Plain tobacco snuff

I still haven’t tried Indian Madras snuffs. Why, I don’t know.

@Conk It’s been a while since the last time Dholakia Madras Toast was on stock at Snuffstore/Mr. Snuff.

For the meantime it can be purchased directly from Dholakia (http://www.dholakiaherbal.com).

The only vendor who ships other Madras snuffs worldwide is the USA-based hookah1 online store (http://hookah1.com/HOOOKAH2/index.php?route=product/category&path=6\_21). You have to purchase a box (say, 12 X 50g), shipping to Europe is USD 82.25, a little bit of a deal breaker here, though per gram it’s still cheaper than some popular British snuffs.

Let’s hope the promissed new 6 Photo MG Madras snuff will reach Snuffstore this year…

I have too many plain tobacco snuffs to choose just one. I am leaning toward 6 Photo LA Natural, Viking Brown, F&T HDT, but my taste varies according to the time of day, season of the year, and of course, my mood at the moment.

Another plain one - FUBAR Snafu Plain. Just like 6 Photo Natural, it’s fine and oiled (hence could be mistaken as ‘moist’ or ‘semimoist’) plain, fairly strong snuff.

And if white snuffs, American dry scotches, toasts, roasts and greased/oiled/buttered Madras-type snuffs fall under the plain snuff category, let’s add two more FUBARs on the list: Toasted and Grunt.

On a side note, I would evaluate Grunt as fairly low on nicotine. (In)famous ashtray reek was still present in the last batch, but potency was rather disappointing. FUBAR Toasted is at least as strong as Dholakia Sparrow, only deeper roasted and oiled.

My experience is only limited to Indian snuffs. The scents closest to smoking cigars or a pipe are the Madras types. Pure tobacco bliss. Please try any of the Madras ranges accessible in your area. The dark ones may be ghee roasted and will have a buttery, nutty taste, but the lighter ones are processed differently. Do not know how, but they are pure tobacco bliss. Has a good burn with intense tobacco flavour and nic. Will stir up your sinuses. So good after a hot, spicy meal on a cold day. Do try them (if you have not already).

I haven’t tried it yet, but Dholakia Smoker’s Blend is a plain snuff, too. Now available at snuffstore.co.uk.

Six Photo MG Madras is finally there as well!

If American Scotches are included, Swisher Starr is a good one.  Leathery, with only a slight burn, it lacks the smokiness of other scotches.  Just good old plain tobacco goodness.

@Thepeug if it’s tobacco scented and you can snuff it up your nose for nicotine/tobacco enjoyment then that would fit the definition of a plain snuff if you ask me.

@bob that’s a great question. For me personally toasts, scotches, and pretty much anything scented with contents other than blending tobaccos, salt+soda, and the vessel it’s aged in I don’t think of as plain. To me this thread is going off the rails  but we all have our outlooks. My nose likes Plains including but not limited to: SWS Golden Horn, WoS Natural and Toque Quit. Would love to try some more. Also there are the Dark Plains. Viking Dark is a powerful treat

WoS lists Plain as a separate type of snuff from Toast & Scotch in this article  https://sharrowmills.com/pages/beginners-guide-to-snuff For people like me that are sensitive to many toasts, and who also love “Plain” snuffs, it may just be nice to note if they are smokey. Of course my perspective is self-centered but for the purpose of helping others I have to think there are other future snuffers who might read this thread and appreciate this distinction

My head agrees with you @ar47 but my nose thinks otherwize . It would argue that toasts like WoS Irish 22 or 41 Photo Yellow Lily Natural exemplify facets of the absolute essence of plain tobacco flavours .

It d go further and allow the full range of cures and soaks, cooks and fermentations too :D…even a hint of scenting if it elevates the tobacco flavour .Rosnski Tabacum and Sixphoto LA natural aren’t by rights , ‘plain’ snuffs, but my nose finds them more ‘natural’  and evocative of good tobacco than something like an SG kendal brown . It’s just wired to smell that way .

I go through phases of craving plain snuffs . I ve been on a bit of a natural snuff trip since last september . My staples recently are…

WoS Natural , love this stuff, think it’s highly underrated , must have chuffed a pound of it since christmas .

Viking Blonde … I get through quite a bit of this , but it seems to change slightly between batches . I had loads of one that was all buttery and quite delightful, : now I ve got a few tins that are just okay .

The other plains(ish) I really rate

Toque Natural

Toque Quit

Wos Irish 22

41Photo Yellow Lilly Natural

Thors Hammer

For some reason I only ever fancy a gram or so of these ones now’n’again .

Notable mentions for

Rosinski Tabacum

Taxi Red

Six photo LA Natural . I used pounds of this last year …mostly in a plain blend but I’m not feeling it at the moment  . I love the tobacco flour though . If Vikas @sixphoto made it totally unscented with a larger grind , I d be in snuff heaven  .

Sixphoto MG Madras . early days but this might end up a staple for me.

@ar47, I could reiterate the same regarding English and German black (dark) snuffs. Say, SG KBs or Bernard’s GV… Some people name them “plain”, but those snuffs are smokey, too. As far as I understand, black snuff generally isn’t toasted, but it inherits that smokey character from fire-cured leaf.

However, as Mr. Rosinski explains, black snuff could be roasted, as well: "Black snuff is made from fermented tobacco, but is then additionally treated in processes such as smoke curing or roasting. Black snuff is distinguished by profound aromas which underline and intensify the tobacco flavour. “Black”, however, refers to the processing technique, it may equally be fairly light in colour. Can anybody say if Irish No 22 is truly plain? I got some in a trade and it has a fruity scent. It may have been cross-scented with other snuffs in the envelope.

Yep, @SammyD13, it’s truly plain (unscented) toast.

@bolbam420 There are two plain RZD snuffs - Jai Hanuman (tapkir) and Jawan:

http://www.rzdholakia.com/product.php#

Not a single word about the grind in the description there, but I would guess both are fine (recall someone mentioning another RZD snuff - Swastik Chhap very similar to Dholakia Sparrow Cool, which is really fine and dusty).

Haven’t tried Natural or Scented, but my old tin of 41 Photo Yellow Lilly Mint snuff had weird scent, too. Didn’t enjoy it.

@volunge I have tried contacting these guys on mail last year, got no response. Will try again sometime next month. So many fans of White Elephant here but hardly any reviews on 41 Photo’s Yellow Lily range. I have some Umbrella Madras snuff coming in. Will share updates.

I didn’t expect much from Yellow Lilly Mint, but I was totally disappointed and lost the slightest interest in trying the plain and scented versions. I gave away my both tins of Mint after a couple of pinches. I bet the same low-nicotine tobacco stalk base is used for all three snuffs.

The White Elephant is entirely different animal. Could well be a benchmark of quality for all white snuffs.

The Yellow Lily Mint base looks pretty similar to the Natural but the mint feels less substantial in the nose to me . It might well be the same base oiled up though . It probably is . I think they pack the three ‘flavours’ as mixed multipacks for wholesale .

A lot of early users on here noted an absence of nicotine in the Yellow Lily Natural . I found the batch I m using as a bit pokier than that . It may lack staying power but it has a nice little shortterm rush to it . I find the scent on the Natural pretty interesting …but I only ever want an odd bump when I’m in the mood for something light …kinda the same way I am with British made toasts . I admire them …from a distance :D.
