Particular Oxford snuff

Another mate, who really likes snuff, gets his from somewhere in Oxford that apparently only supplies to the town and university. Does anyone know what brand it is?

Fredrick Tranter’s probably - they had a shop in Oxford but the snuff was contract manufactured by Wilsons of Sharrow and I believe the Tranter’s brand was discontinued recently - likely through insufficient demand to warrant continuing with it. If you find the name of the snuff you would probably be able to obtain it from Wilson’s under their own label. Some contract brands are simply re-labelled for the client. There is no snuff company that supplies only to the university/town of Oxford, that’s just a bit of embellishment to the story  - their contract made snuffs have been available by mail order for years as well as online and in their other shops. Actually they were based in Bath for most of their history. I’m not sure of their current trading status. Tranter’s stores were kiosk sized little shops more aimed at pipes and cigars.

It has to be from Tranter’s - that’s the only proper tobacconist left in Oxford.

There was a snuff called “Oxford” sold by one of the tobacconists in Oxford. But that was in the XIX century, so no…it’s not that.

I couldn’t resist to add a curiosity.

The shop in Bath is still up and running, but it was closed for the Jubilee the day I visited.  A thousand curses…

Many thanks. I guess this was another one of his somewhat less than accurate yarns. Chuckle.
