Pinch, Tap, or Spoon?

P

I use a tap box on the back of my hand probably 90% of the time. The rest of the tIme I use a snuff spoon. I hate pinching it because it always gives me a huge burn. I love the rococo snuff boxes that you find on Mr. Snuff and Amazon. i own 4 of them. I found the perfect spoon for like 7 bucks at a head shop. I think they are used for marijuana waxes but it i’s amazing as a snuff spoon

What does everyone else prefer?

H

I pinch! I feel I have the most control with this method. Plus I just really like the feel of it, the texture on my fingers. Though, I like a dry snuff, if I was using a moist snuff I’d probably grab a spoon.

D

I pinch 100% of the time, any snuff. Back of hand or spoon or boxcar always sends the snuff too high, but I can take huge pinches no problem, often 3-4 big pinches in each nostril at a time.

Pinch!

F

Pinching blows my face off, everytime. Just can’t get the hang of it. No, a gigantic pile on the back of my hand, a finger closing off the unused nostril and a succession of short, sharp sniffs gets the lot up no problem.

N

90% of the time i use my boxcar or tap it onto the back of my hand. Mostly because i carry several of my FlickBOXs with me every day.

The other 10% of the time is usually sitting at home reaching for a tin of toast, an american scotch, or an indian white, all of which i find much more pleasant if pinched. Several artisan snuffs i’ve found benefit greatly from a bit of warming time in the pinch, like Old Mill Sugarbush.

J

I like the Pinch. Even if I use a spoon to get the snuff out of a tin it goes into my other palm and the it’s pinched.
Once in a blue moon I like the boxcar method too. Good way to get a lot of snuff up there!

P

I usually boxcar it or my anatomical snuff box. Most of my snuff is in containers that are too narrow for me to pinch out of, or in a tap box.

Z

I use a metal Revlon nail care implement. It has a small spoon on one side, and a big flat shovel on the other.

P

I need to start using my boxcar more often. I always go for the back of my hand but after a few taps just now, I kind of like it. Maybe for the Coarser grinds and my hand for the finer grinds

M

I pinch everything for control, even if it comes outta a tap-box.

S

I’m just starting snuff. The first way I learned was the back of my hand and the boxcar method. But now I like the pinch method the best because i gives me the most control. But well, I’m just a starter, so probably it will change several times in the near future…

L

Always used the pinch method…

B

depends on the snuff. they are all good methods. Black Snuffs and Schmalzlers use a spoon. pinch I waste more on my chest then gets into the nose but I will employ it. Boxcar gets used often as well as back of hand depends on the humidity ; snuff don’t stick as much to the thumb nail.

W

I always pinch but never directly from the box or tin. I use a spoon to take it from container and pour it on the web of my hand and pinch from that.

U

Mostly pinch, and I keep a snuffmaster with me for when I’m driving.

S

The more I snuff the more I am gravitating to the pinch. Almost been at it a year now. When I started the spoon was my favorite, but it’s really nice having all your snuffing accessories attached to you.

F

Pinch only. I used spoons occasionally with White Elephant and Dholakia White but I’ve completely lost my taste for those so no need. I did , however have two super nice spoons handmade by members of this forum. One was brass and the other was ebony. Both are dearly missed.

My previous answer was just one word. Pinch! The pinch still remains my preference, although there is a slight update. When I fill my snuffbox with nice moist snuff, I will use the pinch, and keep doing so until the snuff starts to dry out and get a little dusty. Before, I used to set that snuffbox aside for the day, and put it into a tupperware box to rehydrate overnight. I’ve now found, that if the quantity of snuff isn’t worth rehydrating, that I can more comfortably used the slide door on the snuffbox and use up the rest of the snuff off the thumbnail (using what many here call the box car technique). It’s also useful for consuming the last dregs from the snuffbox, when you can’t get your fingers into the corner. I still prefer the pinch though.

P

After all these votes for pinching got me trying it for the past few days and i decided i do prefer it. i change my vote to pinch!

I

I never used to pinch (only used back of hand)until I got into taxi and black rapee. Now I sometimes take normal snuffs from the pinch, mostly because I can’t find a good tapbox.

