I got my hands on some OM PVT and Perfecto. Those are my first tobacco only snuffs. Are other plain snuffs similar to any of those? Or is it because chef Daniel just made some really good snuff? Any other good plain tobacco snuff recommendations?

J

So many! Havana Toast, HDT, Dholakia White, Viking Dark would make a good little sampler.

N

Bernard Virginie

Toque Quit

SG Kendal Brown Plain/Viking Brown

P

@JakartaBoy I’ve had my eye on dholakia white and HDT. Thanks both for recommendations.

S

I’ll add two:
Toque Natural Toast.  I love it!  So buttery and yummy.
SWS Lundy Foot, if you’re feelin’ fancy.

@n9inchnails Is Toque Quit seriously plain tobacco?!  I almost can’t believe it. My Quit smells like sarsaparilla or molasses to a level that makes me sure it’s scented.

M

I’m a huge fan of Sam Gawith Black Rappee.

Just tobacco and salt.

N

Quit is definately plain tobacco, your tin might have been contaminated by a nearby snuff or it could just be too fresh and the ammonia is messing with your nose.

I

I second the Toque Natural Toast, my favorite except for that heavenly PVT!

B

London Brown Plain coarse moist.

C

I’ll second the Viking’s already listed and also add Thor’s Hammer … really nice stuff.

Those are all fairly moist and easy to take.  For something dry and fine, the HDT is delicious.  Also, for a more musty / savory scent Old Paris is really nice.

Desert Campfire is pure tobacco also, btw … Dark Fired and Dark Air Cured leaf.  I’m working on a pure Burley blend right now as well that I hope to be ready for Thanksgiving.

P

Thanks for the info. @cobguy, I forgot about yours. I figured it was plain tobacco. I was thinking of plain tobacco that wasn’t a scotch or scotch inspired in the case of desert campfire. Let me know, I’m interested in some more of your blends.

A

I just got some Viking Brown in the last order opened it a couple of days ago and been growing on me ever since

J

@moemojo I agree about the Black Rappee. Great snuff

S

Toque Quit, Toque natural, 41 Photo Lilly Natural (new favourite), 6 Photo Golden Natural and F&T High Dry Toast are top quality in my personal opinion.

D

SG Silky Dark is very plain, very wonderful and, sadly, very much used up till my next order comes through. Identical to Viking Dark as many here will tell you, though I have no personal experience. It also works well as a neutral but potent stiffener for other SG darks if required.

U

Toque Natural, Toque Natural toast, Viking Blonde. Those are the three that I have the most experience with.

C

My current favorite even though its probably not considered a plain snuff is F&T HDT also another good one that is a true plain snuff is the Samuel Gawith Blue Crest, i can take huge pinches of the blue crest its a very good beginners snuff in my opinion (super easy to take).

A

I am not sure if this is a plain tobacco snuff like all of the other Vikings mentioned. Although Viking Dark is absolutely incredible! I cant believe I have just gotten around to it, due to some reviews claiming it smells like Viking Brown. It has the same base as Viking Brown and Viking Thors Hammer, although is strongly different. Dark has a stronger smokier earthy scent, while having Raw Olive, Fig, and Plum overtones. The snuff is beautifully and delicately balanced with a scent that slowly bleeds off after 10-15 minutes. This has to be my absolute favorite snuff at the moment and I do not see this changing any time soon. If you haven’t had the pleasure of trying this snuff yet, and you are a fan of natural tobacco snuffs do your self the favor of picking this up on your next order.

S

@Aamon out of curiosity, do you know how Viking Brown and Viking Dark compare to Sam Gawith Kendal Brown Plain?  (The unscented one.)  Or their scotch black?  I’m really interested in trying those, but if the Sam Gawith ones are the same snuff at half the price, well…

5

If you want to try Viking Dark without the premium price, get SG Silky Dark. Same thing different label there was actually a picture of someone who received a tin with a “Silky” label stuck on top of a “Viking” label. Viking Brown is supposedly KB Plain, but I don’t know if that is 100% correct or just conjecture

A

@smm I have not tried SG Dark or SG Kendal Brown plain, though I can say that Viking Brown and Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown are quite similar. Viking Brown is a little more smokier, and has a heavier herbaceous rich earthiness to it. While the SG Kendal Brown Original isn’t as heavy in the smoky and rich environment, it does though have a faint citrus orange note which makes a more sweet and less smoky snuff in nature which I really enjoy.

