This isn’t a post about which you use, either pinching or sniffing off the back of then hand, but about how you do it. For example, do you use one bigger pinch and take that to one nostril after the other, or do you use two pinches, a seperate one for each? Same with back of the hand, do you have one bigger ‘pile’ or two smaller ones (or two big ones I suppose)! I don’t think I’ve explained that very well, but hopefully you get the idea. Personally I use one big pinch, left nostril first, then roll the pinch back and take it to the right. If Im sniffing off the hand I use two smaller piles, one at a time.

Whatever works. I’m a pincher and SOMETIMES I use back of hand method. I take half a pea-sized pinch and sniff, and then I take another half-pea-sized amount and take it. When I do back-of-hand, I make a little bump- take it- and then repeat with the other nostril

@Koba22: I generally do the same as you, except when using the back of the hand technique I find I can inhale larger pinches, especially of toasts and scotches.

@toffeenose I agree. For some reason I can take alot more scotch snuff off the back of my hand than I can in a pinch or anything else. I wonder why? I can take almost twice as much! lol

I haven’t taken a snuff off the back of my hand in months, come to think of it. Don’t forget the thumb-nail method! @toffeenose et @transistor, is it really more, or is it just not as compressed as when you pinch it? No, I’ve witnessed this phenomenon as well.

I take two bumps off the back of the hand and on rare occasions when I pinch, I take two pinches, one for each nostril. When I use my thumbnail sometimes for schmalzlers, I use one big pile for both nostrils.

I hardly ever back of the hand, but when I pinch it is one big pinch for both nostrils. Stefan

I usually snuff during the day while I am at the computer, and I usually use a spoon.

I usually pinch, one pinch that i take from one nostril to the other. One thing I allways wondered about is amount. One man’s definition of a pinch is different from anothers.

I always used the back of the hand with a bump for each nostril…since I’ve mastered the pinch, that’s all I use, aside for my spoon for the super fines(WE and DW) and a bullet when on the go. With the pinch i always use a seperate pinch for each nostril.

Fish, does the spoon work better on we and dw? I use pinch for those. I figure a spoon would send it to the back lf my throat. I figure with a spoon with those it would have to be a couple inches away from the nostril.

I pinch. It’s more practical; my nose is smallish and right nostril clogs easily so control is the key.

I’ve never mastered the back of the hand method - I usually smear it all over my nose rather than get any inside… So I have some learning to do obviously. I usually pinch unless it’s a very strong snuff like Clove, when I use a spoon to measure a very small amount. When I pinch it’s a bit about the size of an appleseed spread between both nostrils. Then I often go back for a second!

@ddavelarsen the size of an appleseed??? That’s WAY too small of a pinch for me-- jeesh… am I doing way too much or is an appleseed the norm? lol

@EricHill78 It works way better for me, I just give it a very light inhale aimed towards the front of my nose, and don’t have any problem with it hitting my throat. I can’t pinch, because it just sems to fall right out of stubby fingers…lol!

@transistor, I read here one day that was the size pinch someone else used and that’s what I’ve been shooting for ever since. I have no idea what the norm is! Sometimes, with some easier snuffs, I do get a much larger pinch. But I don’t think my nose is up to big amounts all the time yet.

Here at my desk I use a butter knife, but out and about, I use one large pile for each side off the back of my hand.

@ddavelarsen: I make two piles the size of a pea on the back of my hand, one for each nostril and repeat every 10 minutes or so, but that is probably on the heavy side. I didn’t start there, but as with any addiction/habit, it grows.

@Nachman, I hate to be too dense but I’m trying to picture this. Do you sniff both piles at once, or one at a time? Often I take a good pinch every few minutes too, I have a pretty high nicotine tolerance.

When im sniffing off the back of the hand I have two piles, and sniff one at a time. The left one first with the right nostril, then the right pile with the left nostril.

One long line along the back of the hand. Left nostril first (it senses better than the right though it is usually a little congested), tilt the head slightly as I move along the line to finish with the capacious right nostril. Immediately dust with a handkerchief.

I snuff one pile with left then one pile with right and in a few minutes repeat the whole process.

I use the back of the hand more than the pinch but I must be an addict or something…my piles for each nostril are at least the size of my thumbnail and I’ll repeat immediately after getting the second side done if it doesn’t “feel” like enough.

I’m going to have to practice the back of the hand technique - I feel like a ninja saying that. Anything I can do to get more snuff up my nose has to be a good thing. Edit: Whoa! Talk about overdoing it!

Depends on what I’m sniffing actually. If I am using a Pschol Ozona snuff then I tap to my hand because the tin seems to be made to do that. I do two small (or large) mounds and then sniff. If I am doing my W.E. Garret Scotch or Sweet I go with one pinch and switch nostrils.

I’m with Chrishansen, it depends on what I’m sniffing. If its a tap box I’ll use back of the hand, of course. From tins, I usually use the tip of a small buck knife, same way you’d use a snuff-spoon, which I only use on snuff. I sniff schmalzler from the back of the hand ‘cuz its easier to get it up the nose from there (if that don’t work, I use the ol’ shovel-it-in method). I got a snuffbox recently from Mr.Snuff so I’ve been working on the pinching method but it just seems messy to me so far, I must need more practice…

I pinch. About a pea-sized amount for each nostril. When I use a tap box, it’s back of hand technique (LOL @ddavelarsen 's NINJA) and I wear a thumb ring, so I tap the box against it and it helps knock the snuff out of the box and onto my hand lol. Mostly I pinch and sometimes I use my fiance’s spoon that came with her PC tripletech. That box is so damned cool. You guys need one. I do too for that matter…

Practice with the back of the hand technique is coming along, but I’m still getting way too large piles! LOL! That’s gonna take some getting used to. I wonder if I’ve smeared snuff all over my nose; probably. Yeah, hankie came away pretty dusty. I made a spoon for my tripletech that fits right in the hole. It’s the larger of the two in the picture. There’s a picture of it snug in its hole in the box too. I like it a lot better than the spoon that came with it. My tripletech is the box I carry McC Clove in, and it’s always running low… 'Cause I love that snuff.

@Transisor You will find that nunchucks constructed of broomsticks and attached with clothes line will help you achieve many things you desire in life, including your fiance’s snuff.! Nice spoons, Dlarsen! Can’t get much tighter than that!

That Dave is a crafty fella. I can attest to this first hand from the awesome ebony spoon that he sent me…beautiful craftsmanship!!!

schmalzlers I use a pipe nail and shovel it in. almost all others I use Dave’s spoon and put it on the back of my hand. depending on strength of the snuff it may be 1, 2 or 3 spoons per nostril. edm

I always use the back of my hand. I usually take a big pinch, make a bump and do one nostril. Then i do another pinch for the other nostril =D. The only time i ever pinch is with D. white, which in that case i take a big pinch, put it under one side and drop the adams apple (creates the perfect ammount of suction) then do the other.
