I know there’s a thread on here about favorite bevvies with your snuff. I’m an avid beer drinker, and love tasting different varieties of quality brews. Just interested in beer here…ales, porters, stouts, pilsners , lagers etc. If this goes nowhere, no biggie Snuffster can kill it whenever…just an idea.

M

Busch beer ha ha some toast and marmalade snuff watchin Rocky (pennsylvania’s greatest sports hero ! )

F

Ha…started the thread and forgot to comment!! Silly me! Tonight I’m alternating 2 ales by New Belgium Brewing Co. Fat Tire which is a full bodied, yet hoppy Amber Ale, and 2 Below, a bright hoppy winter ale with a bit of malty warmth to it. Really nice ales…a little pricey, but, hey it’s MB!

F

Nice mm…busch is one of my favorite CB beers…got a great flavor for the price! Along with the toastn marmalade(awesome snuff) and Rocky(awesome flick) Sounds like you got a nice evening ahead of ya!!

M

@fisch when I lived in colorado fat tire was huge…if im not mistaken its made in ft collins(northern co) also its a wind powered brewery. i used to hit up alot of brew pubs, hoppy beers pumped with nitrogen rather then Co2 …not sure if if i was able to tell a difference tho.

F

Wow…you are very correct sir!! I did not know it was wind powered…cool info! Yeah the whole nitrogen versus Co2 deal kinda bums me…i’m more partial to the brews that are naturally carbonated through the fermentation process. Not such a biting belly filling carb.

R

Tasted a hell of a lot of beers…still a die hard Budweiser guy after all was said and done… took a shine to St. Pauli for a while though. Regular and Dark are both pretty good.

F

@Rans…it’s a lil off the wall, but have you tried the Bud with Clamato? Add a dash of Texas Pete, and it’s like a Bloody Mary/Beer combo! I absolutely love it for a session beer!

R

@FischTix … I think the nitrogen is for pressurizing the keg so the beer doesn’t oxidize. Keeps it fresher. BTW if I said to you “Reba dipped a ladel for a taste of her creation…”, how would you respond?

M

@rdunnion …somethin somethin finest of her creation ? Im not a fan and u didnt ask me but i thought ide throw in my 2 cents. I did see em at red rocks one year. for sure wasnt my style.

F

and she knew what she had made would be the finest in the nation…man…i haven’t listened to Phish in ages!!! That was some good info unnion!! I was not aware of that…I love me some learnin’!

F

I used to be a huge jam band fan…still love some dead if the mood is right…and even though they’re more contemporary jam i looove DMB!! saw em in Charlotte…great show!! i envy u like hell for seeing any show at red rocks…would love to go there one day!

M

I am off to listen to some jazz this lunch time, and some Steaming Billy will be in pint glass!

K

Westons of Much Marcle’s Old Rosie Scrumpy Cider (I only ever drink Westons, I hardly even drink ale/beer any more!)

T

I had a couple of bottles of Whitstable Bay Ale the other day, and very nice they were too.

N

Smiths Brown Ale.

W

In my pint pot tonight will be Cornish beer. A nice session beer by the name of Dartmoor from St. Austell brewery. Not tried it yet but am looking forward to it. Stefan

F

@Walrus1985 I would love to here your take on that brew…the name sounds nice anyway.

F

Bud with Clamato for me 2nite…i just love this stuff!!

F

@Koba22…I love cider as well. Sadly, all I can find readily available is Woodchuck’s. It’s OK, just a little on the artificially sweet side for me!

B

Fuller’s ESB and Sierra Stout.

F

Love Bitters n Stouts! Sierra Nevada is some nice brew…I can rarely find anything except there Pale Ale where I live.

R

Bud here, will pick up some clamato this weekend and give it a shot!

F

Look in your local grocery stores and gas stations…it comes in tallboys already mixed…i just add a dash of Texas Pete for some spice…great stuff!

F

Hers’s a pic of what to look for

B

The Pale Ale is very nice too. If you like American stouts, look for Deschute’s Obsidian. It’s excellent, maybe a little heavier and sweeter than the Sierra.

F

I’ll have to look for that one brute…i love heavy stouts! My all time favorite is probably Rogue Oatmeal Stout…I got these whenever I could when i lived in Cali…came in a 22 oz bomber…would have loved to try off tap though.

R

OMG…clamato…you were serious. Thats like tomato and clam juice right?