I have noticed though that Samuel Gawith has a little more consistent grind, nothing too significant or troubling though it is noticeable. This should not put you off the Viking Range even in the slightest.

@50ft_trad I have heard rumours that they are the same snuffs, or very similar anyway. I had suspicions since my first tin or Viking came in the exact type vacuum sealed tin, which I absolutely love by the way. As I mentioned earlier, Samuel Gawith seems to me to have a more consistent grind than Viking, in Viking there seems to always be a few larger particles in the tin not many, though Samuel Gawiths seem to not have this.

Is it the SG Black Rappee that you are comparing Viking Dark to? I need to update my list

M

Sam Gawith Black Rappee is nothing like Viking Dark.

Black Rappee is fermented several times with salt water.  It is BLACK, salty, and delicious.

A

I will second the S.Gawith   Black Rappee  and   London Brown.

Don’t take Black Rappee if you are going out.   Your nose looks as though you desperately need the services of a good chimney sweep,    Lord knows what the neighbours think of my personal hygiene  if they have ever seen me after using Black Rappee.  My hooter looks like the Black Hole of Calcutta after using it.

A

Lol, I always made a point of only using SG black rappee right before a shower just because it was so dark n’ dirty

S

Man, I’d love to try the London Brown.  Still looking for a shop that’ll ship it to the (non-Germany) continent.

V

@Conk, I would recommend trying South African snuffs, particularly Taxi Red. Just be warned, it is coarse, moist and fluffy. It’s the third coarsiest snuff after SG Rappee and neftobak. If you find Taxi enjoyable, you might try NTSU black as well, which has even more ammonia. You can easily air the beast out overnight if you are not fond of it. Or you could start with Babaton Blue, it’s the same cut, only less nicotine, a tad drier and no ammonia whatsoever (I suspect it’s just an old stock issue - natural loss of moisture and ammonia).

EDIT: snuffstore.co.uk has just restocked Taxi Blue. A little bit weaker on nicotine, this could be the best introduction to the realm of SA snuffs.

Then there’s Icelandic snuff - neftobak, the one made by state monopoly ATVR, sold in 50 g plastic cans and 45 g plastic horns (the same snuff in two different containers, horns are absolutely airtight, but cans are more convenient for pinching). Utterly recommended, but very hard to get. Unfortunatelly, neftobak is available only in Iceland. If you happen to be there, please take an opportunity and procure as much as you are allowed (if you don’t enjoy it, you can trade it here, at Snuffhouse). Coarse, moist, strong, and saturated with ammonia. It’s one of so few plain snuffs where you can actually feel the Tobacco. Using math terms, this and South African snuffs are tobacco square. Neftobak has one major drawback - it is expensive, GBP 12 for 45 g horn.

Mind you, these are not office snuffs (the Drip)!

Talking about fine and dry plains, Neffa Ifrikia rustica snuff should be mentioned. Another fine and medium dry plain snuff is Jaxons SP Premium, stronger and plainer than WoS Natural (visibly different tobacco used). And just for the record - SG Red Crest is totally, even dully plain. It could well be a point of reference for assesing the level of plainness of plain snuffs.

Finally, there’s one representative of super fine grind plain snuffs league, which doesn’t fall into Indian white category, but approximates them in grind: Dholakia Sparrow.

B

I have not tried these, however if you ask me plain snuff is simply the best.

T

And some luxury snuffs from Sir Walter Scott:age border rappee, golden horn, thrice brewed,st.james parish blend, auld alliance!

S

Don’t forget Havana Toast & Lundy Foot. I think Latakia Blend is a plain snuff, haven’t tried that yet though. Lundy Foot is a need to try if you like high nicotine snuffs. Same with St James Parish and its intense flavor.

S

Dholakia Black is another good plain snuff to have around.

