Perfumed snuffs

As far as British snuffs go, I think I like the perfumed types the best. Please correct me if I am wrong. I recently aquired some Samuel Gawith Mimosa, and Cuckoo, and I really like these. Are these Perfumed? I also used to have a WoS Strasbourg and I recall liking that a lot, and I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of it, as now I want it again, was that a Perfumed type? What are the Perfumed types? I am contemplating making an order. This is what I have so far in my list: Gawith Hoggarth: Jockey Club Sea Breezes Western Glory Wallflower Fredrick Tranter: Cotswold Finisterrer Wilsons of Sharrow: Strasbourg I may have misspelled some things, but aside from helping me make a new order, this post could also be a list of Perfumed type snuffs others could use for reference. Thanks.

Yes, I’d consider Strasbourg a perfumed snuff. My fiance loves that snuff it’s in her snuffbox right now  I like F&T Morocco mmmmm *pinch*

The only one I can speak on with experience is the Strasbourg…it’s a wonderful lightly floral perfumed snuff…a little more coarsely ground than most of the florals i have…it’s a REALLY nice snuff IMHO! I guess I would consider it a floral SP? Correct me if I’m wrong, somebody…just my .02! =)

IMO Gawith Hoggarth Jockey Club is terrible. I am a big fan of Wilsons of Sharrow Jockey Club.

OK, so IF I was going to make an order of let’s say 10 perfumed snuffs, what is the recommendation? A top 10, I guess, of perfumed snuffs.

Many of the F&Ts are highly respected. Seville, Morlaix, Bordeaux are the most perfumy I guess.

I have to agree with Xander. If you want quality perfumed snuffs, F&T is the brand to check out. Knowing your love of Indian snuffs, Tom, French Carotte may be to your liking – it’s primary scenting ingredient is sandalwood. You may like the new Patchouli as well, but since I haven’t tried it yet, I can’t really recommend it.

French Carotte - the Fribourg & Treyer variety, without hesitation! Best Jockey Club I have yet tried, by a significant margin, is Wilsons of Sharrow; For Rose scented: plain rose would have to be Wilsons again; for a more complex perfume with attar of roses as a sound base, Fribourg & Treyer’s Macouba is just divine. For a lighter scent of Champagne and oranges, I am starting to seriously appreciate Snuff Store’s Bucks Fizz, of which I have just today opened a new tin. Also from Snuff Store, Golden Pinch is a must try - again, more subtle than the first few I mentioned; based on a good quality SP with some subtle yet skilfully blended and complex perfumes, this bears a good likeness to G Smith’s Golden Cardinal. A permanent member of the selection on my desk! Wilson’s Morlaix is a scented SP of which I am fond, and is an excellent blending snuff; I have a tube of Fribourg’s Morlaix waiting in the wings! [This promises to be good - it’s half of the recipe for F&T’s Dr J Robertson Justice - one of my perennial favourites]. When I lived in London [30 years ago] I enjoyed G Smith’s Otterburn [back in those days it still came in little glass jars] - I am told Samuel Gawith’s Otterhound is remarkably similar. Something like the aroma of a tasteful edwardian lady’s talcum powder, perhaps. I have tubes of F&T’s two recently re-introduced blends: Bureau and Patchouli waiting to be tried [also in today’s delivery!]

For heavier, “Christmassy” perfumes - based on excellent black rappee, try Fribourg & Treyer’s Bordeaux or Wilsons of Sharrow’s Burgundy. [You’ll find quite a lengthy, detailed review and comparison of these on Snuff Store’s Web site - cross-posted to both blends.]

I personally hate perfumed snuffs with a passion but if you like them i just tried a Kendall Dry Orange that drove my sinuses crazy. It was very strong with the perfume smell so perfume fans might enjoy, just thought i’d mention it.

Tom, Also add to your perfumed Gawith Hoggarth list a few that have something of an Indian vibe: Ambassador Lakeland Mitchells Not sure I’d call Sea Breezes perfumed. Its more like a medicated/herbal. It has no menthol, but a bit of wintergreen which has a medicinal quality. Make sure you get them in mini tubs instead of sneeze boxes or you will hate them. Really this list could be endless if your counting all florals as well.

How would you rank WoS Royal George?

I would swap the sea breezes for M4X from GH, I think you will appreciate it given your liking for Indian snuffs. Its like a lightly mentholated forest glade, on a warm spring day after the rain.

It’s about time you started snuffing you tobacco sucker! Remember your tastes will change so don’t go too far into florals.

I didn’t want to include plain specific florals, but just perfumed, some may have floral mixes.

With your fondness of Indian snuffs, I’m not sure whether or not the coarseness of the Strasbourg would be to your lilking, but as a perfume/floral it’s a great one to try since it’s not “knock ya down” perfumed…I would highly recommend you put it on your list as a ‘starter’ perfume as it’s subtle. I haven’t had the F&T version, but I really enjoy the WoS French Carotte, so I’d definitely put one of those on your list as well. I’m just getting into the perfumed snuffs as well, so I hope you post a Tom502 Perfumed Snuff Review thread when you’ve had a chance to get your nose in em!!

I used to have Strasbourg a while back, and I liked it, and for some reason I exchanged it off. I do like the S. Gawith Mimosa and Cuckoo that I have, they remind me of a Wilsons I used to have, and I think it was Strasbourg, but I’m not sure.

What sets Strasbourg apart is citron and nutmeg, these combine into a very interesting blend.

I’m pretty sure it has violet in it as well.

Don’t care for girly snuffs myself.
