I was thinking of possibly picking up some plastic snuff boxes but I was wondering which is better Mrsnuff or snuff house box. I will not be pinching only using as a tap box and also wondering how many grams do these boxes hold. What’s your opinion of these
I have quite a few of the black, round ‘smashbox’ containers I find nice when your working and don’t want to mess up a nice snuffbox. They used to be around 50 pfennig a-piece or so.
@Bacchus68 I have both of those and they are equally well made. I have used the Mr.Snuff one for both pinching and tapping and have had no problems. I have only used the Snuffhouse one for pinching but I have just checked the slide mechanism for tapping and it appears to be fine. The Mr.Snuff box is wider and shallower than the Snuffhouse box and resembles a shrunken business card holder. I prefer the Snuffhouse box for reasons of personal taste and also because - as the snuff depletes during the day - there is less surface area of the snuff in contact with the air. Depending on how quickly you go through the snuff that may be completely irrelevant. As for how much they hold I have not actually measured that. I simply spoon in what I want from the storage container. I am sure there are others here who can help you with that info. I hope that helps.
I have one of the MrSnuff boxes and it has been a daily companion for most of a year. It’s quite tough and has handled much more abuse than I would have initially thought. Well worth the price. The Snuffhouse boxes are the same just a different size, I haven’t got one yet, but will be getting 2 on my next order. My only complaint is moist snuff tends to get wedged in the hinge area and makes it hard to close, sometimes. Not awful, just annoying. My box will hold 5-6 grams comfortably. More if I pack it some.
I have all 10 of them ,I fill them with a couple days worth, when they empty I put some other snuff in them. I like the snuffhouse.org boxes, I carry them on my belt with zippo lighter holster. to keep track of what is in them I tape a hand written label to the lid. I mostly use these with the side slide tap out. And if they get lost no big deal unlike sterling silver boxes that cost several hundreds or some other prized antique box you would go frantic if lost or damaged .
I’ve got four of the Snuffhouse boxes and they have been very good so far. Both the side slider for tapping and the lid for pinching have nice tight seals and happily stay shut for a whole day’s jangling around in a trouser pocket. Like @bigmick said about the Mr Snuff boxes, they can get snuff caught behind the hinges meaning the lid doesn’t quite shut flush. A quick tap on the hinge side usually dislodges it all, and to prevent it I tilt the box towards me before opening (although if you’re just tapping this shouldn’t effect you much). The plastic is quite thick and rigid, they don’t bend when you apply pressure so I think they’ll prove to be quite long lasting
I just got these from the “Dollar Tree” 10-2 ounce little tubs that seal tight for $1.00 Perfect for pinching with my fat fingers
I thought that I would add a link from “Dollar Tree” http://www.dollartree.com/Sure-Fresh-Mini-Storage-Containers-10-ct-Packs/p304193/index.pro If you have one near you, you can order them from the web and pick them up at the store without paying shipping “Pretty Cool”
These were obtained at Walmart in travel section the bins near toothpaste… 2 for 97 cents in a pack … Screw top … Air tight and smooth on the inside with no crevasses … Seals up just right for snuff… Think designed for women’s cosmetics… They are called IGO TRAVEL JARS … Saw em in seven colors…
The mrsnuff plastif snuff boxes are great. I have more waiting to get ordered and some snuffhouse boxes as well. As I posted the other day I lost another one which is upsetting but ok cuz they are inexpensive in comparison to other snuff boxes. Definitely order some!
mr.snuff box is great. Ideal size for me. I also like snuffhouse box too but mrsnuff box is ahead. These boxes re exactly what i need. I will add to my shopping cart more for my next order.
I ordered the snuff house boxes. They are really good. I don’t pinch but I do open them and spoon out the contents so I can get a good amount. Very sturdy and great size for traveling with. I am really enjoying them
I’ve had a Mr Snuff plastic box for a while, I just got a Snuffhouse box I like the smaller size but the quality’s not as good as the Mr Snuff box, Sharp parting edges and visible sprue from the molding, a sharp protruding hinge pin. Fit seems pretty good on the lid, I’m sure it will work fine. I’m probably a little over critical being in that field.
I just got my Snuffhouse box today. It’s a wonderful little tool. The lit is somewhat difficult to open but it is brand new, I’m sure use and time will cure that. It fits a very good amount of snuff. It’s much safer than buying a $100 antique one and losing it. For snuffers on the cheap, it’s a good choice.
In ten month I had worn out 2 snuffhouse boxes, The slide door only takes a couple thousand openings. I believe I got my moneys worth; Just order 4 more. Still waiting on the chrome plated ones.

Really!? That isn’t something that I would have expected. I didn’t expect an heirloom piece but not an average 5 month lifespan. You did get you’re money’s worth, though. They are at a very reasonable price.
I’ve also had the slide piece fail on two of those plastic boxes. A shame as I tend to use them for tapping out of rather than pinching (in my work environment I really want to be putting fingers in my snuff!). The wider, flatter Rococo boxes seem to stand up to the hammering rather better.
@ermtony i took of the sliding piece and fix the pin. I think you try this because all 3 boxes i have, had loose pins under the sliding pieces.
@linguist On mine it looked like a piece of the plastic had actually snapped off. I guess that part was just a bit thinner than on the Rococo boxes. I couldn’t find the tiny pieces that had come adrift so all those two boxes are good for now is glueing the slide on permanently and using them for pinching from. No a major problem.
