As some of you may know, the only snuff I’ve had as of yet has been W.E. Garrett Sweet, of which I was not a fan and was left wanting. So I was of course excited when my first order from Mr. Snuff arrived and had a 100g bag of Schmalzler SF, something quite different from what I was stuck with!
Opening the bag, I get a strong earthy aroma, much like dark soil. It’s pleasant, and the tobacco smell is not strong or overpowering, but layered on top.
Taking a pinch, I was surprised by the nuances in the smell. There was definitely that rich earthy aroma, which once in the nose I would describe as a churned garden bed, that rich, black soil of a well composted garden that’s been tilled over is the smell I get. And after that is a smell almost as strong, a nutmeg and fruitcake smell that mixes very well and pleasantly.
The snuff is easy to take, not likely to hit your throat or make you sneeze. It is decently moist and holds form well when pinched.
The disappointing mark I would have to give is the length of the aroma, I found that the scent would only last strongly for a few minutes, and after that would disappear and only catch a ghosting every so often. This may not be a problem if you take more regular pinches, but I am preferring to stay hands-off and let the snuff do its work, and I find that the Schmalzler SF fades faster than I’d like it to, like an old camaro that passes you on the street, you’d wish it would stay a little longer so you could admire it.
This could be a daily snuff depending on one’s preferences, but I don’t believe I would choose it as mine. This is an after-dinner snuff, a relaxing in the armchair snuff, not a regular pincher, but a slice of fruitcake, with a dash of nutmeg on top.
