I should start by saying that it’s not my intention to coopt @Sloth’s other thread, or to bash Pöschl in general (chacun à son goût). I started with Pöschl snuffs (gletcher prise, apricot and president) but I find anymore that they almost make me sick. i.e., they make my sinuses hurt and make me feel lethargic/fatigued or otherwise as if I’m beginning to come down with something. For instance, on Saturday I was using Ozona President for about half the day until I starting noticing the above symptoms. They subsided when I quit using it and after using the neti pot that evening, I woke up feeling fine. I also get a similar feeling after Gletscher Prise. Anyone else experienced this phenomenon? ( I sense I’ve read a similar story here somewhere). Could it be the paraffin? I’m about to swear off Pöschl if this is how it makes me feel!
I occasionally get bunged up with the strong menthol poschls but nothing untoward-I also get occasionally bunged up from other brands though less often than poschls. I get none of the stuffiness with their schmalzlers. Its quite possible you have developed an allergy of some sort to some ingredient they are using? I dont think paraffin could cause the symptoms you describe-unless vaseline makes you ill!
Maybe you have an allergy to one of the ingredients or something. I too started off with Poschls and menthols and I rarely use menthols anymore because they seem to have an adverse effect on my sinuses as well (unless used only lightly). If I used nothing but something like Poschl:President all day long, I’m sure I’d feel like I had some kind of head cold by the end of the day, but as for the lethargic feeling…hmmm…I dont know, man. I certainly wouldnt hold it against you for never using a Poschl product again if it makes you feel like that! Its a good thing there are so many different snuffs out there from which to choose!
Avoid swallowing it. It probably is the paraffin. I could never use a Pöschl all day long.
There’s still a few Poschls I haven’t tried but I’ve never noticed any ill effects. I’ve also been lucky at not experiencing much rebound congestion from menthol. Others have complained about reactions to some of the Poschl mentholated snuffs so I don’t doubt that you may be experiencing an allergic response. I have a deviated septum if that means anything and I also use the old snort and spit method if I feel congestion coming on. I agree with Xander’s suggestion about not swallowing it.
Poschl snuffs mess up my sinuses and make me feel as if I have a cold. Other menthol snuffs do not have this effect on me, but when I am sick Poschl snuffs make me feel better and I use them almost exclusively
i personally think paraffin isnt the issue, many things contain it and its hardly an unusual additive to foodstuffs. someone did post a list of their ingredients on here somewhere, there are far more interesting looking aditives in there other than paraffin.
yeap most chocolates that you buy in the US have paraffin in them, makes the chololate stick to what it’s coating better. edm
I’ve never had any issues with Poschl snuffs and I use a lot of them.
Poschl lists their ingredients online, you know. If there was something dastardly in them, they are liars, as the ingredients seemed benign. The ratio of said non-tobacco ingredients, which is not provided I believe, might be the cause. For instance, paraffin: a little might be okay, but if you poured a melted candle into your nose, that would be a bit different.
It sounds like the consensus is that I might be allergic to an ingredient or two. Thanks for the input and helpful advice, all!
Just an update. I’ve been using O&G off and on for the past few days, and none of the symptoms I noted above with the use of the Pöschl snuffs occurred. Must be the Pöschl.
I have felt that before too- though not with the Poschl. It’s almost a sluggish, almost nauseous feeling. It almost feels like eating too much chocolate (sounds weird) but I know what you’re describing… I still haven’t found out what causes this- but I can relate to the feeling. I’m glad you found the cause for yourself and I hope things are good now! I use Poschl when I’m congested (like once a month or so) and it works better than medicine for me!
This sounds slightly like a nicotine overdose. I’ve gotten sick before using too much Copenhagen on an empty stomach and it sounds just like what you described. Maybe drainage swallowing could account for some of it as well?
@Spyro: I don’t believe so. It doesn’t take too much Pöschl to experience the symptoms, maybe even only one or two pinches sometimes, and I don’t think these types are high in nicotine. Also, if it were nicotine, I would expect to experience it when I use HDT, other toasts, or Dholakia Black, yet I don’t. Yes, perhaps drainage is a better explanation, but I don’t think I was experiencing an higher-than-normal amount of drip if at all the last time this occurred. Also, it doesn’t seem to occur when I have unfortunate drip from other, finer snuffs, like the one I was experiencing from not respecting Dholakia earlier. Thank you for the suggestions however! Db
I, too, started on Pöschls, but nearly gave up snuff altogether because pinching President for a few hours makes my whole nose sore. Like I was punched in the nose… At first I gave up all menthols, and slowly tried more and more of them. Finally I decided that my problem wasn’t with the menthol, but some other ingredient in the Pöschl snuff. I’ve never had any similar reaction from English, Indian or any other menthols/mints. Pöschl is the largest share of the whole nasal snuff market. Many seem to tolerate it fine. But you’re not alone in finding issues, either. If that were all that was available, I wouldn’t use snuff at all. I still like the scent of President, but wouldn’t pinch it for a dollar, no offence to Pöschl intended.
It’s amazing the number of things that can disagree with a person. The body is pretty is a pretty amazing thing with an innumerable number of systems running at all times. It’s amazing that the works don’t get messed up over crazy little things more often.
