In my short time trying snuff other than American Scotches, I find that I like the pure tobacco flavor more than purfumed and other flavored snuffs (though citrus is quite nice!). Plain snuff is not readily labled as such and I would like to try more. I have tried Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown and Bernard Gekachelter Virginie and both are excellent. I have the following slated to try in the future: De Kralingse- Hollandse Bolongaro Latakia AO 1860 Samuel Gawith- Black Rappee Kendal Brown Plain London Brown Scotch Black And the entire toast Bundle from Mr. Snuff. I am asking for suggestions for other pure tobacco scented snuffs that I have missed. Any help is much appreciated.

T

Samuel Gawith Blue Crest

T

Actually, you should probably try the Red Crest and Yellow Crest as well

P

I’ll add them to the list. Thank you.

T

The new Silver Dollar (English snuff marketed to America) Snuff “Natural Snuff” is VERY good. If you like plain tobacco. It’s got great flavor and some moisture to it. I recommend it for you.

B

Dholakia White is a good plain snuff

P

@transistor - I hope Mr.Snuff starts carrying it soon… we don’t have decent tobacco shops in this area Hopefully I’ll get lucky when I hit Foodlion this weekend. @Brandasaur - I’ll add it to my list… the reviews make it sound like it will be quite an adventure. Thank you both!

U

Toque Natuarl and Quit certainly.

K

Sternecker Staubinger is a good plain snuff, as are NTSU, Taxi and Babaton. I know you are not so keen on perfumed snuffs but looking at your list, I wonder if you might like the herbal tones of GH Sea Breezes and Molens Mettaijer. GH also list a snuff called Plain, which I have never tried.

P

Thank you Uwe, Khalid… I honestly don’t know how I left Toque Natural and Quit off the list (oversight I guess). I’ll add these suggestions to my list. @Khalid - Is the Staubinger gritty like Barnard’s Offenbacher Cardinal? I just don’t know if my bush-league nose could handle it. The herbal snuffs are eye catching and I will be trying them eventually. The WoS Thyme and Lemon, GH cinnamon, and McChrystals Clove and McC Hops (as well as the ones you mentioned) are all on my radar.

There’s a ton more but some others are: Irish Toasts - made by most companies and various different brands; toast is a very light, fine toasted plain snuff SP’s - plain with hints of bergamot and citrus: Toque Original, Wilsons Best SP, Wilsons Tom Buck, JandH Wilsons SP No 1 - SP does have a flavour but in the background usually and not dominating the tobacco Dholakia White and Black Look on the company websites; they are all described.

X

@Khalid: GH’s Plain is the same as their KB (Plain) sometimes it just has a different label.

P

@Snuffster - I’ll have to do that I guess… I’ve been trying to go through Mr. Snuff’s website reviews and it got really cumbersome quickly. Thank you for the suggestions. I guess my next 12-15 orders are already decided… the wife would KILL me if ordered it all at once

Bernard’s Alt Offenbacher Köstlich is a good blended snuff. Pariser No. 2 , Feinster Kownoer and Civette are/were good and might still be available. Amostrinha was a fine plain snuff which for some reason is now mentholated. To the best of my knowledge these are no longer available in foil packets or bottles, only tap-boxes. I understand, however, that they keep better in tap-boxes than water based English examples. To the Samuel Gawith list you can add McCombie and, as already mentioned by Snuffster, Irish ‘D’ Light. I wouldn’t buy any English snuff in the tap-box (especially the coarse moist snuffs) as the boxes are not airtight and the contents will be ruined by staleness and dehydration. Bulk buys are always good, but not viable when you need a sample. Fortunately My Smoking Shop supplies London Brown, Black Rappee, Scotch Black in vacuum-sealed 25gram tins. In theory all Sam Gawith snuffs are available in these tins, but due to an impasse described elsewhere they don’t seem to make it to retailers. Ludicrous! Top Mill and S.P No.1 by J&H Wilsons are the plainest medium snuffs. Other S.Ps are characterised by the addition (in combination and amount) of bergamot, lavender and rose. None of these snuffs, however, mar the tobacco taste with pungent perfume.

