Pöschl on Snuff

There´s an interesting article about Pöschl and an interview in the latest Tabak Zeitung. Besides pipe tobacco, RYO and their line of cigarettes, they also talk about snuff. I´ll translate the best I can: “…Pöschl was able to increase their sales in 2008 for the first time after several years of decreasing numbers in Germany. Also in several international markets, some without any former traditions in snuff, show skyrocketing sales. The times for a snuff renaissance are looking bright. Snuff has a very good margin, presentation doesn´t require too much space and only small investments. But at the same time snuff requires alot of explanation. That´s why we´re offering workshops and information material, including the new Schnupftabak-Lexikon. Especially in times of limited smoking areas, snuff is offering a good alternative for tobacco enjoyment. But we are standing behind smoking and don´t want to drive smokers to snuffers. Patrick Engels expresses his discomfort about several recent articles which fail to treat the different smokeless tobacco products reasonably. In regards of health risks the WHO claims in their latest release to the topic of “Smokeless tobacco”, that several studies couldn´t find any evidence, that nasal snuff could increase the risk to acquire cancer. Snuff these days is in accounts of numbers not of a big importance, but it has a rich tradition and once was the mother of the european tobacco industry.”

But we are standing behind smoking and don´t want to drive smokers to snuffers. Slightly convoluted thinking, but as smoking bans increase and consumers become more acquainted with alternatives, it stands to reason that the scales will tip eventually in favour of smokeless. The last ‘age of Snuff’ was in the 1850’s (Debatable, but oh well.) The 21’st just might be the start of a new one.

Yes, they sell alot RYO tobacco these days (Pueblo, Red Bull…) and I guess they just didn´t want to piss on their competitor´s legs. Still, cigarette sales are increasing globally. But they decrease in the so called “first world”. I´d love to see the renaissance of this great product.

Why do we not have the Poschl Alpina, Andechs, Lowen-Preis, Schmalzlers, and others available in the US market. And I see the British sources seem to carry even less Poschl products than do the US sources I’m aware of.

Nicotine Rush announced (at their blog) several weeks ago, they´ll offer the whole Pöschl range. What´s taking them so long remains a mistery, though.

_But we are standing behind smoking and don´t want to drive smokers to snuffers._Which to me is a conflict of interest. I said once before that if all there was in the world to snuff was Pöschl, I’d go back to smoking. That seems to fit into their plan. Kind of like the US “snus” being made by cigarette companies and edging out or preventing competition. The only local shop that carried Swedish snus recently replaced the little General filled snus fridge they had with a Camel one. When asked, they said it really didn’t sell for them. sad days

I see them as a tobacco company that stands for people’s rights, and that includes smoking. They don’t want to make non smokers snuff, but offer all their products to people who chose to use them.

Thanks Redstar for translating the report for us. Fascinating.

I will be really happy when Nicotine Rush, or someone in the US starts carrying the full line of Pöschl snuff. While I do enjoy Gletscher prise and a few of their "standards’, their schmalzlers are absolutely wonderful. Perlesreuter, doppelaroma d, and bayern prise brasil are high on my list of snuffs to never run out of.

Don’t forget my beloved Südfrucht. Tom will have the Pöschls soon, of course that’s never soon enough!!!

yes, yes, yes, all bad things I say about Pöschl do not apply to their schmalzlers. Their schmalzlers are fantastic. Also take what I say with a grain of salt. Many of their snuffs are not terrible, just hard to use frequently.

The only one that creates any real trouble for me is Gletsher Prise. I think it’s made from the horns of the devil.

I love all the Poschls, but maybe my nose doesn’t. I love menthols, but they give me sinus reactions.

no cstokes it’s not made from the horns of the devil. You’re obviously confusing it bacon cheese (hence it’s nickname old goat.)

Poschl snuffs will always be special for me since I started out with them and they have a nostalgic appeal. Admittedly, some have been eclipsed by my exposure to other snuffs but I’d love to see the full line available in the US. I’m ready for the snuff revolution but don’t overlook the negatives that could come with it. Namely, higher prices/taxes and the wrathful eye of the puritanical, anti-tobbacco nazis and their reefer-madness rhetoric.

@Spyro: Yes, it´s pretty much the same for me. Started with Pöschl and wouldn´t have ended up with many marvelous snuffs from all over the world at all, if it wasn´t for them. Still, some Pöschl snuffs ARE really very good, like Ozona President. And their Schmalzler are just superb.

I always wanted to try Schmalzler, but we cant buy it in Croatia only Ozona President,Gawith Apricot and GP. They aren’t eithe rplaning to bring out other snuffs in Croatia

I love Poschl snuffs and always will. It is the first decent snuff I used and therefor I will always have a soft spot for it. Their schmalzlers are great snuffs and I adore the black tinned Gawith Apricot. @ Roam, there are many ways to skin a cat! I KNOW that some of our members will be willing to help you. You just have to ask.

My ex girlfriend turned me on to snuff years ago, with a black plastic tap can of poschl, something mentholated that I fear is no longer made. I haven’t ben able to find it anywhere, but I remember the scent clear as day. I remember it was a bit dry, pretty light in color, and burned like the dickens to my uninitiated nose.

I like some Poschl snuffs and i ve been using them a lot lately . Rajeks have a lot of them and i am thinking about ordering the ones that i have not tried yet like Mix Fruit , Red Bull Aromatic and the Schmalzlers.
