Hi everyone, I’ve been lurking here for a while but this will be my first post!
I was wondering if any of you know of a plain, air cured tobacco snuff that could be used as flour to make snus (Swedish oral tobacco). I am in the UK and as far as I know whole-leaf is not available anymore and additive free rolling tobacco is much too expensive.
Snus deliveries from Sweden are also unreliable at best (just had a tax of £71 wrongly applied to a £30 order which I refuse to pay), luckily I have just over 30 cans left so I’ll place another order at a later date. I hope however that this may be fruitful and since I often partake in plain snuff’s it could be dual use!
Nice to greet you all for the first time and I hope you’re all doing well. (P.S. I apologize in advance if this has been posted in the wrong section )
Hi and welcome aboard, @keatpd! To answer your question, I’ll copy and paste a bit from a private chat with some UK-based fella, who recently got his hands on a bag of Burley flour from said vendor:
“[…] the tobacco I ordered off Rosinski arrived in the UK no problem, I did ask them to lable it as snuff which they did.”
For the heads-up, you might want to act fast - Rosinski is winding down his business and will stop the sales by the end of May.
That’s wonderful, I’ll put an order in over the next week. It’s a shame they are shutting down as this would have been ideal as a long term supplier. Thank you for letting me know!
(Edit: just ordered a kilo, didn’t want to risk missing out)
I have also received from Rosinski, I ordered a couple of 30g pouches, about 6 10g pouches and a 500g of ground burley - absolutely no problem at my end (although larger orders might be subject to customs snooping)
Hi Clem, thank you for the info. Luckily I received an email from René Rosinski yesterday informing me that he has split my order into two and sent them individually, and has also added snuff labels to the packages to help them pass through a bit easier. Brilliant customer service on their end. Can’t wait to receive it now!
Thankfully Rosinki has split the order for me and sent them individually. I’ll keep that in mind for future orders however.
Is that still the case? On the listing for the ground burley it says “Since we have to close our business operations in May 2024 due to new, unfulfillable EU regulations, we are selling our remaining stocks of ground raw tobacco”. I would certainly like to think they would continue to sell it. Very helpful source of flour for snus users.
They told me they can carry on selling the tobacco just not the snuff. We shall see check the website once they stop selling snuff. Shame as they have some really nice snuffs.
I for one will be crossing my fingers . Funnily enough I haven’t yet tried any Rosinski snuff. I see them when placing orders but for some reason I’ve never put them in the cart, I’ll have to give some of them a try before they disappear.
For anyone who’s interested, both packages (2x 500g burley flour), arrived at my home today. They flew right through customs with no problems at all. Thank you for recommending them to me @volunge and thanks to Rosinski for the great service!
Hi @ALLex, With the flour I’ve made two batches of oral snus now and used it as nasal snuff. The overwhelming scent and taste is undoubtedly cocoa powder, with a noticeable bitterness that becomes weaker post-alkalization. The next most dominant aromas are dry hay and leather which are quite common in several raw tobaccos. I could not pick out anything that would indicate this tobacco has been fermented (that sour rolling tobacco smell); nor are there any ‘barnyard’ notes.
As for the nicotine, I would says it’s definitely strong but on the lower end of the strong scale, if that makes sense. Used nasally and without alkalization it has a stingy but pleasant burn, which doesn’t seem to increase very much after alkalizing and has the aromas mentioned above unadulterated by any ammonia. After mixing up all the ingredients you get something very similar to the recognizable characteristics of a ‘plain’ stuff (Think WoS Plain but more chocolaty, rich and with less hay notes).
Just as a side note, since the smell of chocolate was so strong I decided to add 10ml of orange flavouring to the snus post cook of 100g of flour and got something almost identical to the smell of Terry’s Chocolate Orange. If looking to use this as the sole flour for oral snus however, i would definitely recommend using sweetener alongside the salt, not enough to taste it particularly but just enough to offset the noticeable bitterness.
Hope that helps! Message back there’s anything else you want to know.
(P.S I would say this is a fine-medium grind flour)