F

yeah…gross is what i thought at first!!! I tried it and now i’m hooked…it’s my favorite, cheap session beer! It,s like drinkin V8 n gettin a buzz!!!

P

Woods Shropshire Lad. Top drawer ale!

M

@Tc2642, you make your own stout? I’m impressed. How do you, impartially, rate it?

J

Pee

F

LOL!!! The Urine Bandit strikes again!

F

A couple of pints…or as we call em in the states 12oz bottles…of Magic Hat Black as Night Winter Lager. really nice dark lager…hella malty!

F

@Tc2642 I’d have to say that some of the quality home brews I’ve had completely blow CB,s out of the water, and are even much better than micro brews. Your typical home brewer takes great pride in the quality of their work, and strive to produce a brew that they can give to others knowing that it will be appreciated. Nice to meet a man of the craft on here! I wish there were some decent home brewers around where I live!

W

@Fisch tried the Cornish ale last night and I’m very impressed. Malty and hoppy, very very good. And at only 3.9% it means you can have a couple of gallons, which I shall be later tonight. And only £2.30 a pint so impressed by that too. Stefan

F

@Walrus1985 Sounds delicious! With the low alcohol content it would definately make for great session ale! Thanks much for the review! @Tc2642 Thank you sir. I’m honored to hear that, and would definitely love to try your handcrafted goodness!!

W

My home brew Oatmeal stout+ some Gawith Hoggarth English Rose snuff + Internet Jazz (New Orleans)= Sublime! I am surfing suds, snuff, and sounds!

F

Damn Whalen is a Brewmeister too…that’s badass…love some oatmeal stout! Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Magic Hat Not Quite Pale Ale for me tonight!! Lip full o’ Cope longcut(just til the General gets here).

P

My pint glass is empty at the moment, which is very depressing. I could really go for a nice pint of Harp, or a Nut Brown Ale from a local microbrewery (it puts Newcastle to shame).

M

im drinking yuengling lager & vodka and eating delicious polish food. Viva POLONIA .

N

@Fischtix "A couple of pints…or as we call em in the states 12oz bottles…of Magic Hat Black as Night Winter Lager. really nice dark lager…hella malty! " Those would be a couple of halves. In England a pint is 20 oz.

X

A pint is 16 oz here.

F

I’ve yet to find an actual American pint in the bottle…just 12 oz, 20 oz bombers, n deuce deuces. Got pint cans tho.

B

Firestone’s Velvet Merlin. Despite the silly name, a wonderful Oatmeal Stout.

F

Holy CRAP!!! I haven’t had Firestone since I left California!!! My favorite was the Double Barrel Ale. From what I understand they bought the old SLO brewery on the south end of Paso Robles…they make a damn fine brew. I’m mixin it up 2nite…Fat Tire Amber, Sierra Nevada Pale, and Magic Hat Not Quite Pale. (not mixed together of course) The Fat Tire is the best by far!

B

+1 for the Double Barrel Ale It’s a shame that Firestone has such shoddy distribution. I used to be able to find most, though never all, of their brews when I was living in SF.

F

Got some Heineken in the 5 liter baby keg…pretty decent. It’s definitely better than from the bottle!

F

Got some Stella Artois goin on tonight…pretty decent gor mass produced Belgium lager.

K

Wife beater Stella?!? You can do better than that! I know its not a pint, but ive had some sherry

S

ERDINGER WEISSBRÄU.

K

@SnuffHead , did you have it in an Erdinger glass, the tall ones? Its a glorious beer.

F

@Koba22…I can do better…but not much! It’s slim pickins at the grocery stores in my town…and the only shop that we had strictly for beer closed due too lack of business. The wealthy that come from from family money and the nouveau riche in this lil southern town both prefer their fine wines. There’s not much of a market for quality brews. The closest store with a nice vatiety is about an hour away, and I just didn’t have the time or energy last night. It’s starting to look like it’s time to start brewing my own!

S

@ Koba, sure did. But there is Oranjeboom in there now.

K

@SnuffHead , good man, I’ve got a couple myself, they accidentally fell into my pockets when I was in an Austrian bar in Spain oddly enough…

F

Oranjeboom is delicious SnuffHead! The brew shop that we used to had carried it, an it was one of my favorites, along with Hoegaarden(sp).