S

I was boxcar exclusively for several months, but now I’m a pincher.  I only boxcar if my fingers are too… unsavory… to take a pinch.

C

I’m split between pinch or back of the hand depending on the snuff. Toast will get a spoon if I am at home as it clumps if I pinch… Never got into the boxcar for whatever reason… Started with the back of my hand in '98 and got used to it!

F

I posted previously that I only use the pinch method. I did, however, make this little fella at work today for my wife @Kaitlandia. I think it turned out pretty decent. image

K

It turned out great I love it! Thank you! It works great for my tiny nose holes lmao @FischTix

G

I was lucky enough to find a snuff spoon so i’m waiting to see what arrives first.  The snuff or the snuff spoon.  I’m a complete novice so we’ll see how this goes.  I figure i’ll use a spoon because i’m dealing with moist snuff

H

Well… I use them all three

40 % tapping

30 % pinching

25 % spoon

5 % use to hit the ground … on some snuff more than on others… mostly schmalzlers which I take from the back of my hand frequently use to roll off the back of my hand.

V

@Humppa, have you tried boxcar for schmai? I prefer this way for coarse ones and those KB-like. No rolling off!

H

@volunge - Yes I almost tried it and I like it. But with Schmalzler I prefer the back-of-the-hand method. Being very traditional in the bavarian way - I use my Schmalzlers out of a porcellan flask with the bavarian crest on one side on the face of Konig Ludwig II on the other.

Being honest - usually it is not about 5 % of loss. Kinda joking there.

C

I pinch mostly…it just comes natural to me.  every once in awhile i boxcar or sniff off the back of the hand but with most snuffs i pinch except for Otto Shcmalzler and Taxi Blue which i just unceremoniously stuff up my nose.

I

My preference is for the pinch. I have the most control and get the best aroma that way, plus I can do it without any thought. But my bulk snuffs are kept in vials, so I end up using the back of my hand a fair amount. I’d eventually like to learn the art of the spoon though… would be nice to avoid the finger cleaning after every pinch when reading a book, typing, etc.

J

This spoon thing caught my attention. I think it would serve well dealing with very fine snuff. I started with most popular Poshl products, so the tapboxes were my go-to for many years. Sometimes they clogged and there was too much, too little or none snuff on my hand. Especially if it was windy outside and I could see my portion flying away… However, after I discovered all the fancy tins of tabaka, realised theres nothing better than a good ol’ pinch of it. You can stuff your nose, sniff it slowly for a few minutes or enjoy mangling it with your fingers… Be it coarse or fine grind, pinching always works for me.

G

It’s excellent for moist snuff.  No way would i attempt to finger it.  I’d probably overdo it

A

I pinch all snuffs. The finer the grind the more I enjoy them from the back of the hand.

B

I like using a spoon…it gives me the best portion control. I also enjoy tapping some out on the back of my hand. It Is usually a pretty quick option. As a newbie, I have no idea what a boxcar is. Lol!

S

@Ben_MacM Box car is where you wrap your index finger around the end of your thumb and place the snuff on your thumb nail. I either pinch or use this method.

B

That sounds pretty cool. It seems like it would be a rather large portion…but hey, anything is worth a shot at least once. Thanks @Slide for the explanation.

V

@Ben_MacM An illustration of boxcar: http://www.modernsnuff.com/technique/index.html#boxcar

Preparing boxcar load, you can pour as much snuff as you like. Pretty much no limits there!

B

That was a great rundown of the different snuff taking methods. Thank-you @volunge for sharing that link…most kind. I have taken to the spoon method primarily. I feel I can control the portion size best. I prefer 2-3 small sniffs in each nostril over one big one each. I find I also get less going to the back of my throat…which is something I’m not a big fan of. Thanks again gang for the on-going education process…this is great!

H

The tongue cluck method improved my experience greatly. I’ve always been a pincher and a proponent of moist and coarse snuffs because they stay where they are supposed to stay, but now I know that a short, sharp inhalation is not always one’s friend. As a plus, I can be content with far less use as none is wasted. So, short answer is pinch, but it’s too late for that.

S

@Ben_MacM I use box car when I am using turn tins or snuff boxes with a sliding dispenser. You can somewhat control the amount that comes out. However, sometimes the Snuff Gods do challenge you!

