I’ve noticed if you go to your profile we still have points, but they don’t mean anything anymore. I’ve been inactive for awhile and I’ve noticed the site has got an update, or I should say a change. I really like the older version and I think most do and I feel it made people more active on here. It would be cool to inquire some of the older version. For example, different options other then just liking a comment/ and knowing who liked your comment, achievements/points for certain things just like the older version (years joined, amount of post/feedback, pictures etc.), a easier news feed like separating new posts from old archivable post with links instead of pages (yearly my suggestion). And the background I hate it, I miss the all black, too bright for my eyes. Anyways just my thoughts. Hope to hear some input or the reasoning. Cheers.
Good evening, @baconpete. I understand your feelings. I’ve been here since 2013, and it’s definitely been a ride. Some things didn’t transfer properly in the migration from .org-.net-.com, points being one of them. Mark had been working on getting the going again before he left, but a Vanilla version update related issue made it more complicated than it should have been, ESPECIALLY after the migration. I don’t remember ever having had the option to see who liked a post, but we’re also talking four and a half years ago now, so it may just be escaping me. As far as the way the page is organized, it defaults to a “latest” feed, and you can get to the page it used to default to by clicking “Categories” at the top of the page. Also at the top, you can click “Mark All Viewed” to refresh the order of the page you’re on. As it’s currently set, old posts only resurface when someone has recently commented on it, and that’s been the case since the beginning of Snuffhouse. We have conversations here that have been going on since for a decade now, with each new wave of users adding to the pool of knowledge while learning from members of the past. As far as the black background (dark theme), it was only like that for a month, maybe less. It was switched to this by vote (Mark had a live thread going) because A) It didn’t work right on some devices, and B) it was hard on a lot of people’s eyes. As far as pictures, the footprint was just getting too big. That’s why the original Snuffhouse had to move in the first place. We currently have 4,052 members, and that’s after I cleaned out close to a thousand delinquent accounts myself over the summer. Hope the at least provides some insight. If you’d like, I can dig up the old post from immediately after the switch over, when we discussed these things as a community.
Here’s the original thread I mentioned above: http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/comment/398661/#Comment\\_398661
@Hitsuzen Ah okay, thanks. Yeah probably not the best on a cellphone looking at a black screen. Its good to see there is lots of members still. Lots of what I missed of the older version, others probably could care less anyways. But yeah thanks letting me know and glad to be back.
I’ll check the thread
Oh yeah I don’t even think there was a like button before, I’ve just realized
@baconpete I think what’s probably nagging at you is the “feel” here changing so much. Some people moved on, some new people came in. It’s strange to leave and come back to a completely different crowd. You get used to the people you used to chat with and the way that crowd felt, then when you come back it all feels foreign. I really miss a lot of people from when I first joined, too. As a piece of encouragement I can tell you that this place, like any other, moves in waves. Whenever there is a huge influx of new members, there’s a “cold” period while everyone gets used to each other. Eventually, it starts to feel “warm” again. Then people move on, more people join up, the cycle starts again. Take heart!
@Hitsuzen Exactly, very well said. Thanks, will do
It would be nice to have a REPLY button , which functions as it does in other forums by having the post you are replying to quoted in the reply.
My point is I think new members aren’t fully aware the vast information available on the Snuffhouse search bar that would answer almost all questions that they have vs. starting new threads. The bar needs to be better advertised and be relocated on the front page IMO.
@nicmizer: I see a Search Snuffhouse but there are no search options. I can’t even seaerch to find the post I made yeserday to see if someone replied. I had to manualy enter @nicmizer at the beginning of this post…there is no user information. This is more of a bulletine board than a forum…nothing like the old forum.
@Z_2K If you need to find your own posts, check under your profile (your discussions and comments are listed for you chronologically). As I stated above, Snuffhouse now defaults to Recent Discussions- the bulletin board you’re seeing. If up top, you select “Categories”, it’ll take you to the page SH used to default to. If you’re on mobile, go to the bottom of the page after going to “categories” and select “view full site” for the “authentic”, original SH experience. The changes made were made by popular consent after the switch over. The new mobile scheme caters to those who’s devices don’t support the desktop version. I remember that having been a common complaint at the time, but the grass is always greener, no? The current version looks and functions very differently than the version we were on when you or I joined, yes. You have to remember, though, that we almost lost ALL of it. This site has a MASSIVE footprint, and is updating every day. We have just over 4,000 registered users. Less than 20% of them are what I would consider “active”. The rest, we keep on file so the conversations had and the information gathered is archived for future enthusiasts to gleam. This is the Snuffhouse mission, the long term compiling of information and experience. If you look back through your own discussions to your earliest ones, back in 2010, they’re all still there, preserved forever more. Same with mine, and many, many others. And we almost lost it. After several failed attempts to raise the money for another year through the members, SH went down over night. A very small group of unpaid volunteers rescued the data, migrated us temporarily to an ACTUAL bulletin board system (the .net days), and eventually restored better than 90% of the original skeleton here at the dot com address. Ways needed to be paved to reduce our footprint, ways needed to be made to raise funds to cover the cost of the space we take up and the amount of traffic we generate (almost 20:1 lurkers to registered members, at any given time), and post migration, through a series of group discussions, even managed to make the interface more universally functional. Did we lose some things? Absolutely. Does this feel different than the pre-migration days? Quite a bit. Having been present and active for the entire experience, though, I think those involved did an incredible job of preserving our precious resource, especially remembering the panic we all felt when, for a short while, we thought it was gone forever. Most of the things being mentioned on this thread can be customized on your end, which was kind of the point. What you’re looking at now is the Snuffhouse we built as a community, by popular opinion and weighted feedback. It’s not completely alien to the pre migration days, either. Again, if you go to the “Categories” tab (and, if on a phone or tablet, select “Full Site” at the very bottom of the page), you’re basically at the old Snuffhouse. Just like before, if you go to your user profile, your own comments and discussions are still archived chronologically. I’m not sure what problems you’re having with the Search bar, and I’d like to talk more about that if you feel it could stand improvement. If I start typing “Old Mill”, I have a huge list of options before I finish the word “old”. @nicmizer That probably wouldn’t be a bad idea, though we’d have to adjust the whole bar structure, which may cause more confusion than it would solve. I’ve thought about pinning a thread too, particularly for older members returning to the new Snuffhouse, explaining where some of these functions are. I feel like we actually have a more efficient interface now than we used to, but not everyone may know how to use it to it’s full potential.
^ That idea should simplify things without moding the hole bar. New thread with more member input about the power of the search bar should inform most all new and old in a very short time of the vast information available from the history to daily present. Pin thread at top.
I think the main thing this site needs, is the ability to use additional characters so that posts stop getting cut off. I think that is the biggest frustration with this site, and could be a significant part of why people aren’t participating more.
I too preferred the older Black site, it seemed easier on the eyes to me, and for me this one doesnt like apostrophes if I put one in in the text box, it cuts off my post at that point.
@LadySnuff It’s not just apostrophes, but pound signs, umlauts, and other stuff too. It’s a PITA that trips a lot of people up. @Roderick falls for it all the time :)) I have noticed a lot of people give up on it, rather than try to simplify their text (or have not noticed, or understood why). It’s a recurring problem for a lot of newcomers. Personally, I actually prefer the cleaner look on this new site. The older black site didn’t look as welcoming IMHO.
