Which do you prefere, and why? Explain.
out of these, i prefer pinch usually. a bit more control, and it warms the snuff. I also sometimes use back of hand for fine snuff and boxcar (thumbnail with first finger wrapped round it to make a wind resistant pocket) with tap boxes. but since i prefer english snuffs, i prefer pinching.
Personally I prefer the back of hand, as I have to keep my hands clean at work. Boxcar when walking the dog, unless it’s really windy or raining then I pinch. But I’m really not keen on pinching, always makes my nose sore.
Pinch! I have no real control/feel of where the snuff is in relation to my nose otherwise, my moustache sweeps half of it away, and the other half is smeared on my face I’m almost as bad with the spoon too The other benefit is that it doesn’t look quite as strange in public as the other methods.
I do enjoy the pinch: particularly in public for obvious reasons of etiquette, but I have been known to use the back of hand when in the comforts of home. With the back of hand I am more capable of controlling the air flow and create a decent suction–also it hits harder, but not in a cocaine means.
Lately I’ve been a backhander. But I seem to go back and forth between boxcar, pinching, and back of the hand. I gave up using the little spoon - I thought I’d like it and it would be more tidy, but I found it wasn’t worth the trouble to me.
@SnuffH3ad - I started off pinching at first but after a few months I went on to the back of the hand because I can take larger amounts and at the same time I personally feel more effect or ‘hit’ and taste that way. But every now and then I take it in the Gentleman way - pinching when I want to do it in a ‘classier’ way…
Good answers everyone.
I notice that Im typically clumsy about aiming perfectly with the back-of-hand technique. But with a fine and dry snuff I seem go get a nice heavy “poof” filling the lower part of the nose where it’s supposed to with a big loose pinch sniffed semi-carelessly; kind of giving the same effect as a back-of-hand. I still pussy out and sniff a tight pinch carefully over the course of a whole minute sometimes though. I tap fluffy moist snuff like President on the back of my hand and pinch that to my nose with ease. With something coarse and heavy like Bernards Weihnacht I simply adore the boxcar technique. I still pinch it at times, but the looser it goes up - the more sexy the nicotine hit. So boxcar gets a nice fat thumbs up from me.
It is impossible to answer this question unless you tell me which snuff I am hypothetically taking.

A valid point. How about, which snuff do you find yourself partaking the most, and the least? Then figure in the ratio of pinch vs. b.o.h…
Well in that case I use pinchable snuffs more of the time. Scotches and toasts demand it to give fine control to where they land. Other general snuffs its just more convenient. Then something like Taxi or Black rappee, its pinch and shove rather than pinch and sniff. Though, schmalzers and German snuffs get back of handed or boxcared.
depends on the snuff. For all I need to get a spoon again.
I can get a massive amount of snuff with the box car with a pinch I would have to do 7 to 10 for the same dose. so yes boxcar for most of my snuffing needs. there are but only a few snuffs I pinch exclusively.Back of hand ? I don’t see the point 8-X
Ha, right on! For those who need help on what technique to use with which snuff, could the moderate to veterans list the snuff and how they partake it?
Boxcar all the way… unless I’m driving then I pinch - Don’t bother using snuff bullets when driving, you’ll kill yourself.
I like the pinch and the boxcar. The back of hand is too awkward for me. I also like bullets but only when the snuff itself is a fit for that method.
I have a dog, so I never use the pinch. I do not want my fingers to disturb snuff aroma.
I use a spoon to transfer snuff from snuffbox/tin to the back of my hand and snuff it from there. can take a lot more at once than with pinches, seem to be able to control it better, keep my fingers clean, and not risk contaminating the snuff with whatever might be on my fingers. when I’m out and about, though, I’ll generally pinch from a snuff box or use a tap box
Another reason to pinch is some snuffs clump. With a pinch, you can roll/work the snuff as you inhale to break it back down to a powder
Pinch from my all day snuffbox (usually English and Indian snuffs like 6P No.66 or WoS SM), B.o.H from tap boxes (eg. Bernard Zweifacher)
Depends on the snuff I use. The moist snuff’s I like the back of the hand.the finer snuff I like the pinch.
