I am a pipe smoker and a snuff taker. And it seems like the two are always competing for my attention. I was wondering how others enjoy the two hobbies.
Immensely, but only while awake.
Lol I guess I could have phrased that better
when i did both (and probably will start again, winter and laziness left me to just snus) it was always snuff to wake up, pipe on a lazy morning, either snus, indian oral snuff or dip to shower, followed by snus or snuff all day if i was busy, or snuff, snus and pipe if in or having a walk, pipe in the evening and ideally before bed but often double snus. snus, snuff and cigars when out drinking. basically each form of tobacco found a place in my day that it was most suited to. snuff and pipe rarely occurred at same time, but if they did it was usually a plain tobacco snuff at the start of a long mid nicotine smoke.
I do snuff mostly. If I’m going to smoke my pipe i need at least a hour to set aside for it so lately i haven’t had the time but its a shame because honestly i enjoy my pipe and find it more relaxing then snuff.
I do snuff, snus, and enjoy my pipes, all in perfect harmony.
Pipe and snuff seems a better combination then either of them with a cigar?
I enjoy my pipes and snuff and snus. I rarely have snuff and a bowl at the same time. I smoke a pipe for the aroma. I snuff for the aroma. (I get my nic from snus and a PV) Most of my favored snuffs do not mix well with my favored pipe tobacco. Try Peach or Pomegranate and Latakia sometime you will see what I mean. lol I do find Toque USA Whiskey and Honey goes well with rum flavored tobaccos.
I tried the pipe but couldn’t get into it. Snuff for me is far more enjoyable
Oh I forgot to add; Coffee goes good with the pipe and snuff is better with tea .
I enjoy a snuff or a chew while indoors, and a pipe or hand rolled smoke while outside. Nothing can replace a pipe by a wood burning stove or a camp fire. Its amazing how tobacco “collections” can accumulate.
pipes, cigars, and snuff, as my inclination and circumstances dictate; it’s all good
Has anyone tried mixing in a little snuff with their pipe tobacco, or sprinkling a little on top for flavour?
@canadiansnuffer I tried it once on a whim. Put a pinch of my favorite all-day natural (SG Blue Crest) at right about the mid-point of a bowl of Villager '88 After Dinner. It was interesting, but it burned so hot and so fast that by tge time I realised I had gotten to it, it was already floating away in a cloud of blue smoke. In the end, I feel it would have gone better appreciated in my nose, and I have doubts as to how healthy the salt is to the bowl.
I can’t often enjoy a pipe so mostly I take snuff. I love cigars and enjoy a good bowl of pipe tobacco but snuff is relatively cheap and it’s so convenient. There is nowhere I go during the week where snuff is unwelcome but cigars and pipes are right out almost everywhere nowadays. I’ll age myself but we used to smoke cigars and pipes in the office and the only complaints we got were why didn’t you bring enough to share.
When I worked at a hospital in the late '60s there were ashtrays everywhere and nowhere but the rooms with oxygen was smoking disallowed. Now you cannot even smoke in your car in the parking lot of the local hospital. Understandable in that milieu. Oddly, snuff is also banned.
I usually get up, have a pinch or two of snuff, then a cigar with my first cup of coffee before breakfast. In the afternoon it’s mostly snus with the occasional pinch of snuff. After dinner is when I really get snuffing, along with a pipe or two or three (depending on how late I’m up). If I get to the pipe early enough in the evening I may accompany it with coffee, though usually it’s bourbon or scotch if I’m in the mood. On nights when I am watching TV with the family I’ll snuff, since I don’t want to smoke up the living room. I generally confine pipe smoking to my den/library.
I like to have a large diversity of choices with my cigars, snuffs and pipe tobaccos. I like scented snuffs, but I prefer non-aromatic pipe blends (ie English/Balkan, VaPer, and Virginia Flakes). Cigars I like full-bodied traditional styles, DE’s (Tabak and Naturals), and cheapie small cigars like Marsh Wheeling and Parodi.
@Hitsuzen I never thought about damage to my briars… If I do experiment I will use a clay or a cob. Doesn’t really seem worth it however. Snuff is my staple, but I really enjoy a pipe when I have time.
I pipe when I want to, and I snuff when I want to.
Pipes are reserved for quiet times when I’m able to devote my attention to it, or if it enhances that which I’m doing at the moment.  Personally, piping is the neediest of all tobacco, and requires a bit of practice and devotion to get the full experience. It requires routines both large and small.
Snuff is a whenever-it-needs-to-happen thing. It’s a lot of fun to do snuff socially, because a lot of my friends and employment cohorts are also new snuffers. We do them at the bar, we do them at the shop, we use it as a way to get our nicotine when other methods are not convenient.  It’s fun to watch other buddies’ eyes water, the big grins, the “oh that’s GREAT” croons and the “…what the HELL did you just make me sniff?”Â
Cigars, just as a side note, are usually so easy, all it requires is a place to sit, stand and smoke.  Which is also perfectly acceptable.
Basically, find the time and the right fit for the perfect tobacco, and you’ll be right as rain.  There are no wrong choices, unless you aren’t happy. Â