C

This is great! Not for my bank account, but I didn’t realise how much I was missing out on. @volunge - your knowledge is impressive! Cheers, all!

I’ll start with with an order of pure plain snuffs and save buying more toasted varieties for now (I have a lot of these hanging about).

My current excuse for blowing my nose in the office so much is ‘hayfever’ and when it gets to winter it’ll be a ‘cold’.

5

My stash contains a few different plain snuffs for mixing and home scenting. I add in maybe 20 percent of a highly scented FT, or thirty percent of something like Firedance or Celtic Talisman, to make a very pleasant but lightly scented snuff. In bulk (100g or above) I have… SG Yellow Crest SG Blue Crest Tq Plain Coarse Tq Rustica GH KB Plain SG London Brown V. Thors Hammer I’ve probably got a few others tucked in smaller quantities.

Z

With this thread reincarnation, I must put in a plug for American scotches. Rooster is my rock!

J

@Zanaspus , think honey bee, navy sweet and buttercup are worth picking up? Got an opportunity to trade some cigars for them.

S

Another way to get great plain snuff is to get good tobacco leaf and make it yourself.

V

There are four plain snuffs in Bernard line as well:

Feinster Kownoer - dark, moist, medium coarse, salty, somewhat similar to SG KB, with a citrussy note; milder than KB, but still nice burn (the only paraffin-free Bernard snuff!), Gekachelter Virginie - dark, slightly smoky, medium coarse,

Alt Offenbacher Kostlich (a blend of three tobaccos) and Civette Extrafein (the plainest Bernard snuff in point of constituents: tobacco, water, paraffin oil and salt). AOK and Civette are on my need-to-try list.

Z

@jholen I’m not the hugest fan of sweet scotches, but many here are.  Think tobacco and icing sugar. If that works for you, go for it.

J

@zanaspus they’re really that sweet? Think I’ll pass then…

A

Toque Quit is very much moorish! Struggling to put it down

N

Any indian Madras snuff is also highly recommend for a try.

C

I still haven’t tried Indian Madras snuffs. Why, I don’t know.

V

@Conk It’s been a while since the last time Dholakia Madras Toast was on stock at Snuffstore/Mr. Snuff.

For the meantime it can be purchased directly from Dholakia (http://www.dholakiaherbal.com).

The only vendor who ships other Madras snuffs worldwide is the USA-based hookah1 online store (http://hookah1.com/HOOOKAH2/index.php?route=product/category&path=6\\_21). You have to purchase a box (say, 12 X 50g), shipping to Europe is USD 82.25, a little bit of a deal breaker here, though per gram it’s still cheaper than some popular British snuffs.

Let’s hope the promissed new 6 Photo MG Madras snuff will reach Snuffstore this year…

M

I have too many plain tobacco snuffs to choose just one. I am leaning toward 6 Photo LA Natural, Viking Brown, F&T HDT, but my taste varies according to the time of day, season of the year, and of course, my mood at the moment.

V

Another plain one - FUBAR Snafu Plain. Just like 6 Photo Natural, it’s fine and oiled (hence could be mistaken as ‘moist’ or ‘semimoist’) plain, fairly strong snuff.

And if white snuffs, American dry scotches, toasts, roasts and greased/oiled/buttered Madras-type snuffs fall under the plain snuff category, let’s add two more FUBARs on the list: Toasted and Grunt.

On a side note, I would evaluate Grunt as fairly low on nicotine. (In)famous ashtray reek was still present in the last batch, but potency was rather disappointing. FUBAR Toasted is at least as strong as Dholakia Sparrow, only deeper roasted and oiled.

G

My experience is only limited to Indian snuffs. The scents closest to smoking cigars or a pipe are the Madras types. Pure tobacco bliss. Please try any of the Madras ranges accessible in your area. The dark ones may be ghee roasted and will have a buttery, nutty taste, but the lighter ones are processed differently. Do not know how, but they are pure tobacco bliss. Has a good burn with intense tobacco flavour and nic. Will stir up your sinuses. So good after a hot, spicy meal on a cold day. Do try them (if you have not already).

