interested in testing the Aussy customs, I would love if this would work here. Though @nicmizer probablly already has something in mind.

Also isnt there a larger letter size? I just ordered a 60g Boveda pack from melbourne in a letter which surely would exceed the smaller 1 ounce limit.

C

I’m in … I’ll send factory produced snuff as well as some of my own whole-leaf blends.

As a side note, if someone sends you a sample of a snuff you already have a bunch of just forward it on to your next recipient.  It would be difficult to maintain a page of all the participating members and every type of snuff they have.  Just a thought!

J

I wouldn’t want to get snuff I already have just to send it to the next guy.

There is a page somewhere that has just about every snuff under the sun listed.  If we were to get that and give everyone a deadline on when they needed to get their name on it, it could be done that way.

B

Why don’t everyone just post what they have for the Postage snuff samples in the buy sell trade thread. Then interested parties can respond with what they have, Via Personal message.

B

Also Post What you are interested in trying and some one who has it can contact you By Personal message.

N

What I’ve been thinking. Keep it simple and not a hassle with some complex way that requires rules and procedures that are required for such a simple task. Pack it with the requested snuff, stuff it in the envelope, lick it and stick it in the mail box. The only real hard part is to be able to clearly get the correct address on it and not forget the stamp! With the thought of “Pen Pal” in mind, your sending something with the anticipation of receiving something in return. That is the idea of this concept. If anybody has more possible ways to make this easier please make comment so we can try getting it going. It does not have to be a guessing game or carp shoot. Just communication between two people about what makes them both happy.

N

This could be done right here on this topic thread without clogging up the buy-sell-trade topic that is well deserved for its intended purpose. This seem that it would work there as well but should considered as a step brother to it and should be kept separate IMO.

A

How would we go about sending to members in the EU? As in if they find it will they confiscate it, or would we be looking at fines and what not? I’m not 100% in the loop with the current EU restrictions.

N

Maybe @Roderick can chime in on your concern @Aamon.

P

I was on a pipe forum, and one person started a parcel pass. They put several samples of pipe tobacco in and mailed it to the next person in line. That second person would take a sample out, put a new sample in, then mail it to the next person. Then the next person repeated, and so forth. There ended up being two different boxes going on, one for the USA, one for Europe so shipping wouldn’t be too expensive.

B

I suggest you just bomb everyone on your list with everything you got. Tobacco Cigars Snuff Snus Dokha Chew Dip and any thing else you want to surprise them with.  This is a terrible dilemma you get yourself into But you do get to try stuff that you may not considered using . God Damn the Pusher man.

C

@Psicko - yeah, a box pass.  Could be fun - throw a bunch of snuffs in, take a bunch out.  Good way to share things you really love, and ditch things you don’t, given that tastes vary so widely.  And like @basement_shaman says, it could also include cigars, pipe tobacco etc. if anyone chooses.

N

It just seems to me that others are just trying to derail the initial idea. Envelope with small amount of snuff in exchange for the same. Keep it simple not stupid!

C

8-}

B

:(|) Hope everything works out. And thanks for the Ambrosia sample. You’re a stand up guy

A

I’d have to agree keep it as simple as possible. large tobacco packages would be a pain in the ass especially if you have to pay tax on your tobacco.  Envelope size would work well and wont break the bank, for those that need to pay tax it doesnt quite make sense paying tax on the entire large package if youre only going to take one or two things out and replace it anyway with your own stock.

N

The box idea is BS, sure it would probably start out with mostly good things. The next guy would be happy to take what he likes and throw in a rusted tin of what use to be good-after dipping his fingers into everything else to boot. Off it go’s… to the next to person to take advantage of whatever he finds to his liking. Probably opens the tin of rusty snuff, closes the door on that and throws it back to the box. Opens the next tin, takes a pinch and it just doesn’t sit well in the nose so back in the box it go’s. So let’s try another, humm… this is to my liking, I’ll take this and throw in this a can of chew that somebody gave me a year and half ago and a cigar that is stale. On this will go till probably the fourth person before it is really trash bound. Along the lines of this concept will be some dissatisfied and disappointed people I’m sure. Also leave a trail of people that will be blamed, shamed and accused of passing the buck with a shirt smell on it. This box concept can work but is certain to fail at some point. Bad, Bad idea IMO.

N

You could start a thread in the Bazaar where members who are interested can post the snuffs they would like to sample and people with those snuffs can contact them via PM and set up a sample trade, this is the simplest way I can think of to get this in motion.