Y

its not a pint, but I tried to drink Absinthe today. Took a sip from the bottle and it was everything I could do to get the vile stuff down. It finally gets legalized here in the US and its -that- ugh, I feel cheated. And they made me buy 2 bottles due to state law which was reasoned and I quote “You can drink a bottle of the stuff and it won’t turn up on a breathalyser. So you have to buy two.”

A

I would like to say Thwaites best bitter but its just about unheard of in London pubs, apart from that pretty much any decent draught beer.

W

In my pint glass tonight was Chestnut Mild. Tomorrow night it will be a real ale called Pride of Pendle, a brew from Lancashire. Stefan

F

@Yoru there’s an “art” to drinking absinthe…you don’t drink it straight from the bottle. You place an absinthe spoon on the rim of an absinthe glass, a sugar cube on the spoon, and slowly dribble the absinthe over the sugar cube ubtil the bulb on the glass is full and the sugar is disolved. Plus you have to be careful…several of the brands sold in the US aren’t real absinthe. Plus to add to all that, you really need to have a taste for it. And, whatever you do, no flame should be involved…that’s just theatrical BS!

J

That must be modern art because traditionally CHILLED WATER was dripped over sugar into the absinthe.

F

Hahaha…lying in bed last night I sat straight up remebering i had totally screwed up the instructions! Yes…the absinthe goes in first…to the top of the bulb, and chilled water is dribbled over the sugar cube until thesugar is dissolved! Gives it the white milky color and tones down the tatse of straight absinthe! At least somebody was paying attention!

Y

I did it basically the same way – but I did do the theatrical flame portion. Doesn’t much matter I don’t think since only a few drinks are actually changed by flame, 3oz iced water to 1oz asinthe That was after the straight sip. Served properly the stuff is ‘fine’. I sure as hell won’t be buying it again at those insane prices for something barely ‘fine’ but meh, to each their own. I’ll stick with a nice blackberry merlot any night.

F

I don’t blame ya…it’s insanely expensive…and I swear that “ya gotta buy 2 bottles” was a load o’ bollocks. Me thinks some greedy barstard was trying ta cheat ya outta some money!

R

Co-co-Nut Porter from Maui Brewery. Very hoppy, reasonably thick and very complex porter with just a hint of toasted coconut. One of my favorites. Pairing it with Dental Sweet straight from the tube.

J

Big Swell Here.

R

@Juxtaposer Ah, Lahaina!

F

You guys got some strong brews out there in Hawaii!!!

G

this is on the menu for tonight. Ninkasi Tricerahops,a fantastic super citrusy double IPA from Eugene OR, along with my lover spanish gem will end up switching to SP extra for that firey nic kick once i catch my slight buzz.

R

Always room for Guinness. Got a 4-pack waiting at home.

F

Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat

B

Red Chair IPA and Dead Guy Ale. The Dead Guy is something else.

F

Rogue was always my go to when I lived in California…their Shakespeare Stout was my favorite. Sadly, since moving back to the East Coast I can’t get them anymore, so I’ll have to live vicariously through the lucky few…any beer named for Jerry Garcia has to be good!!

R

Love the Rogue brews. Had Double Dead Guy on tap at this dive in Charleston when I was there this fall. I became an instant regular.

T

Last night, I drank Genessee Bock Beer. It was not bad.

S

@FischTix: If there happens to be a Whole Foods near you, you could probably get Rogue at it. Tonight, I’m having a few different ones. First up, and almost done, is the Blue Moon Spring Blonde. Next up is Nøgne Ø’s #100 Barley-Wine style Ale, which will be followed by either their Imperial Stout, their Red Horizon, or else Harvlestoun’s Ola Dubh 12 year.

F

@shikitohno The closest Whole Foods is about an hour and a half away…but that’s some great info! At least I know I’m not entirely out of luck…next time I’m there I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip bro!

S

Every one of them by me carries Rogue, from my regulars in NYC to the one up in Portland, ME. Plus they usually have a decent selection. http://www.beermenus.com/wholefoods-beer-room-bowery is where I went yesterday. I love that place now. I’m really starting to love the growlers you can get filled off tap.

F

Wow man…that’s what I call a beer selection!! I did a search with the store locator and SC has one in Chareston, so I’m gonna hit it up as soon as we can get away for a day…it’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive. I thought we had one closer, but that’s better than nothing…I really appreciate the info man, that was really cool of ya!!

