I dont smoke pipe tobacco, but I bought 3 ounces of carter hall and prince albert for incense.  I am extremely limited in variety in my area.  The only others I can get are some vanilla one I cant remember the name of but I will pick up soon, and tops which I wont.

The way I do it is I turn my electric stove burner up pretty high.  Throw a bit of pipe tobacco into a pot, and as soon as it starts to smoke I take the pot off and swirl the tobacco around and it will smoke well.  I repeat this process until the tobacco is gray. This probably seems like blasphemy to you guys.  Today my place smells like Prince Albert!

I’m on the hunt for a cheap pipe tobacco with an excellent room note. Any suggestions?

J

Blasphemy no, but does this seem like sacrilege, yes. However, after giving it some thought, you’re golden. As for suggesting tobaccos for you, I don’t think I’m quite ready to conspire.

N

Captain Black White.

K

I am not an expert but the pot being less hot than a flame, I guess the aroma will probably come up richer than if you would have smoked it in a pipe. Fire destroys a great deal of the tobacco aromatic compounds.

B

Any online pipe tobacco shop usually have floor sweepings  aromatic blended they sell cheap $20 a lb. Pm me and I will link you the the site

D

I always thought Prince Albert smelled like someone peed on a campfire.  I agree with Nachman…Captain Black has one of the best room notes I have ever smelled.

J

Peterson Connoisseur’s Choice or Sweet Killarney are both renowned for their excellent room note. My wife is a big fan of CC, the only tobacco she is actively happy for me to smoke in the house (she tolerates the others though, thankfully in this weather!). GH Cherry Vanilla is nice too. I’d far rather you sent the tobacco to me to be used in the way it was intended, but if you must warm it up in a pot, then go ahead…lol!

T

I like your idea but wouldn’t one of those charcoal disks designed for incense be better.

I

Lane Limited: 1Q
The above tobacco is a well loved aromatic. On smokingpipes.com, an 1 oz of this will set you back $3.39.

Nobody reacted to my comment, but I have a real question to pipe smokers.

Like I said I am far from being an expert, I had no more than 25 bowls in my entire life. But one thing that struck me is, pipe tobacco smell SO MUCH better in the tin compared to the smoke resulting from combustion. I believe some 90% of the fine aromatics are lost when it starts consuming. I see that as a net loss. This almost leads me to think that tobacco is not meant to be smoked, at all (except for the nicotine intake, but for that to be efficient, smoke needs to be inhaled).

I know there are millions of pipe smokers that beg to differ from my point of view, but who can explain to me? Please.

J

@KebAMP For a lot of pipe smokers it’s all about the tobacco. The toppings added are in a sense a gimmick mostly to hide poor quality tobacco but also to create a pleasant room note much like the incense method. This helps the pipe smoker to remain comfortably indoors with his family. It is really the toppings that are not meant to be smoked.

J

But in my case, it could be fermented dog crap… as long as it smells amazing I don’t care the “quality” of tobacco.

Its odd how one man’s trash can be another’s treasure.

B

Captain black or Lane 1Q in bulk is cheaper and has a nice honey/vanilla room note. Have you thought of buying those charcoal pellets used for Hookahs? They are used for incense such as frankenscense (sp?) If you have a cigarettes store in your area that has hookah supplies they carry the charcoal. They are pretty cheap and you can get these little holders or just burn it in an ash tray. Heck you might even pick up some of the hookah tobacco and see how it smells?

KebAMP, most pipe smokers do not inhale. Nicotine intake happens also in the mucous membrane in the mouth and sinuses. There are a few pipe tobaccos that have a nicotine content that knock me on my butt and I do not inhale. The old drug store blends are known for being high in nicotine. Twists and plug tobaccos are also NIC BOMBS!

B

slow light burn and you don’t lose that smell so much.

B

I don’t smoke a pipe to please anyone but myself. If it smell like burning rubber and I am enjoying it that’s all that matters. I don’t enjoy tooty-fruti gooey tobacco.I want to taste tobacco when I light up. Virginia’s, Perique, Latakia, Burley,Turkish and Orientals. Those Aromatic tobaccos great for incense; someone finally found a use for that tobacco that wasn’t up to snuff…

B

I think aromatics are wonderfull. My favorites are straight but aromatics have their place. I think Bob’s chocolate flake is a great example. The chocolate ads to the base tobacco instead of covering it. like the way a good jasmine green tea still tastes like tea but a little nicely floral.

K

Just a precision, by aromatics I mean the natural, fragile aromatic compounds that are present in properly cured tobacco leaves. When lit, I found most of them get burnt and destroyed.

On the contrary, added flavors (vanilla, cherry, etc) seems to resist heat better and passes up in the smoke.

@Busta   I do not inhale neither. But I haven’t found pipe smoking to be any better than just looking at tobacco for nicotine uptake. Maybe I am doing it wrong, or maybe I don’t have the right tobacco, IDK.

@Bob  “slow light burn and you don’t lose that smell so much” But you still lose some and that for me sounds like spoilage.

M

re: nicotine uptake, seriously some pipe tobs, like a potent cigar, will knock you back, trust me. Even for a heavy cigarette smoker.

J

Yes @bob There are quite a few well made pipe tobaccos that are topped expertly. The Chocolate flake is a perfect example. I did say “mostly”.  It seems I missed the point anyway. I would have to agree that tin scent does not carry over well to smoking. Certainly it is not the same. I do find plenty enough to enjoy though. Exhaling through the nose or a slight french inhale brings out the best of it. Tobacco incense is a great idea except for the second hand smoke factor. KebAMP may be on to something with vaporizing tobacco for its scent however ridiculous it may seem to anyone who enjoys pipe smoking. The idea that tobacco scent gets wasted by smoking it is a little strange though, not that I don’t understand the logic but the entire reason for pipe tobacco’s existence is for it to be smoked in a pipe.

K

I just found this. I don’t know if they are any good, but the intent is right on topic. Could worth a try, for around 60$ per unit.

I have never known those to be used for anything but Mary J.

H

Have you got money to burn? If you wanna burn pipe tobacco, do the decent thing and burn it in a pipe…completely mental

K

@Harlequin It works for C.S. so I guess it should work for tobacco too.

@henwrench Funny cause money to burn is exactly what comes to mind when I think of exposing tobacco to a direct flame

The manufacturer puts an emphasis on the health benefits, but in the Testimonial section you can read some comments on the improvement of the aroma.

J

I got some blenders gold vanilla for 15 bucks for 12 oz, and it smells pretty damned good. I know you guys are pissed. But I love the stink,

I’m very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

J

A side note on vaporizing: There is plenty of vaporization going on in normal pipe smoking. The pipe tobacco that is near the cherry and at proper temperatures is where all the flavor comes from. It may be that some are distracted by the tobacco that is actually burning. It does take some getting used to.

P

From the sounds of it, you are in the US. “Half-and-Half” is, around my house, said to smell like cherrys. Its in the same ballpark as Carter Hill and PA(which is my favorite drugstore brand, you sick SOB).