C

@nicmizer not that I’m pushing for it because I won’t be participating anyway, but your scenario assumes that most people on this forum are selfish assholes.  I’ve taken part in many box passes on cigar and pipe forums, and as a rule people generally put in more than they take, and the last person on the list ends up with a big box full of great stuff.  Only once did a guy abscond with a box, and then everyone chipped in to send cigars to guys who got stiffed.

B

@n9inchnails Could it get pinned to the top, so it can stay active and not get buried? I am sure ? new members and old Snufftoneiums  alike will keep it going, time will tell. But it just may catch on as a popular thread.

N

I can make it an Announcement so it stays at the top of the page, but if it remains fairly inactive I’ll just make it a regular thread.

A

Okay who’s interesting in doing this? Can we get a list going, try to get this idea on the go.

Anybody got scales so we know how many grams of snuff we can fit in a letter. basement_shaman reckons 1 ounce including packing at no more than 1/4" thick. I agree with basement_shaman and think we should include a card or something solid to protect the baggies inside also.

Y

maybe tape it between 2 index cards… ?  Do we really want to be getting down to using a scale ? I would say put about a teaspoon worth …

A

@yisraeldov it would be useful to know the maximum of how many different types and sizes we can have in there at anyone time. That way we can get an estimate of how much needs to be taken out or replaced with as to not exceed the limit. I have no idea how much a letter would weigh as well as the packing, who knows maybe we can only have 1 or 2 grams of snuff so in that case we could maximize selection.

Y

@aamon ? I thought the whole Idea was you send a sample to one person and they send you a sample back ? What is this about taking out and replacing ? I think the rules are getting to complicated.

A

@yisraeldov ahh yea that sounds simpler. For some idea I was thinking about the tobacco parcel mentioned earlier though with a letter instead. My apologies it has been a long day.  I-)

N

Chime time as time is short to do so do to my location in the Northern pan handle of Idaho. Currently almost none to some at best net access. Reset to go from page one with the basic simplest way to make a simple exchange with others without extra expense or to much effort. Start small and it will grow to whatever people care to take it from there when it comes to sample size. Plenty enough snuff will fit in a letter envelope for both to figure if they like it or not and some for a later date to try as to evaluate opinion. Both parties agree “TRADE” they both agree makes them happy. Many small sample or just one will not at all be making the envelope a bulge with common sense. “price of a first class stamp” is still the idea. My offer-up list for swap will be posted the beginning of next week HERE when I get back to home base. (June-5) Will be very out for further comment till next weekend as no internet access until then as of “now”

My little true and simple story:
a fellow snuffer said once that he didn’t have access to european snuffs but only indians.I told him if he’d like to send him some free samples(like the Dholakia Company does).
He pm me his address and I sent him some stuff.A big envelope about 100g snuff in small bags.Total weight 150g.From Greece to India registered letter cost about 6-7 euro. Not a very big deal!
He is happy and I’m glad that some fellow snuffer is enjoying some stuff that otherwise he couldn’t.
Maybe the simplest idea is someone make a request(in logical scale)and anyone volunteer…pm him…etc…
sorry for my english,I hope you get my meaning

S

I kicked this thread back up at the suggestion of nicmizer and because postage stamp samples are just a great idea. As mentioned previously in this thread, it’s a great way to try new snuffs without the risk of investing in something that turns out not to be likable. It’s also great for trying unique homemade snuffs. Maybe some of those who are interested in the practice can chime in so new exchanges can take place?

A

I think that the idea of postage stamp sized samples of snuff,  is not to be sniffed at.

:))

N

Mr. Rogers commemorative US postal stamps are coming out soon! Been informed that they are of the “scratch and sniff” variety that have never been released before. I’m not for sure but hope they will smell like his trusty Cardigan sweater.

A

It depends upon which part of his anatomy you scratch.

A

I’ve seen this done elsewhere with success: A ‘free sample for the next poster’ game. The person who kicks it off will say something like “Offering a 20g tin of l260.” Now there’s L260 up for anyone to request, but the person who takes it has to offer up their own sample for anyone else to grab to keep the game going. Something such as: “I’ll take that l260. Offering a 8g tin of Highland Ice.” And the game goes on. Addresses exchanged over PM It might be best to include what country you’re from when offering, such as 'I’ll take that l260. Offering a 8g tin of Highland Ice. Ships from USA"

N

Works great. Used this wonderful concept last week with great results with @SammyD13.
