My name is Malcolm. I live in Cessnock NSW Australia and like the nick - Mal from Cessnock. I’ve been smoking for 40yrs and am 55yrs old. I want to quit and since I like tobacco so much want to replace it with Snuff. I have stocked up and partaken of the pleasure but find I get a blocked nose - maybe this comes with the pleasure? I am honoured to be one of the Snuff Sniffers Society.

S

Without wanting to sound ridiculous, you look like a very jolly chap! I can’t comment on the blocked nose, because it’s not a problem that I have. Welcome to the club!

B

Could be the snuff your technique or simply that it takes the nose a while to get used to snuffing. For me some snuffs block me others don’t. At this point though even the snuffs that block me don’t block me as bad as they used to. Not sure if that is because I"ve gotten better at snuffing or if my nose has gotten more used to snuffing. Either way with time it seems to be easier to deal with snuff.

Malcolm Welcome aboard. Spend some time using the search facility and reading back posts. Most questions from new snuffers come up time and again and I’m sure you would find that useful. Snuff can cause congestion but often switching brands will help, or eliminate the problem. If you are using lots of menthols or very flavoured snuffs that may be the reason. Try some plain, drier snuff and see how that goes.

Welcome Mal from Hull. UK. We have another Australian member, but he’s not been on-board since last March.

Neti pot, man. it’s a Godsend. I also find that coating the nose works better that sucking it in for me. I have the congestion issue too…some are much worse than others. Very sensitive schnoz I guess. You will find many here that will guide your way. Welcome to snuff.

D

Neti pot, hanky and a little finger keep mine in working order, guilty pleasures if you will.

Malcom, I really like your name (I have always really liked the name Malcom, I love the way people from Australia sound when they talk, and I also like your big smile. So, Greetings from somewhere interesting (but due to a certain problem with where I live and ordering tobacco online maybe I shouldn’t really say it anymore so 'faerieland justleft of Oz" will have to do instead) a real place none the less, you could say its in the USA and ‘just south of Canada’

I used to get hooked on nasal spray or vick’s vapo rub as a kid. I think the same principle applies; it’s called “rebound”. Your nose produces mucous to protect itself, so if you put in a mentholated snuff it will clear it out temporarily but your nose will start making more mucous to protect itself from the menthol. I still use mentholated snuffs sometimes, especially before bed, but you might want to avoid them (esp. the stronger ones) if you have a sensitive nose.

M

awesome stache, by the way.

S

Welcome Mal. Snuff is a wonderful way to quit smoking, my girlfriend and I both used snuff to quit, and its much more enjoyable with so many different flavors you can spend years just trying all of them. Anyways, good luck.

Welcome Mal.

looks like you got some hair blocking your nose there and those pinchers on your nose can’t be helping either. Good of you to join us! You won’t be disappointed in this world of delicious tobacco offerings.

A couple of thing about stuffiness you should know; the first is regarding mentholated snuffs, there is plenty to read here about how the sinuses swell a little after snuffing these causing stuffiness. Secondly is the cilia or hair in your lungs, throat, and sinuses has been damaged by smoking, these hairs facilitate the movement of nasal snuff in the proper direction (a darned good reason to stop smoking right there). Other things to consider is allergies and diet, Some scents can cause a reaction although this should be easy to detect as itchy eyes are a simple indicator. As for your diet, milk products, beans, even beer can make sinuses more stuffy than usual. Now that you are snuffing you are certain to become more aware of these things. Food allergies can also be a culprit. The good news is that using nasal snuff can actually help all of these things in the long run so keep at it now that you got the motors running the fine tuning will be easy. Cheers!

Welcome. And friggin’ awesome mustache.

Hello Malcolm - welcome to the forum.

S

Welcome from Michigan, United States! And yes–great whiskers. As others have said, you might just need to adjust your technique or eliminate some types of snuff which may be causing the problem; good luck.

Well, what a friendly bunch of blokes you are. A big thank you to everyone for your welcomes. I have read all your comments and have seen some advice regarding my blocked nose issue._ wickedkitchen _ suggested “I also find that coating the nose works better that sucking it in for me” Can you explain wickedkitchen? Do you shove a little in there with a finger perhaps? I’ll try anything, once, twice - what the hell - I’ll try anything a dozen times. dredbull wrote : Neti pot, hanky and a little finger keep mine in working order, guilty pleasures if you will. I admit to the little finger - but what’s with the pot? Does it help too? lol

S

A netipot is good for cleaning out the sinuses. I personally don’t use one, I use a saline nasal spray, but either one is good for a good cleaning. Check out here for a neti pot demonstration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sDIbRAXlg and its not nearly as uncomfortable as it looks

K

Welcome, Malcolm. You’ll forget all about smoking soon enough. It’s nice to have you here.

I’ve been really hitting the menthols hard tonite: WoS Menthol Plus, SM500, SMBlue, McC JIP, Supermint and O&G and my nose feels better than ever. I cut down from 1 1/2 packs of Kools or Newports per day for 37 years, to the odd cigarette or two in the evening. Earlier this evening, I was drinking whisky and using mainly American Scotches and some Toque Honey and Whiskey and found myself rather clogged. For me, the menthols do not give me a rebound effect, but then my nose is accustomed to daily Afrin, so I’m not normal in that regard. Snuff is a lot more fun than smoking; just be careful with Australian Customs. I hear they can be pretty tough. I highly recommend a neti pot; one of the best investments I ever made. Thank you for referring to us as “illustrious.”

M

LHB, is snuff illegal in Australia? You mentioned in your post to careful of Australian Customs. Funny you say that - with my third order from Toque, my parcel had been opened with a note inserted by Aus Customs telling me they had checked it out - they should have fessed up to opening a can of Quit and spilling it all over the place. grrrr Have you had an experience with Aus Customs too? I mixed my first cocktail tonight. I had some Absinthe which I very strong so I mixed it 50:50 with some original to tone it down a tad. It’s much better now BTW I’m on the look out locally for a nose flusher thingy - lol All the best, happy snuffing Cheers, Mal from Cessnock AU

M

Mal: Occasionally the Toque tins will come unscrewed a bit and leak, but its okay to blame it on customs.

X

I think its only illegal to sell it in Australia. Importing for personal use is legitamate. Roderick probably knows your tax and customs rules as he has other customers there.
