Pipe tobacco snuff

Made some snuff from captn black royal, had a pouch my sis got me with a pipe for my bday…the baccy was dry as hell when i got it, so into my grinder it went ( girlfriend not pleased with that lol) decided to drop a few chai spice tea bags in with the grind, plus about 5g. Quit ( was worried it was gona be low on nic ) came out with a pretty nice snuff IMO… great with my morning coffee.

i tried using chai teab bags to scent my snuff and it dident work idk how to get it scented

Probably better to make it into a strong tea and use that liquid to moisten the snuff.

I’m not sure that tobaccos made for the pipe will translate successfully to snuff. I did have great success with a Firedance Flake snuff during the drought/embargo/shortage of the recent past, but that’s been the exception for me. There’s also the cost factor; good pipe weed isn’t cheap and converting anything good enough to smoke into snuff would run into some serious money as well. A decent bulk pipe tobacco will run around 7-15 cents a gram before any additional ingredients or handling are factored in. Leaf tobacco is about 2 cents a gram and is 100% pure tobacco. Pipe weed, even blending types have additional ingredients added. The amount of propylene glycol added to some pipe tobacco borders on heinous. I don’t even want to think about the laboratory experiments that go into aromatics. Everyone has their own level of passion, interest and willingness to invest time in this endeavor, so YMMV. For my buck it’s more fun, more economical and a better end result starting with raw, albeit cured, tobaccos. Spend a little time with each to get acquainted then off to the lair for some weird science. No worries. Just me shooting my mouth off. Again.

I wish I could find tobacco leaf for 2 cents a gram. I’ve looked online, but when you factor in shipping etc, buying small amounts is uneconomical. You can’t just grind up tobacco and expect to end up with snuff. Pretty much any tobacco is going to need something extra added. I found from my experiments with cigarette tobacco that alkaline ingredients already seem to be added, but raw tobacco will need sodium carbonate or similar. Most if not all tobacco will need to have salt added. Adding salt was the ‘eureka moment’ for me during my experiments. It totally changes the flavor, and homemade snuff will suddenly take on the characteristics of commercial snuff when it has salt added. You need plenty, in the region of 5-10% by weight. It sounds like a lot until you try it. I have made SP that is as good as any bought SP I’ve tried using medium-quality cigars for tobacco. I only did this because I got the cigars for free from a friend and I don’t tend to smoke cigars much. Buying cigars as a source of raw material would be prohibitively expensive.

I tried this with some Happy Bogie by SG it turned out pretty good, never thought about adding tea to it though. Maybe some SG Golden Glow or FVF and earl grey.

@doctorbeat: De Kralingse Molens can provide you with ground flue cured Virginia in two varieties: 250 mu and 400 mu. Jaap Bes.

@snuffmiller‌ I’d love to get the finest milling FCV you can produce. Do I need to buy directly? Shipping seems a bit high so I’ll look at other options unless you know of another shipper. I managed to use up that sample in record time. Absolutely wonderful, as are all of your snuffs.

My experiments grinding up rolling/pipe tobaccos into snuffs have resulted in things that were never better than mediocre and most were bad, I think most pipe tobaccos are just too sweet. But it’s not like I’ve done it more than maybe four times so what do I know. They certainly “worked” in the sense that they delivered nicotine, and the scents tended to be long-lasting

i hope my order comes in soon or i can figure out how to scent it without using essential oils. this homemade snuff is starting to turn me off of snuff

Maybe squeeze the zest out of citrus fruit peels into the snuff?

@jeffcraft1‌ IM me your address info here and I’ll hot shot some snuff your way. It isn’t civilized to let a fellow snuffer go without quality nostril nostrums. I’ll send you a little variety pack so you’re not left scratching for crumbs while waiting for your order to come in. If you want it express let me know. You supply the postage, I’ll supply the snuff. 'tis the least I can do for a friend in need. Cheers

thanks man. i really appreciate it

@jeffcraft1‌ My pleasure.
