Why do so many Indian companies name themselves after a number of photos? I tried searching but came up with nothing. I saw it’s a swami, but beyond that… Why?
It’s been discussed many times and the gist of it is: There is a large portion of the Indian population that are illiterate. In order to purchase the snuff of their choice they will refer to the number of pictures, or photos on the snuff container rather than asking it by name.
I was curious about this, so I just googled “literacy rate” + India and came up with a wikipedia article (usual disclaimers). It says that the literacy rate in India is around 75% (82.14% for men and 65.46% for women), compared to a global average of 84%. That’s up from 12% at Independence in 1947. Because you get a lag between improving education and improving literacy rates (because the oldies don’t usually learn), people always look at the youth rate (14-25), which is above 90%. Because it’s got such a large population, it still has more illiterate people than any other country.
Hmm. Indonesia is on an average rate of 92%, which puts it above the global average.
Sorry, I’m a development sector geek, so this kind of stuff is interesting to me:
That makes sense thanks guys.
