Pöschl Gletscher Prise (Review & Discussion)

This the the flagship product of the world’s biggest snuff producer, so its bound to get good revews simply becuase its so well known and has been distributed so aggressively. I for one am not in love with it. The menthol while moderate for Pöschl is still much more than I care for. The Columbia Oil is a name I once thought they made up. I later discovered it is a reference to Columbia Fir tree oil. Likely it is a mixture of some various herbal elements that provide a bit of flavor, and a piney/fir-like note. It has a reasonable nose cleariing effect, but of course the typical waxy moisture base of Pöschl will make it stick in my throat. One to finish and forget about. Notes: Name translates to “Glacier Pinch” in English. First tried: February 2009 Rating: 2/5 Grind: demigros Moisture: moist (oil moistened) Style: mentholated modern German snuff

I love this stuff. It works well, however,I also like English snuff. I’m a general Pöshl fan.

Some love it, some hate it. In the end, a classic for sure.

I like it enough to use it in the morning to clear my nose and head. For me, its one worth having on hand, but I don’t get much tobacco flavor from it. Its middle of the road snuff. I do, however like the 15gm big box, makes it easy to carry in my p ocket. When its empty, I will refill it with something else in the menthol class.

I only use it when I have a cold, best snuff for colds IMHO.

I find it weak. the owner of international tobacco KoP mall ask me to make him an offer on the almost full case. I told him I get back to him on that. It’s been two years and probably still in the display case.

it is weak, i used to use it pre-bed because i found it soothing, but ive gone off poschl in general.

Personally I am a fan of Poschl products. Find this one to be a very good mild snuff (in terms of Vitamin N and overall strength). This tends to be the one that enjoy as mid-afternoon pick me up. Smooth and extremely refreshing, always a great way to get a second wind.

Gletscher Priese made it’s way in to my rotation today. I like it, but prefer the strength and texture of both 6p No.66 and WoS SM, so it won’t be back in for a while. I wonder if I’m off Poschl at the moment; Red Bull was in and out the same way a few days back, and I haven’t been able to get near their Gawith Apricot for quite some time. 6photo and WoS menthols seem to have been ‘doing it for me’ much better than Poschls recently, but I can’t quite put my finger on why; ah well, best get back to the snuff boxes and figure it out!

I dont think I’ve had a Poschl snuff yet :-/ although I’ve kind of fallen out with anything that comes in a plastic box :-S

@50ft_trad Poschl’s tap boxes are very good at keeping the snuff fresh if that is a concern.

@thorgrimnr … long term? Right now I have a huge backlog of snuffs I need to work through before I start diversifying further. I seem to have too many snuffs open for too long because I’ve not been making enough headway into them, and have got a raft of other tins unopened for fear of making it worse :stuck_out_tongue: Not counting the stuff I’ve managed to get jarred up, I have about 10 Toques, 6 F&T’s, 6 GH’s and about 10 others all open already. I know I’m going to be a long while actually finishing them - or even half of them - but I have reasonable confidence in the tins to keep the contents fresh for at least 60-70% of the way through the tin. Would a Poschl really keep for occasional use over a 6 month period for example? If not, it would likely spoil waiting for me to get through it

@50ft_trad I understand your dilemma having been through it myself. 6 months is asking a lot from a tapbox, I have a 3/4 full tap box of Fichtennadel that is about 4 months old now…it’s drying out but the aroma is still fine. The German snuffs seem to be well oiled so they can put up with a bit more neglect provided they are kept out of the sun and not anywhere too warm. Samuel Gawith tapboxes on the other hand arrive through my letter box - ruined, at least in my experience.

Agreed on the SG/GH boxes. I expected a little better from the Poschl snuffs, but really enough to reach me intact. Maybe when my exploration of snuff is less frenzied, I’ll give these a whirl. There’s so much I want to spend time with beforehand though

I hate that old socks smell.

@ermtony reviewed it on his website and says it is menthol-schmalzler snuff. Actually i can not see a difference of the consistency of g.prise, löwenprise and gawith apricot but the scents. What do you think? Is it a type of schmalzler or not?

Gletscher Priese is one of the few menthol snuffs I keep around. it seems to have that “something” about it … maybe its me dreaming of the snow covered hills and pine trees when I take it! (I am not a menthol snuff fan as a rule as I like a bit more flavor in a snuff other that just menthol)