Neither, I prefer the Boxcar method (thumbnail.) Taking a pinch leaves skin oils and whatever other impurities may be on your fingertips in your snuffbox. Back of the hand does not work well when there is a wind. If you are sweating, the snuff sticks to your skin – you don’t sweat through the thumbnail.

In addition to my previous comment, i will always clean my hands regularly when snuffing for this. i work in a mucky environment, i must get another mrsnuff or snuffhouse box.
Depends on the snuffs storage. Tap boxes get taken from the back of the hand but if I can pinch it I’ll do that except for when my hands are dirty. Then I use a pipe nail like a spoon to scoop a portion and sniff it.
I pinch and roll as it goes up-- especially with SG snuffs-- black coffee being a good example of one that benefits with a bit of “coaxing” – it warms it a bit and breaks any clumping.
For me, it depends more on the box I am using. Commercial tap boxes and tins are always back of the hand. It is just the easiest way. I have not found a way to bring the snuff between my fingers from boxes with small holes. However, as I am moving to bulks and have started using refillable boxes, I use the pinching method exclusively nowadays. This is also a practicality. I have not found a way to bring the snuff on the back of my hand without using a spoon or fingers and if I use either of these, why not bring it right up to my nose without first putting it on the back of my hand.
One more thing. I found it often that my fingers are sweaty and the dryier snuffs get glued to my fingers requiring a bit too heavy sniff. Or some the snuff gets wasted. And my fingers are then dirty, especially under fingernails. So I use spoon while at home for these reasons, but not outdoors and out of home.
My favourite (and almost exclusive) method is boxcar - can’t explain why, no science behind it. Occasionally taking a pinch (only in case of toasts) or using the spoon of my Tripletech snuffbox. Back of hand - never.
I can pinch a mountain of harsh ultra dry American scotch snuff but put the tiniest bit on the back of my hand or worse in a spoon, and my eyes get blasted out of my face.
Depends on the snuff and tin for me. My main method and preferred is pinching. I like to warm the snuff between my fingers and can take pig pinches. If its a tap box with an easy to take snuff like gawith apricot ill use the boxcar method. But if its a stronger snuff in tap box like redbull ill tap it to back of my hand and pinch it from there. 90 percent of time I pinch.
Back of the Hand. I have never had an issue with this method. I mainly snuff in the privacy of my own home (I mainly use snus in public). Never really got the hang of using other methods such as a bullet. Also, I learned how to snuff by means of this method therefore I am quite proficient at it. However, at times I have considered trying a spoon, but for the time being the hand it is.
I tend to punch unless its a schmalzler then its off the back of the hand
I have been taking double pinches where I have a pinch in each hand and fill both nostils at the same time.
@lunecat double-barreled, eh?
I’ve been taking a large pinch and warming it between my fingers and smelling it while I do so. I then dispense some onto the web between my thumb and index finger on the opposite hand and sniff the little pile into one nostril and repeat for the other nostril, going back and forth until the pinch has run out. I will then, if necessary, take another large pinch and repeat the whole process until I have achieved a sufficient nicotine buzz and satisfaction.
I always pinch. I place the snuff on the back of my hand using a snuff spoon or a clean pipe scraper and pinch from the back of my hand. Even when I have one of my snuff bullets with me I sometimes tap out the snuff from the bullet to the back of hand and pinch.
Boxcar is nice because the snuff is all in one little compartment so it doesn’t get all over my face AS much. Generally I find boxcar/back-of-hand to give a stronger nicotine hit and scent but too messy to do in public for me. Just boxcarred two big pinches of SNAFU Plain, feels good.
Tap boxes, like Fichtennadel, back of hand, otherwise I use an improvised spoon, a cuticle pusher to great effect - My technique is to place it just beneath my nostril, then rock it up and into the front part of the nose where I like it most - right on the sweet spot.
