Pipe tobacco (like twist or flakes and plugs) good to chew ??

I am going to try some pipe tobacco as chew. In the old times it was quite common for people to first chew their pipe tobacco
(like miners, sailors and other people) and later smoke it (after it was dry again). Anybody on here does this and can
recommend brands or share some opinions on the idea ?

Gawith Rope (aka twist) tobaccos are actually intended for both smoking and chewing. I’ve tried chewing on other types of tobacco and found it to be an unsatisfying experience. They look like unsliced lengths of dark rope, and you can slice off a bit as you need it.
smokingpipes.com seems to have a lot in stock. Search by “rope” or “twist”

My understanding is that it was chewed but not left to dry and then smoked. They either chewed it or smoked it but not left the used portion to dry and then smoke it. I could be wrong on this but I don’t think used chewed pipe tobacco would smoke all that well. As to the other, cpmcdill is correct stick with ropes/twist. SG and G&H make good ones (they smoke well, I cannot say what they taste like as chew).

I wouldn’t bother smoking any chewed twist ,since most of the flavor and nicotine has already been used up.  Some say brown rope is stronger in nicotine than black. I find them equally strong. The ropes or twists  for smoking from GH & SG are not very pleasant to chew.

If you want chew twists I suggest GH pig tails they are a smaller twists and flavored .  https://mrsnuff.com/gawith-hoggarth-twist-c-186\_188.html . Too expensive for my pocket.  SG  https://snuffstore.co.uk/twist-samuel-gawith-c-82\_136\_137.html

Swedish Snus is a better choice for oral tobacco use. They have higher standards and lower TSNAs

Hate to disagree, but imho, the the brown twists from G&H are among the finest smoking tobaccos on the planet.

Thanks for the answers. I used the Gawith

…before and will now revisit a few of them. I will tell you how it works out and of course about my experience
with others.

I’m pretty sure he meant the smoking ropes are not pleasant as chew but still great in the pipe.

Anything can be good if you get accustomed to it - but my first reaction to chewing twists (black XL) wasn’t a very positive one.  I mean, it was OK, strong flavor and all - but nothing I would make an effort to develop an affinity for.  I do occasionally dip a little shag cut pipe tobacco but more for shits and giggles than anything.

My bad. Misread the comment,
