OT why do mild grain alcohols make me happy?

be it beer or mild, muddy rice wines ( a good korean makkeolli is a fine example), they all make me happy. i do not get this effect from high volume alcohols, but even among those whisky and similiar grain alcohols are best. i do not like to be really drunk. but a few beers or a bottle or two of rice wine make me feel very snug, happy and satisfied. why is that? what makes my body chemistry react so different to these types of alcohol? ps: to make it less OT, lets recommend snuffs to go with this kind of liquor. i am for schmalzlers.

I have no idea why that is…rice wine is foul! I reckon Baileys would go well with Toque Chocolate

what kind of rice wine are you thinking about? i am talking about cloudy, mellow 4 % vol. mild and pure pleasure with a slight taste of oatmeal and a refreshing, light sour note. sometimes i like the “burned rice” variety, which has a distinct nutty taste.

I’m not a big rice wine drinker, being only slightly familiar with Saki, but I would say a good Saki, warmed and served in elegant porcelain would complement a Latakia based snuff or something like Cafe Royale. My personal choice at the moment would be a good, rich claret with Toque vanilla or natural. I know what you mean about the lower strength drinks having a more profound effect, certainly when they are warmed they are taken into the blood stream more rapidly.

I saw a news report a while back that certain bars in the UK serve vaporized alcohol. They apparently heat it up at a certain temperature so it turns into vapor, then a person will inhale it. I am pretty sure it was in the UK but it could have been in a different country. The news report was warning people how bad it is because you don’t know how much your consuming and it is really easy to get to drunk. I could imagine some alcohol poisoning happening from this.

LOL! I get to inhale all the alcohol vapour I want for free during the harvest. WE’ve got tanks fermenting all over the place. You walk into the room and WHAM… Co2 and alc smack you in the head. STONED, DRUNK, DRONED, what ever… AS for a pairing for a low level alc drink hmmmmm. Disarono,( only 28%… that;s pretty low for me.) served over ice with my homemade Solani Virgina/Perique snuff. Or, let’s say a pint of Leffe, with Toque original? …nightcap

“Or, let’s say a pint of Leffe, with Toque original?” Now you’re talking

Too bad It’s not on tap within a 90km radius of where I am now.

hmmm… the rice win i was talking about is very unlike sake. in fact it resembles wheat bier (“weizen”) in taste and feel. sake is not my cup of… …sake.

not sure I’ve tried it. name a couple brands and I’ll check the L.C.B.O the next time i’m in.

I agree…the cloudy stuff is very nice and sweet. I really like it (and it’s less expensive!) I, too, notice different affects from different types of alcohol. For example, Port wine makes me depressed. All wine in general makes me just tired. But, I drink more coffee than anything. I’ll take a pipe or snuff, coffee, music, and a good book or newspaper any day over T.V. with a beer.

what is l.c.b.o.? the most famous brand probably is “Seoul ‘su’ makkeoli”

sorry. the liquor store .

I don’t know what is the most famous, but I will take Hine ‘antique’ any day.

Well grain based brewed (over distilled) drinks have a lot carbs (relatively speaking) that are easy to digest and not as sugary as fruit based drinks. This should give you a more even up on the pleasure chemicals in the brain without the unpleasant and liver stressing simple sugars. I would strongly suggest trying good old fashioned hot buttered rum since it works on the same princible but with a few more factors like cholesterol sugar and equal parts straight water to alchool ratio making it a relativly hydrating alchoolic drink. Oh and drinking alchool that is hot tea temp gives a wonderfull warm and fuzz feeling all over which should make chilly nights into wonderfully balmy affairs.

Spot on Bob/I make mulled wine: Red wine Sliced Oranges Cinamon Honey A big slug of rum or whisky You are right, served at tea temperature it does give a great fuzzy feeling and certainly warms you up.

You might like Pruno, good ol’ prison wine.

hmm… what is buttered rum? i like to have a generous shoot of whiskey in my black tea on some winter days. and it makes me sleepy in a nice sort of way.

betonente, here is the recipe I use for hot buttered rum. I make a big batch of mix then freeze it and use throughout the winter season. 1 lb. butter softened 1 lb. brown sugar 1 lb. powdered sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. cloves 1 pnt. vanilla ice cream softened. Mix all together. This is your mix and can be frozen up to 1 year. This recipe makes a lot of mix which is good if you have company. Heat water in a mug, add 1-2 shots of rum to your liking, add 1 spoonful of mix or more to your liking, (optional, add cool whip)

sounds interesting. might be to sweet for my taste, i will have to see. definetily sounds like something i should try… thank you very much.