S

Pinch to back of the hand and gentle sniff. With snuff, little and often works best for me.

G

I’m not far into snuff taking, but I already know this.  I won’t ever use another method besides spoon because I don’t want to waste any

Maybe that won’t apply once I’ve tried W.E. Garrett; a dry scotch snuff.  I’m used to English snuff, which is moist and coarse.  This snuff is like touching baby powder.  Just why?  Why even attempt it?

Maybe my skin is oilier than most people.  I just wouldn’t trust it

A

@Gormur you don’t have any snuff fall out/on your shirt when you spoon? What types of snuff are you spooning? I tried and never warmed up to spooning because I found it too messy

G

@ar47 Good point.  Sometimes the dry snuff falls everywhere if I get ambitious with the amount I scoop up.  Moist snuff doesn’t ever do this to me though

I mainly use moist English snuff like Samuel Gawith or McChrystal’s

I just use a salt spoon.  It seems sized right for me, but everybody’s different

J

surprisingly i make way less mess with a spoon and sometimes more control though i do use the pinch equally give or take a few pinches. cant seem to choose between the two. i get better nic intake with a spoon but more relaxation and sent with a pinch. i really get theatrical with the pinch it really seems to help the enjoyment when you have a bit of flair about it

P

Wilsons of Sharrow best sp this morning. Aloha

A

@prattman69 thats not Whats In Your Nose thread but anyway cheers

S

It’s been a few years since I’ve used snuff; I am awaiting my order to start again. I like either the anatomical snuff box, or the boxcar method. With the boxcar method, I put my fingers practically up to my nose so that when I draw in it creates eddies and prevents the snuff from going straight up. With this method I can use decent amounts and not get the snuff into my sinuses. I think creating the vortex is key with the boxcar method.

S

I usually use a snuff paddle that I make myself out of kebab skewers lol. I just use a knife and whittle it into two flat sides on both ends after I’ve cut it so its only a few inches long. I like doing this best because they work great and they are extremely cheap but also because I loose them quite often and its annoying to have to keep ordering snuff spoons online when I eventually loose them.

Thats my go to method but sometimes just because I’m out and about I will use a tap box and put it on my knuckle and snort it the German way.

I rarely do the pinch method but sometimes I just like to switch things up but my problem with the pinch is that when I’m using medicated snuffs I will get a sore nose on the outside tip from the contact of the menthol and such.

Other than that, I do use bullets sometimes for ease and to be discreet in public places. I would like to get that x-box snuff dispenser that shoots it into both nostrils if it ever comes back in stock. It seems like it would be great and a quick easy method for both nostrils at once. I hope its restocked soon because I’ll definitely buy 2.

P

I feel the same about the eddies with the boxcar. i have to use it with American or it is in my lungs.

S

Boxcar mostly, I do use the pinch for toasts and anything with a finer grind (weaponized as I like to refer to them lol).

S

Pinch for me. I blow my head off most of the time the other ways.

G

Welcome to this group!

I go for the boxcar. It’s neat and tidy, otherwise the pinch. I find the back of the hand or anatomical snuffbox too messy on my face. Lol.

Best wishes,

Graeme

C

Always a pinch. I’ve tried other ways but this is the only way I can control how much I take and how I take it.

D

Mostly pinch, depending on the box it came in. Bernards get the boxcar, tap boxes…

A

Tap works best for me

S

I pinch fine and dry snuffs and boxcar moist and coarse snuffs.

Mostly only pinch at home and have gotten into the habit of only taking Poschl tap tins when I am out and about, keeps the mess in my car down quite a bit and I have less issues with snuff getting all over me. I certainly am messy when it comes to fine and dry snuff…

N

Pinch and plug with fine powders. Right hand for the right nostril, left hand for the left nostril. Boxcar for anything else. I did get the xbox dispenser, and I’ve tried it out a bit. It actually works pretty well for me, but the portions are smaller than I prefer, so I lose interest. I was thinking about taking out the sliding insert and filing out the holes to make them larger. It’s actually really convenient when I’m driving or in public. We’ll see if I ever get around to it.

N

Started with spoon ended with pinch not a fan of tap