I have found back of hand and boxcar in that order to work best for me. Back when I first experimented with snuff I tried bullets but did care for them at the time, though I have ordered a sampler six of bullets from Toque and will see. For me with a Tap Box of Gletscher Prise I find that if “too much” ends up on the back or in the box- I just go big and enjoy.
Spoon 90% of the time, boxcar when it’s a bit windy or when I’m being discreet or can’t fiddle with my spoon.
Pinch all day unless I got a tap box, then it is boxcar.
Why not both?
Off the back of hand or thumbnail is great training for whites. If you can take them off your nail without choking to death you can take big pinches the normal way without so much as clearing your throat.
Almost always pinch. If I’m using a tap box I sometimes use the boxcar method, but just as often tap the snuff into the palm of my hand and then pinch. Back of the hand is a disaster - I always end up wearing the snuff rather than sniffing it…
Being new to snuff, I prefer the control that I can exercise through pinching. Back of the hand is not only a ticket to a chest full of snuff, but anything other than a dry, fine grind tends to fly up my nose in clumps. The trials and tribulations of a newbie I guess.
Spoon.
Most time pinch
palm
Pinch for me. Greater control and better placement. Less messing about.
For me it comes down to what type of container I’m getting it out of. I use the back of the hand because I have tap boxes. I assume if one where to have a fancy flask you would use the same method.
Pinch is my usual choice, but sometimes I get it with my other finger and put it on my palm, but not that often.
I’m a recent covert to using a pinch. German snuffs get used from their tap boxes (If only Packard’s Club came in bulk!) on the back of the hand indoors or boxcared when I’m outdoors. For all but the Germans I’ll tap that last bit of snuff from my snuffbox out onto the back of my hand or my thumbnail, but mostly it’s the pinch for me!
I have recently found that once I transfer a days worth into a properly sized plastic travel container I find pinches work well- both for portion control and in warming it a bit. Until this came to be I would have stuck to saying boxcar from a tap box/tin or back of hand.
I can never handle pinch. I just end up with a ton of snuff all over my fingers and, a little in my nose. I prefer using my pipe tool spoon. I think it’s for reaming a pipe but, that’s why I have like 10 pipe tools also I lose things.
Also the box car method is just confusing when explained to me. Also sounds like it looks more shifty in public from what I under stand.
Pinches for small amounts, usually when I am already snusing. Back of hand for massive amounts when I’m just using snuff for my nic fix. I’m getting a bullet soon, so I will see how that works out and if I like it.
I have found that I take SG’s Black Rappee best from a boxcar/back of hand. I can really load up my nose with it. When I use a pinch, it just doesn’t work well. Probably due to its coarseness. I have just discovered Indian snuffs, and I go 50-50 pinch/back of hand. I find it’s also less obtrusive when I pinch at work. I don’t hide it, but I also don’t feel the need to tap into a boxcar and take snuff that way… In fact, I’m really liking generally how well a boxcar works to take snuff and not get into my brain and get a good amount.
Bullets to me so far seem to have harder to control. For ones I know will go strait down my through I tap it out onto the back of my hand from the bullet. A bullet to me seems to be able to keep it so I don’t have to constantly open a snuff box tin or something.
I have only been taking snuff for a couple of weeks but here’s what I do: Hedges - a small amount from back of hand, if out of doors a small pinch. Viking Blond - back of hand. Ditto for outside. Wilsons Best SP - Because it’s a lot finer I decant a small amount of snuff (enough for a day or two) into a small sealed plastic pot and when I want a pinch I press my index finger in and a ‘pinch’ adheres to the end of my finger. I then insert the very tip of my finger into my nostril and rotate my finger to the ‘front’ and then sniff. What seems to happen then is that the snuff is delivered to the correct part of my nose and I never get it in my throat or sinuses. I’m not sure whether I’ve described my technique properly, but whilst perhaps unorthodox, it does work.