V

I haven’t tried it yet, but Dholakia Smoker’s Blend is a plain snuff, too. Now available at snuffstore.co.uk.

Six Photo MG Madras is finally there as well!

T

If American Scotches are included, Swisher Starr is a good one.  Leathery, with only a slight burn, it lacks the smokiness of other scotches.  Just good old plain tobacco goodness.

B

@Thepeug if it’s tobacco scented and you can snuff it up your nose for nicotine/tobacco enjoyment then that would fit the definition of a plain snuff if you ask me.

A

@bob that’s a great question. For me personally toasts, scotches, and pretty much anything scented with contents other than blending tobaccos, salt+soda, and the vessel it’s aged in I don’t think of as plain. To me this thread is going off the rails but we all have our outlooks. My nose likes Plains including but not limited to: SWS Golden Horn, WoS Natural and Toque Quit. Would love to try some more. Also there are the Dark Plains. Viking Dark is a powerful treat

A

WoS lists Plain as a separate type of snuff from Toast & Scotch in this article https://sharrowmills.com/pages/beginners-guide-to-snuff For people like me that are sensitive to many toasts, and who also love “Plain” snuffs, it may just be nice to note if they are smokey. Of course my perspective is self-centered but for the purpose of helping others I have to think there are other future snuffers who might read this thread and appreciate this distinction

P

My head agrees with you @ar47 but my nose thinks otherwize . It would argue that toasts like WoS Irish 22 or 41 Photo Yellow Lily Natural exemplify facets of the absolute essence of plain tobacco flavours .

It d go further and allow the full range of cures and soaks, cooks and fermentations too :D…even a hint of scenting if it elevates the tobacco flavour .Rosnski Tabacum and Sixphoto LA natural aren’t by rights , ‘plain’ snuffs, but my nose finds them more ‘natural’  and evocative of good tobacco than something like an SG kendal brown . It’s just wired to smell that way .

I go through phases of craving plain snuffs . I ve been on a bit of a natural snuff trip since last september . My staples recently are…

WoS Natural , love this stuff, think it’s highly underrated , must have chuffed a pound of it since christmas .

Viking Blonde … I get through quite a bit of this , but it seems to change slightly between batches . I had loads of one that was all buttery and quite delightful, : now I ve got a few tins that are just okay .

The other plains(ish) I really rate

Toque Natural

Toque Quit

Wos Irish 22

41Photo Yellow Lilly Natural

Thors Hammer

For some reason I only ever fancy a gram or so of these ones now’n’again .

Notable mentions for

Rosinski Tabacum

Taxi Red

Six photo LA Natural . I used pounds of this last year …mostly in a plain blend but I’m not feeling it at the moment  . I love the tobacco flour though . If Vikas @sixphoto made it totally unscented with a larger grind , I d be in snuff heaven .

Sixphoto MG Madras . early days but this might end up a staple for me.

V

@ar47, I could reiterate the same regarding English and German black (dark) snuffs. Say, SG KBs or Bernard’s GV… Some people name them “plain”, but those snuffs are smokey, too. As far as I understand, black snuff generally isn’t toasted, but it inherits that smokey character from fire-cured leaf.

However, as Mr. Rosinski explains, black snuff could be roasted, as well: "Black snuff is made from fermented tobacco, but is then additionally treated in processes such as smoke curing or roasting. Black snuff is distinguished by profound aromas which underline and intensify the tobacco flavour. “Black”, however, refers to the processing technique, it may equally be fairly light in colour. " (http://rosinski-schnupf.com/webshop/en/Black-Snuff/)

S

Can anybody say if Irish No 22 is truly plain? I got some in a trade and it has a fruity scent. It may have been cross-scented with other snuffs in the envelope.

V

Yep, @SammyD13, it’s truly plain (unscented) toast.

A

@Pikey I want some of this (good blend) Viking Blonde!

V

Adding two more plains to the list: Blast Natural and Rockit Naked.

V

@bolbam420 There are two plain RZD snuffs - Jai Hanuman (tapkir) and Jawan:

http://www.rzdholakia.com/product.php#

Not a single word about the grind in the description there, but I would guess both are fine (recall someone mentioning another RZD snuff - Swastik Chhap very similar to Dholakia Sparrow Cool, which is really fine and dusty).

