Pinch From Tap Box?

Anyone else weird like me? Tins are nice, but I always spill with them, especially McChrystals tins, plus if you’re outside where it’s windy you’re losing more than you’re pinching half the time!

I like using a tap box and tapping the snuff into my palm in a small mound, then pinching that up. Anyone else do this?

Tap boxes containing snuff are a very risky purchase with water-based products as the contents frequently become dried out and stale. In the past I’ve been gifted tap boxes bought from English manufacturers and thrown them away, contents and all as the quality has been so poor - especially with coarse and moist snuffs that are reduced to shotgun pellets. In my experience nothing can beat fresh 250 or 500 gram canisters (particularly if bought direct from the manufacturer) as the difference in quality is abundant. It’s better to buy a reusable box from which you can tap out snuff but fill it from a fresh supply. Some custom made snuffboxes come with both a lid and a side dispenser. Is this what you are using?

I have quite a few cheap plastic snuffboxes with side dispensers, the ‘De Lilie en de Ster’ type. Anything I get in a small tin or tap tin goes straight into them.

Drying out isn’t such a big issue for schmalzlers so I leave them in the tap boxes and they seem to do OK. A sealed tub is always the best though.

Back to @BarlimanButtersnuff 's question: there are times I do similar but not from my palm. My fingers are quite thick so small tins can be a struggle. If I stretch out my fingers the depression over my knuckles works well to hold snuff, which I either pinch or snuff directly. It works better for me than boxcaring it. Usually though I pinch directly from the snuffbox or a larger tin.

Goodness, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything quite so minute as that. I doubt my fingers could reach inside and if so would probably empty the box after an hour.
Since accidentally breaking my prized wood and metal box made in Saint-Claude bought in Paris and shattered decades later in Marrakesh I’m loath to risk other boxes either through damage or loss. If away for a few days I now journey with these cheap and good-sized boxes (picture enclosed) that are both hinged and have a side dispenser for tapping. Similar examples are doubtless available and they won’t break your heart if damaged.

They look good. Where did you get them?

@cjm They aren’t identical, but Mr. Snuff has essentially the same snuff boxes on their site:

@Rajprabu Interesting. How much snuff does that carry, and how fresh does it stay in there?

Goodness, I’m imagining bringing that to the airport, they’d think I was carrying a pipe bomb!

@Rajprabu huh, how cool. I’m guessing you meant 15 grams? Is it large enough to pinch from or do you tap some onto your hand? Or sniff straight from the tin?

I bought several from Simon Jackson some years ago now, but he doesn’t stock them anymore. He does, however, have smaller Saint-Claude hinged boxes which will last a lifetime if opened correctly (so as not to damage the hinge) or dropped on a hard surface. I expect many here have one or more of these boxes. Unfortunately he doesn’t have any metal ended ones.

Another popular box which many here will possess are those made by Michael Fisher of Heartwood Creations in Illinois (not the magnetic effort). The sliding lid is a good tight fit and is snuff-proof. For me, this is the minimum size for a snuffbox and when filled will last me a day.

Apologies in advance if you already possess any of these popular boxes.

Blimey! I get through a good 5.5 grams of snuff a day a day.

I hate tapboxes, especially the 5gr round Toque and F&T contraptions. I usually don’t buy that small but I have when I sampled out the F&T lineup and Toque USA lineup. I simply break them open and decant into 10g tins that I bought off Amazon. Problem solved.

I boxcar off of tap tins or cut them open with aviation shears and repackage.

Nothing like a thumbnail worth of my usernamesake. I can watch an entire movie and never grab my hanky.
