Overall dryness

Today I am totally confused. I have received Wilsons Lime & Lemon, Best SP (1. shop) and S. Gawith Cherry (2. shop). I am not an experienced snuffer, know Poeschl’s Red Bull and Apricot only. These new are SO MUCH different experience in all three cases that I am in doubts about both of sellers or myself. I have read that UK snuffs are different (powdery) and anyone needs more experiences for using them… Is it true? I am trying to snuff SO gently but they still make me cough. In reviews I see Best SP is typically of medium moisture and grind. Can’t imagine how it could be dry or grinded more  then the mine. Who knows, maybe I am more into mint and rough pieces…

Hi @Welblaud! Welcome to the Snuffhouse! This old thread might be of a little help. http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/56609/#Comment\_56609 Welcome to the wonderful world of Snuff!

Thanks, it really seems it just need a time.

@Welblaud yes indeed the UK snuffs are entirely different experience. They are supposed to be like powder. Reviews are relative to other snuffs of the same style, usually. Believe it or not, there are even finer and dryer snuffs out there than those few. There is a huge variety of snuff out there, and its best to try different ones from different makers for the most variety. I’d be wary of the Samuel Gawith one though since I suspect it was purchased in a tap box which sat on the shop shelf for awhile. Those are notorious for drying out snuff rapidly.

If these tap boxes were shrink rapped after filling ,that would let the snuff survive till you open it. If you think UK snuffs are dry and powdery wait till you try the american scotches. And D White will blow your mind along with other Dholakia products. Enjoy the Journey

Ok, thanks a lot. I’ll try those Wilsons carefully and patiently

I think it was @Dogwalla on here who taught me a good technique. Take a deep breath so your lungs are full and close your mouth. Then bring a pinch to your nose and slowly part your teeth while keeping your lips sealed. This will create a perfect light vacuum so you can take the snuff without it hitting your throat and lungs. Though scotches and D White and whatnot will still make you cough but it won’t be as bad.

I am trying the “rabbit technique” and it helps a lot!

so, which is better, the dryer or hanging them on the line outside and letting the wind and sun do the drying?

Your question needs a separate thread, this one I have started just due to my shock

Yes, it’s important to know - dry overalls are a must. As for snuff, it’s possible you’re feeling the difference between water moistened snuffs and oil snuffs - the Porschl snuffs are moistened with oil, so they feel different in the nose to UK ones. That said, UK snuffs vary greatly in dryness, something like WoS Best Dark or Brunswick is quite moist, and SG Black Rappee is like trying to get soil to stay up your schnoz. (But worth the effort!) If they seem every dry you can moisten them a bit with a drop of water stirred in, but don;t use tap water. I use the stuff my dehumidifier draws from the air.

I find the Porschl snuffs excellent personally. I use the cherry, orange, spearmint (not keen on the raspberry), as well as Red bull. The snuffs I have bought seem to have had consistent moistness (I only buy from a local tobacconist and know the stock is refreshed regularly). I find these ‘oily’ snuffs behave so well in my nose, and the tap boxes don’t let me down. The small nature of the Porschl round tins means that the contents are used up relatively soon, which can then be replaced with fresh.