F

Some B-day Shocktop Wheat…a pretty decent CB wheat by Michelob

S

Old Speckled Hen at the moment - earlier t’was Newcastle Brown Ale.

F

@Sloth God how i envy you Brits…they serve us pure swill here in the States…unless you wann pay through the nose, and mine is normally full of snuff! =)

B

water water. No booze cause my throat is unhappy. Though I thought the flaming the absinthe thing was just to burn the sugar kinda like with a creme bruele.

E

Just got off work and enjoying some St. Peters winter ale…cheers

F

Walgreen’s new House brand, Big Flats…lol!!! Not bad for $2.99 a sixer!

S

McEwans Export, nice (and cheap) Scottish ale.

F

@Sloth I love McEwans, but it sure ain’t cheap here!! Around $10 US a sixer at the few stores that carry…you Brits are so lucky when it comes to ale!!

H

Marstons Oyster Stout Butcombe Bitter Guinness Original Chimay Sneck Lifter are all in my fridge right now. But which one to crack open? Mmmmmm…beer!

F

Negra Modelo

S

Guiness Foreign Xtra @ 7.5%.

N

well it’s not in a pint glass but I’ve been drinking White Russians made with Finlandia since 3:00 and I’m quite buzzed right now. I like to call this drink “the dude” because if it wasn’t for The Big Lebowski I probably won’t even know it exists.

A

Ive just done half a bottle of vodka. Great drink vodka. When I went to Poland the restaurants had vodka menus. Poland and vodka, both very good things.

N

My best friend is Polish and at his house he has a ridiculous selection of vodka. He had this one rare Polish vodka that came in a locked leather case with crystal glasses and it was the smoothest liquor that I have ever had.

M

I too enjoy vodka…tonight it is Sobieski vodka. made with good ole polish rye

F

Some nice cheap Killian’s for me…Ya know us Micks be poor!!!

R

Scotch

J

At this point I’m not allowed to use glassware.

T

I just bought 2 giant plastic bottles of Baltika #9 Extra Lagar. Never had it before. http://greatbrewers.com/sites/default/files/images/Product%20-%20Baltika%20No.%209%20Extra.preview.jpg

W

A nice malty Welsh brew will be in my pint pot tonight. It is called Bread of Heaven. Lovely stuff. Stefan

W

Brewing a ten gallon batch of a Citra Pale ale tonite. The Citra hops are sexy , super clean citrus like note. A new world class hops IMHO. We have a porter and Belgian Blonde to bottle for the fishing boat. The Belgian Blonde came out so strong we renamed it the Belgian Tranny!

X

It must be Friday. This thread tends to surface every Friday.

G

sadly nothing is in my pint glass tonight

X

Mine neither, but I have half a mind to take my last $20 down to the liqour store and get something.

K

Henry Westons Special Vintage Reserve Cider (8.2%)…and I’ve had 3 so far along with most of a small tin of WoS Best SP…my eyes are taking a while to catch up with my face…

S

Woodchuck Amber Hard Cider! Get it in your mouth!

S

Samuel Adams Boston Larger.

N

Smiths Brown Ale.

Westons of Herefordshire Premium Organic Cider in my Westons Cider Half Pint Mug obsessive…me? But What’s in your pint Glass? edit: Ok…who edited my post???

A

Carlsberg lager brewed in Cork city.

S

Cain’s Dark Mild. My step dad promised me it’s a delicious drink, but I find it lacking.

D

in my pint poor mans black velvet made with guinness and magners irish cider 50/50 mix.

S

Cor blimey! That sounds like it’d sit heavy on your stomach…

D

nope the cider makes it a lot lighter than guinness on its own nice and eazey to drink best ice cold with a bbq food

W

Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer for me tonight. Stefan

S

Might have to give that a go some time soon then, @dazz34!

S

Having a pint of Long Trail Ale at the moment, along with some grand cairo. Probably throw some schmalzlers in the mix later when I move on to wheat beers and lagers.

B

water it’s too fucking hot for anything but water. Damn you heat and humidity.

