Paraffin as a moisturizer?

Stumbled onto this. http://www.endsmoking.org.nz/nasalsnuff.htm 11% paraffin as a moisturizer? Maybe the names are different. Isn’t that candle wax a by product of petroleum refining. edit: kant spel

Yes. All mineral oils are a product of petroleum. Some are classed as food grade and therefore safe to use in snuff. Most German snuffs use one or another type of mineral oil, including food grade paraffin.

Quite common in sweets, choccy and other things.

Yes paraffin is the staple ingredient used as moisturizer in all Indian snuffs. Earlier ,I’m told that desi ghee was predominantly used but not anymore

As I understand it, this is not used in English snuffs, where it is unlawful in old laws on production and would be considered to be an ‘adulterant’. I’m not sure this would necessarily be observed to the letter these days, but am not aware of any UK snuffs which are greased. Perhaps someone knows otherwise?

I personally would be in favour of a requirement to list ingredients in the same way that this is a requirement for foodstuffs. It seems anachronistic that this is not the case This would be resisted in ye olde worlde of snuffs and traditional tobaccos where recipes are secrets. I would like to see this on a packet of cigs for example. What exactly is in those things? I wonder if other snuffhousers would like to see ingredients listed like this?

We at six photo have listed all our ingredients on all our packs

I know scmaltzlers are absolutely awesome mixed with clarified butter, or especially bacon grease that’s been strained. I have some other that use paraffin as far as I know but the real grease is much better.

Schmalzlers used to be made with lard, but in this day of modern marketing and long shelf lives that would not work so they use paraffin oil. You can buy “unfatted” schmalzlers and mix it with your own lard or clarified butter.

Roderick, Wouldn’t you resist listing the recipe for Spanish Gem for example? I’m just taking a pinch now, very nice…but what exactly is there?

Ah yes. and it wouldn’t be fair to ask you the ingredients without requiring the others to list theirs.
