I was delighted today to receive a small package from Pieter. Inside was a beautiful snuff tin, inscribed with a very attractive script. The snuff inside is KarooStof- apparently blended by Pieter himself. After a chat with the good man, it transpires that Pieter is indeed the creator of this snuff. I received permission to write a review and it is with great pleasure that I do so. Claassen’s KarooStof ************************* Before I knew that this snuff was home produced, I firmly believed that I was dealing with a commercially produced product. The snuff is a rich dark brown of medium moisture with a pleasant nicotine hit. The first flavour that one receives is akin to J and H Wilsons medicated 99 i.e. a smooth camphor like flavour. However this is far more complex and after the initial aroma, one starts to get smokey, dark notes that are redolent of good cigars, cognac and wood smoke. This is such a smooth well produced snuff that I can not believe it’s not in a Wilsons of Sharrow tin! I’ve tried several home produced snuffs-some of them very good- but this is simply on another plane. My only problem is that I can not order a couple of pounds of this delectable snuff on line! I know that a few other people have received tins and I would be very interested to hear about their impressions.
snuffster, I too received a tin (see the “What’s In Your Mailbox” thread). I just can’t add any-more to your review. I’m so overwhelmed with the snuff, and the personalised tin it came in.
Yes, pretty outstanding stuff John.
I was sworn to secrecy on this project, but I knew it was in the works. I’m glad to know Pieter has perfected his recipe now. Pieter, you are a true gentleman.
I expect some will be on route to you Xander. I suppose technically the mill is demi-gros, but it feels like silk. The flavour and overall composition are simply outstanding. The home mades’ that I’ve tried in the past have all had something about them that needed to be improved on in some way - in effect they were like tasting reasonably good home brewed beer or wine; there is always a ‘home made’ element somewhere. But Pieter’s snuff is quite simply as good as anything made by any of the prominent companies. If Roderick produced this we would not bat an eyelid and congratulate him on another fine snuff. Really, this is the besy way to praise this snuff.
I received a tin of Karoostof in it’s engraved tin a few months ago and was also sworn to secrecy - I’m not sure if Pieter has tinkered with his recipe, but I can only concur with everyone else’s opinion. It is a wonderfully crafted snuff, seriously good stuff. Or stof.
I concur. EXCELLENT! Nice tin too!
I should have posted it here, but my own first impressions just went onto Roderick’s thread. I think I’m going to hit this one pretty heavily tonight and really get to know it.
Well if this goes into production I’ll certainly give it a whirl. Especialy since it passes the I could passes this off as store bought, especialy since I know excately what you mean. Congrats Pieter.
Well, just had a pinch out of the engraved tin: lovely, old fashioned, mature, lifting, slight burning, nice odour, whooho. Thank you very much Pieter!
Blimey, I wish I could still use snuff! It sounds like heaven.