J

I sheepishly confess I had a Bud Light today. Well…? I was grilling and no matter what, I always have to have a beer and a cigarette when I’m grilling. It happened to be the nearest thing in the basement fridge…

X

@Snuffhead: I hope you were not too bemused by Sam Adams’ most mediocre (yet ironcally most popular) offering. They are actually much better at ales and a few seasonal brews. When I got out of school in '95 I took the tradtional “go have some fun before life beigns” bike tour and found myself stopping at every brewpub, microbrewery and regional brewery between here and Nova Scotia. Most give tours and samples! Now, Boston took several days to get through, as they have a few places to visit. The Samuel Adams visit showed me they make some fantastic brews that don’t get too far beyond New England. They make a tripplebock that will knock your socks (and shoelaces) off. Anyway, if you want some of their better ones, and your source is lacking, LMK.

S

I totally agree with that Xander. I love Sam Adam’s Stock Ale but you have to hunt to find it around here. Broke down and drank a Foster’s Premium Ale. It tasted great but my stomach was not amused. I have a CT Scan next weekend at the VA so that might have been my last beer for a while.

S

@ Xander, I think the Sam Adams larger found it’s way this side of the pond because of 4th July (ermtony’s birthday) LOL! I found it quiet pleasing, dark for a larger. Much better then the Budweiser, Coors or other rubbish that comes out of Milwaukee. But for a good Larger drink, I much prefer Budweiser Budvar, The original Czech brewed nectar!

U

Dortmunder Kronen Export, but I fear nobody else will know it ;-))

S

@ Uwe want to bet? I lived in Leeds (West Yorkshire) in the late 70’s to the early 80’s Leeds is twinned with Dortmund due to the brewing industry. http://www.yorkshiredailyphoto.com/2009/09/drayman-statue-dortmund-square-leeds.html

U

@SnuffHead: That’s great. Yes, there were times when Dortmund has had serveral breweries. Unfortunately most of them where sold to big players like “Brau und Brunnen” or others, so that today there are only a few still operating. One of them is Kronen. I am somewhat enthusiastic that you know it… ;-)) So Cheers SnuffHead

B

I love Sam Adams black lager. It’s a strange beer but very pleasent.

S

PS to Xander Quote " if you want some of their better ones, and your source is lacking, LMK." Now that is a very kind offer, with respects I’ll decline until the day in the future when it can be sent over the Internet. Postage would be out of this world. But what a nice thought.

S

@ Uwe, sadly your story is the same as here. Tetley was the main brewer in Leeds. The company is now called Carlsberg UK.

S

If you ever get a chance to taste Sam Adams Lager fresh from the tap, it’s a totally different beer. Its one of the most well hopped beers I’ve had, almost a floral.

S

@ Spyro, strange, but I don’t like a heavy hopped beer. The Sam Adam was Ok, but I would’t drink it all the time, nor is it available all the time. Funnily We have a good brewery, Betemans just north of Boston in Lincolnshire UK The Real Boston! Their beer is are very heavy hopped, and to bitter for my pallet.

S

Rob, Transistor. Sorry, you can have milk in your pint glass. It was just the one worder, I thought you WTTP’s

O

Orange Juice. I’m now tee-total. (translation: recovering alcoholic).

S

I know what you mean SnuffHead, I don’t care for too much hops either. In fact, I’ve always been an advocate of reducing hops in most brews. My point was that outside of the bottle, Sam Adams is not a bitterly hopped beer. The hops are balanced just right giving a flowery scent to the hops without the bitter beer face. I’ve only found this to be so when it was fresh and from the tap tho. Some of the best beers just don’t bottle well between the uncontrolled storage conditions and preservatives.

B

Theakston’s Old Peculier (500ml bottles thereof). Other current favourites from the off-license include the very cheap Cain’s Dark Mild and Tetley Bitter Original (not the yucky ‘smoothflow’ cans). I’m actually a fan of the current trend towards insanely over-hopped beers. Brewdog 5AM Saint is one such tipple, so loaded with hops that it smells vaguely like marijuana!

S

I’m also one of those who likes more hopped or bitter beers. It’s one of the big reasons I avoid lagers, as most of them taste of nothing at all to me. Working my way through a Magic Hat variety box, with a bottle of #9 at the moment. All my pints make me a little disappointed now, as I finally got around to buying some glasses, and I purchased them at the one grocery store in NYC that seems to stock nothing but imperial pint glasses. Those extra few inches make me miss the larger pints I get when I buy certain British brews over here.

B

I wish we could get more American micro-brewed beers over here. There seems to be a misconception that all American beer is brewed by Anheuser Busch and served at 0.5 degrees above freezing in order to mask the taste. I know that this is not the case!