K

@Xander O.K I will scrub that off my must try list. @Pennanngalan I don’t find the Straubinger to be gritty, never tried the cardinal though.

N

Every time this comes up, I have to put my two cents in for Toque Natural Toast. I like it a lot more than Toque Natural. F&T HDT is also very, very good.

X

@PhilipS: Bernard Pariser No. 2 is still sold in glass bottles. Civette Extrafein was until last year. Some retailers may still have some. Also: Mr Snuff has procured a good selection of Samuel Gawith in vacuum tins.

M

Dholakia Sparrow Green. That’s pretty good too.

T

Snuffreviews.com Go there- that website is AWESOME for discovering new snuffs. Priceless really… I also highly recommend HDT from F&T! It’s almost as good as it gets for plain snuffs!

J

I second Dholakia Sparrow and that T.A.S. Ratham too. They’re plain Indian snuffs, but they’re prepared with ghee, so they taste different than other plain snuffs.

B

Sparrow always has a slight hint of sandalwood. Almost like it was grown near sandalwood or shiped close to sandalwood. It’s not strong but it’s just noticable. In fact all the wonderfull Dholakia snuffs have this slightest hint of sandalwood.

J

Well I’ve had any sandalwood snuff, I agree that Dholakia Sparrow has a slight hint of something. When I first tried it from my second snuff order, I was amazed that it was just plain tobacco.

P

I appreciate the assistance everyone! Looks like I have a long journey ahead to find my favored plain snuff… thankfully, there appears to be a good variety available. Well, I’m off to check out Snuffreviews…

P

I suspect Sparrow Green has a bit of (unsweetened) cocoa in it. I’ve never detected any sandalwood in mine. @jazzi_mike : do you have a source for your information on the use of ghee in Sparrow? I know TAS uses ghee, but I didn’t really think that Sparrow did. The Dholakia ‘limited’ snuffs that were sold through Nicotine Rush were similar in grind to Sparrow, but were notably more oily than Sparrow, and based on that I had convinced myself that Sparrow is water based. My current favorite plain tobacco snuff is SG KB Plain.

D

WoS Toast No. 21 is a really nice plain snuff.

M

Sparrow just has “essence of India” in it. Like what bob said, grown near sandalwood, then ground in some building with sticks of incense burning away…good stuff…

B

Fribourg and Treyer High Dry Toast is an awesome plain snuff! If I had to pick one unscented snuff F&T HDT would be it.

P

"Also: Mr Snuff has procured a good selection of Samuel Gawith in vacuum tins. " Welly, welly, well - so he has. Retailers are generally too cautious to stock tins of Sam Gawith as the company will only supply tins in packs of sixteen. Good luck to Mr. Snuff.

B

excately matsnuffs just essence just a hint. Kind of thing once you notice it you notice it from then on untill then it’s like it’s not there.

J

Puffpuff: I thought they were both made with ghee. Haha. I could be wrong. I thought I read that it was made with ghee somewhere. Maybe on snuffreviews.com.

P

F&T High Dry Toast --totally in love with it since the first pinch. it has a great plain tobacco taste imho

I wonder who choose plain snuffs mostly over scented snuffs like OP. The tobacco smell itself is wonderful. I like scented snuffs but my hand goes to plain snuffs more than scented ones.

I used to be a menthol/scented snuff fanatic when I was much younger (I’m 53 now). Over the last ten years or so, my tastes have changed dramatically. Now I prefer Plain Scotches, Toasts and unscented or lightly scented snuffs. I still like menthols and scented snuffs two or three times a day, but unscented/lightly scented snuffs have become my all day, every day snuffs. My son is still a menthol snuff fanatic at age 27, and he won’t touch non-menthol snuffs.