@Thunderbird I know someone who does the exact same thing with Best SP, just gets some stuck to his index finger and gives a hard sniff.
I now use a bullet, but have to do double or triple shots, and sometimes use it as a tap box for back of hand. Good stuff guys!
I’ve ordered a bullet, just for ease when I’m out and about. Especially out in the countryside.
My everyday snuff is typically any one of the many American Scotch varieties I have (though I have some English snuff on order). I started with the pinch, but have found the boxcar to deliver much better results… much better quantity and distribution control IMHO. I’ve tried the back of the hand method, but the boxcar suits me well. Pinching is a rare occurrence anymore for me.
I was into the pinch, but have found that if I boxcar, with my thumb and middle finger, I can use my index for nostril constriction. This way I can control the flow to a much higher degree.
ive only recently started using snuff and ive instinctively used the boxcar method, itjust seems to suit me more. im still trying to get the hang of taking it into my nose, now and again i get it right, then other times i get a big hit in the throat. only been on it for less than a week so im just honing my technique, ill get there
At home or in the shop I use a spoon for a tin, boxcar for tap boxes. Out and about pinch.
Depends on the type of snuff and the containing vessel. Usually pinch due to the snuff types I like and the snuff boxes I use but if I have a tap box or bullet I will use the boxcar method. I never snuff directly from a bullet and always tap out. I generally use tripletechs and have options but nearly always pinch. Boxcar is good as you take a snuff while giving a pushing flick, good for the tougher snuffs. Pinching gives more control and to me, more flavour. Back of hand is not a method of choice right now.
One of the greatest films ever made - certainly a pair of the greatest eyebrows. Excellent! Anyway - strictly straight from the anatomical snuffbox for me: It’s the method I first learnt and therefore the one I’ve just about got right, now. I do box-car occasionally, but find this less effective. Must be a technique issue there on my part, I think. I started out with bullets, then moved onto Snuffhouse snuffboxes: I load them through the top, then tap out from the side into the anatomical snuffbox, using the slider to regulate the amount. Then vary inhalation depending on grind and/or moisture level of the snuff. A female friend of mine that I introduced to snuffing to has an interesting technique - she has quite long nails, so puts a pinch of snuff on the back of one hand, and then scoops it up using the inner surface of a finger nail on the other hand, introducing said nail to just under each nostril and sniffing.
I heard some illegal drugs are done with the nail method. I think cocaine. My boss first mentioned it to me when I told her I was doing snuff. yet another example of people think snuff is some sort of horrible illegal drug.
Pinches unless I can’t get my fingers in the container then it’s a spoon on the back of the hand for me
I prefer to pinch, coarse moist snuffs get the spoon (pinching them just compresses it into a solid ball) and tap boxes get thumb-nailed
Well, I guess I have to amend my prior statement. While the boxcar is my typical go to method for 99% of what I snuff… having only recently gotten into schmalzlers, I have now found schmalzlers are indeed best on the back of the hand. It just works for the better with this variety IMHO.

Yeah, some of my friends mention how they don’t snort drugs, so they wouldn’t snort tobacco. I remind them that people have been snorting tobacco for much longer than most drugs. Besides maybe yopo, which from some points of view wouldn’t be considered a drug. Most people that see me doing it say something along the lines of “hey, my grandma did that”… Plus, I think when you are referring to the nail method, I believe that’s when people grow their pinky nail out to dig it in little baggies. As opposed to people tapping it out on the back of the thumbnail… however I could be wrong.
Here’s how I like to snuff, I’m weird and its just how my dispenser works best.
Wow. That is some big piles. Not double mine but, noticeably bigger. Unless you have really small hands.
I pinch, but tapboxsnuff get boxcared.
@Igglet big…? I wouldn’t even have felt it.
Hmm. I should try bigger than. I just figure there is only so much I can physically get in their…
^ you’d be surprised how much snuff you can fit up there
That is correct. My doses of “daily snuff” (those who are the main source of nicotine) are around 3cm x 1,5cm.
