Not naming names but I dropped into my local tobacconist today. I have a substantial stock of Toque to see me through the next few months but thought I’d see what they had to offer. A small selection of poschl all priced at £2.99 each! Best of it is I checked their website when I got home and they are selling it for £1.70 mail order. Won’t be going back there.
I imagine the £1.70 ends up being £3.00 after shipping and handling is added?
If you mean the newsagents website the large pricing difference is odd. But if you mean Porschl, getting it from the manufacturer is bypassing one level of additional profit added into the price, though they’re undoubtedly selling it to you for more than the wholesale price. The store will have incurred costs getting it to the premises, then has to add in factors such as heating the place, staff wages, the fact that it’ll most likely be a slow selling product using space that could be employed to house something more popular, etc.
Maybe they order from the same people as you do.
Sorry I wasn’t very clear. The shop is a specialist tobacconist who also run their own website. The price in the shop was nearly double what they themselves are selling it for online. I guess by the limited stock that they don’t sell a lot but this difference in price does still seem odd.
Have you queried this price discrepancy with them. What have you to lose by asking?
My Mother told me you’d better shop around
Tobacconist has to pay rent with their tobacco.
Poschl’s products here in Bulgaria are either €1.4 or €2.2, depending on the tobacconist. Funnily, the flashier - the cheaper…
In Spain, tobacco legislation unifies prices across tobacconists, and such prices can be read online. Everyone would know if they’re getting ripped off, and it would be illegal. Some advantages of having had a tobacco monopoly! (I think the recommended prices are 1.5 for Pöschl’s 10 gr. and 55 cents for a small McChrystal’s tin. Yeah, variety is the downside.)

Tobacco pricing is the same here in Japan- its the same price wise no matter where you go. This is one thing I appreciated about my last stateside trip in that I could shop around if I was in the mood to do some research and driving. For what its worth- a 5 gram box of Silver Dollar ran me $4.99 + California taxes a few weeks ago when I was in the states. While I had planned ahead and ordered from Mr. Snuff to ensure I had a supply on-hand and made a subsequent order while there for nearly six weeks, I was out and wanted some Silver Dollar Original- which cost me about the same had I ordered it directly from the manufacturer.