Haven’t tried Natural or Scented, but my old tin of 41 Photo Yellow Lilly Mint snuff had weird scent, too. Didn’t enjoy it.

B

@volunge I have tried contacting these guys on mail last year, got no response. Will try again sometime next month. So many fans of White Elephant here but hardly any reviews on 41 Photo’s Yellow Lily range. I have some Umbrella Madras snuff coming in. Will share updates.

V

I didn’t expect much from Yellow Lilly Mint, but I was totally disappointed and lost the slightest interest in trying the plain and scented versions. I gave away my both tins of Mint after a couple of pinches. I bet the same low-nicotine tobacco stalk base is used for all three snuffs.

The White Elephant is entirely different animal. Could well be a benchmark of quality for all white snuffs.

P

The Yellow Lily Mint base looks pretty similar to the Natural but the mint feels less substantial in the nose to me . It might well be the same base oiled up though . It probably is . I think they pack the three ‘flavours’ as mixed multipacks for wholesale .

A lot of early users on here noted an absence of nicotine in the Yellow Lily Natural . I found the batch I m using as a bit pokier than that . It may lack staying power but it has a nice little shortterm rush to it . I find the scent on the Natural pretty interesting …but I only ever want an odd bump when I’m in the mood for something light …kinda the same way I am with British made toasts . I admire them …from a distance :D.

V

@Pikey I find something very raw and crude about that YL tobacco base. Scent and taste-wise. I could describe that weird scent as “rooty” or mouldy. I wouldn’t be too surprised if folks up there use roots of tobacco plants for those snuffs. The smell reminds me of freshly harvested potatoes while they are still in the field, all soily. There’s a good chance I got my tins a little bit rotten. Himtaj Black was stale and the tin of Golden all rusty. Got them from mysmokingshop and suspect them being from the very first (and the last, i.e. single) stock. It bet it wasn’t best selling snuff in 41P range. The same vendor offered 20g tins of White Elephant for less than a pound each. Unfortunately, I wasn’t familiar with WE back then. I I only had a time machine…

Does anyone recall when 41P products appeared at mysmokingshop.co.uk? 2013-2014?

Z

My current favourite plain snuff is FUBAR Grunt. Sublime stuff that snuff.

B

All time favourite plain snuff is F&T’s HDT.

S

Toque Natural Toast is a great one, too. Really has an addicting, nutty finish. Very similar to the F&T HDT but without the smokiness. I use it as an all-day snuff and as a “palate cleanser” after using a snuff with an aggressive scent.

B

Toque natural toast is one of my favorites. I have it in bulk and it may sound strange but I still have to air out the ammonia before decant into the snuffbox. It’s a really perfect kind of snuff.

A

Viking Blonde is a strong shower for me today in the Plain Snuff category

M

My new plain creation is Dr Rumney’s Brown with a healthy dash of 6!Photo Mysore Sandalwood. But I just received a tub of new Viking Dark Rappee and Scotch Dark. Both are very nice and similar to the Gawiths of similar names.

V

Hey @mrmanos, is Scotch Dark as moist as Dark Rappee?

P

I’ll jump in on this one… The Scotch Dark I received was certainly as moist as the Dark Rappee.

Edit to add:  It has fewer clumps in it though.

G

Samuel Gawith: Kendal Brown Plain, Irish D

Wilsons of Sharrow: Plain, Irish High Toast No.22

Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast

Viking Thor’s Hammer

Then there’s others like Toque Quit, Dholakia Madras Toast and *6 Photo Cheeta that I wouldn’t call plain snuffs at all.  Toque Quit has a kind of herbal quality in the background.  Dholakia Madras Toast has a back drip that burns more than in the nose, so for that reason I don’t think of it is plain; even if it is

*6 Photo Cheeta is scented but not in the sense that it carries over into your nose, for me anyway.  I’d call it a plain snuff but I don’t want to confuse people

That’s all I’ve had thus far

P

Thanks for all the suggestions.

V

@Psicko, have you found any plain snuff close to OM PVT?