I just glued the side on and I’m much happier. It was leaky and loose and I’m more of a pincher/shoveller, anyway.
I put snus portions in one of my broken snuff house box. it beats carting the big round can around. I guess I could carry 1/2 can of dip in the other broken box . Just another use for the plastic box. @The_Persian_Slipper I got ten months use out of them I guess if I only had one it get twice the abuse. but if I was more careful it may had lasted longer also. I am hard on most things I use. Yes, I definitely got my moneys worth. I still have 3 that are working fine and still tight enough to keep a weeks of snuff fresh. I just got 2 more and have another two in my cart. Who know when @MrSnuff will have more made. I like to see chrome, smoked chrome, glow in the dark,Fluorescence colors, camouflage and tie dye and of course one with my avatar on the lid
Not being able to see and hold snuffboxes I’ve never bought one online. However, over the years I’ve been gifted a fair few. These gifts range from exquisitely made wooden ones with sliding lids (mostly far too small) to round cheap metal ashtrays masquerading as snuffboxes and varied trinket or pillboxes. Though useful none of them have actually been used for snuff. Last month I chanced four quid on a cheap plastic (plastic!) effort, clearly purpose built from the Preston shop. This box has doubtless been described elsewhere, but this is my verdict. It’s black, hinged, has a certain cheap bakelite feel, doesn’t leak and is a decent size for once, probably holding 15+ grams. The only box comparable in size in my possession is a large polished ebony metal-ended tabatiere bought in Paris some thirty-five years ago at considerable expense, and a similar cheaper one in rosewood. This, however, holds even more supply. So, for a heavy user of coarse snuff like myself it’s ideal, holding two full day’s worth. Moreover it has the all-important flat ends, allowing loose snuff to compact and remain fresh by being tapped & placed upright when not in the pocket or being used. The area exposed to air is then less then that of a tin - tall F&T tins included. One end has a slider that I could do without. Especially recommended to the heavy user of gros snuff who prefers to grasp as much tobacco as possible and any who fret about the 'elf & safety of beloved boxes costing real money. (I damaged my large rosewood snuffbox in Marrakesh January last. Pulling my handkerchief from a pocket while descending a steep minaret the box came with it, bounced down several steps and cracked. Wouldn’t have sworn so much had it been cheap plastic.)
I recommend the Tripletech wooden snuffboxes by Patrick Collins. A Google search will bring up results. Worth every penny as you can pinch, tap, or pull out the hand-carved bone snuff-spoon that rests in its own compartment. I have four years of use into mine and it is as tight as the day I bought it.
I would like to see some of these plastic snuff boxes available from Snuffstore - please.
i cant see any from snuffstore, they only seem to sell metal types. the rococo/mrsnuff plastic box in yellow from mrsnuff.com is all i have, but here- http://www.flickr.com/photos/41751408@N06/sets/72157633714139879/ i used a lighter of pretty standard size for comparison. lighter colours like yellow seem to show up stray snuff and muck more though.
Here are some plastic boxes and other popular boxes for comparison row 1. red, orange,snuffhouse.org box, black Mr.Snuff/rococo row 2 blue, brown ,green, Snuffhouse.org Row 3. green, blue, Mr.snuff/Rococo box Row 4. @Firestarter0 I meant I’d like Snuffstore to sell plastic boxes like the ones available from Mr Snuff.
well bugger, its done now haha. in that case, me too. would eliminate my need to screw around with dollars.
I’ll see what I can do.
Thanks.
@MrSnuff Is there an ETA of when you’ll be getting the “On Order” colors for the Snuffhouse and MisterSnuff plastic boxs, Brown and Black.
I just received two of the snuffhouse.org plastic snuff boxes from Mister Snuff. Absolutely excellent boxes. I suppose you could say that plastic is tacky compared to, say, 925 silver. But there’s an aesthetic to functionality, and these are really well designed. I’ll add my voice to all those recommending them. Shame they are sold out of the nicer colours (blue, black and brown). Still, I got orange and red, which are pretty good. I just draw the line at the revolting lime green Mister Snuff box. I’d rather just use the tin in that case. Sorry, just my personal taste.
Thanks for the reply @MrSnuff
I took a lime green and painted it silver and put clear coat over that. Just to see how it will work. I plan on painting the inside gold and clear coating that.
I didn’t realise I was not alone in having the slide panel on my Snuffhouse snuff-boxes break. I bought four (to avoid cross-contamination of different snuffs), and on two of them a little plastic “stopper” on the inside of the slide panel has broken, meaning it can come straight off the side of the box. I thought it was just me being heavy-handed. I know that they’re relatively cheap, and admittedly still usable, and luckily for me the two that have broken aren’t ones I generally take out with me, but I was a bit disappointed that after three months I’ve got a fifty-percent breakdown rate. Still prefer them to smash-tubs though.
I bought about 50 of these from snuffgear.com when a newbie, but in black, and they are superb. They keep snuff fresh for days. I also bought the ones from mrsnuff, but found them too fiddly and harder to open leading to frequent spillage so I stick to the snuffgear ones. Now that I’m down to only using a couple of snuffs a day, a couple of fancy snuff boxes are on the shopping list. http://snuffgear.com/index.php?main\\_page=popup\\_image&pID=13 http://snuffgear.com/index.php?main\\_page=product\\_info&cPath=14&products\\_id=13
I have found that the mini snus containers make a decent snuff box for out and about. The Goteborgs one I just found from last summer had Tom Buck inside and the snuff was just fine.
