I have noticed this with a couple of snuffs recently, but not really paid attention to it till this evening. If I take a modest pinch of F&T Morocco, I get predominantly geranium with an orangey background, and very little spice. With a larger pinch, I get a big whoosh of spice first and foremost before the orange comes through, and it settles to a balanced orange and geranium, but the spice is still there, lurking round the edges. Can anyone explain to me how the same snuff can present it’s scent differently based on the size of the pinch? This isn’t the first complex scented snuff I have noticed this with
@50ft_trad I understand what you’re talking about, but certainly have no answers. I still find it amazing how certain snuff presents differently in the nose when instead of using a boxcar, I instead take a pinch and give it that brief moment of warming between the fingers, but I understand why THAT happens.
The first pinches i had was with ozona english menthol type i felt menthol first and then a strong brown tobacco scent. It has been a week and when i take it i only scent the mint and struggling to get the tobacco scent but not as strong as the first time. Maybe our nose just get used to a scent and then it s still there but we do not feel it. When i vape one liquid at the begining it feels good and after a long period i don t taste its taste anymore our system get used to it. As i still take small pinches i only get the mint scent mainly if i take a big one i get the brown tobacco scent but i can t help sneezing lol. Regarding the president snuff i took it outside it was windy and i felt its tobacco scent. When i took it indoor i felt more the citrus and eucalyptus thing.
I get this too. Probably has to do with the composition of olfactory sensory neurons you have and slight differences in the distribution of the odorant molecules when you take a large pinch. Perhaps in a large pinch, the odorant molecules tend to hit a concentrated patch of olfactory sensory neurons with the particular receptor protein for “orange-geranium-type” odorant molecules. Its very interesting. But its just what i recall from the one physiology class i took in college 20 years ago, so maybe thats not very reliable.
Hmmm… I’m not medically or scientifically trained in any way, but to this layman your explanation sounds like an accidental outcome rather than a repeatable one. Thanks for the input all the same though. Nice to know it’s not just me who gets different scents for different sized pinches
Yeah, idk either. Im not qualified to make any medical conclusions…my background is accounting ; ) I know when i take a big pinch, there would be more dust on the tips of my fingers that would fly off into areas of my nose that wouldnt usually get coated with a smaller pinch.and maybe in that area of your nose, there are many of these particular receptors that wouldnt usually activate. In any case, i like that about snuff: the subtlties that you become acutely aware of!
“composition of olfactory sensory neurons - differences in the distribution of the odorant molecules - hit a concentrated patch of olfactory sensory neurons - particular receptor protein for “orange-geranium-type” odorant molecules”
Sounds like dialog out of a Star Trek episode! :))
I just re-read what i wrote. Omg, that does sound weird!! Ah, well, “Beam me up, Scotty”. @-)
Size doesn’t matter, its how you use it. =))