S

What taste are you talking about? With the big lagers, you may as well drop two shots of vodka in a litre of water, for all the taste you’ll get out of one of those brews. They’re some nice micro-brews here, but they probably don’t get exported too much simply because most people are happy enough with the big brewer’s products that they never demand anything better, and as niche products they’re already more expensive here, before you have to factor in shipping and duties. If you could get one large importer that could handle bringing over full lines from 5-8 breweries, and getting 30-40 beers out on the shelves, they might be able to make a decent profit off it. But if you’re just trying to bring over 1 or 2 brands, it’s probably not a large enough market.

P

DAM!! Sometimes I wish I could drink beer. For some reason I just never could get into the taste of it. I see so many people enjoying the ales and chatting about all the different varieties. I’m not much into alcohol at all…except maybe one foo foo drink when we go out to dinner but thats about it. When I was younger there was a fellow that worked for me that used to try all the exotic beers. Everytime he’d have one he would offer me a sip. I probably tried 1000 different brands. I was always hopeing that I could find one that would agree with me. I guess I’m destined to be without and simply stick to water. I am glad that most of you love your brew tho. cheerio!!

J

Ellie’s Brown Ale after having some Victory brand Golden Monkey - awesome beer and a hell of an alc content

W

For a nicely hopped IPA, you should try Jaipur, by Thornbridge Brewery, at Ashford-in-the-Water, nr Bakewell Derbys. It is my favourite beer and it won the best beer award of the UK, a couple of years ago. Bloody lovely stuff. Get it if you can! Stefan

B

Wickwar station porter

H

Pint glass??? I’ve got some Romana Sambuca on the rocks in a clear glass. Just quietly sipping and pondering the ouzo effect (watching my clear liquid turn a milky white) as the ice melts. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouzo\\_effect

S

I’m probably committing some cardinal sin here but… to me… beer is beer. Although I’m not one to drink the heavily hopped beers. I much prefer my Jack n Coke.

H

sigh… I pretty much gave up on beer once I could no longer get any Schmidt’s of Philadelphia (sacrelige for a Milwaukee boy like me!)

O

Well it’s not in my glass anymore because I drank it all haha, but I had some Sam Adams Octoberfest seasonal beer and it was yummy.

A

New Smithwick’s Pale Ale. This is pretty good and I heard Smithwick’s might brew an IPA too. This is progress, we are pretty f**ked up here in Ireland but at least beers are getting better!

W

Seen as my local has now shut and will never re-open, I’m drinking at a new watering hole. A working men’s club about 1/2 mile away. I drink Sam Smith’s Sovereign Bitter in there, and at £2.20 a pint is the cheapest pint I’ve had in about 8 years. Stefan

B

One of the cider pubs near the uni here does pints of Thatchers traditional for £2.20. Very cheap way to get wasted. And it’s so dry that you don’t want to drink it too quickly!

A

@Walrus1985 You still have Working Men Clubs, that’s very good, I know only one in Inchigore here in Dublin which is still active, others are gone.

W

@AllanH, yes in my village/small town, there are two clubs, and one Miners Welfare, which is the miners’ equivilent, and about 10 pubs within a mile walk. How they keep going God knows. All I know is now it’s going to be more than a 10 minute walk home lol. Stefan

A

You are well served there Stefan! I also have several pubs in walking distance but this is south Dublin City, former second city of Empire. Can get a pint of Beamish for 3,40 which isn’t too bad here.

S

@Brigstowe, which pub’s that?

W

@Allan 3.40 for a pint??? Bloody hell that’s scandalous. Mind you, the landlady, at my now shut pub, is Irish and from Co. Cork. She went back last year and was paying around 5 Euro’s for a pint. I could never afford to go to Ireland with prices like that. That is a shame, because it looks like such a beautiful place. The nearest I’ve got to Ireland is the Isle of Man, which is where I’m off 3 weeks on Tuesday. Will be my 12th visit, I love that place. Stefan

S

Drinking a Shiner Bock atm. I got a chance to visit the Guinness Brewery in Dublin but I was too hung over to sample the fresh product. Some super friendly people in Ireland tho. They kept buying me Poh-tcheen or whatever that wicked stuff is called.

T

Adnams broadside

B

@Spam It was the Cotham Porter Stores. I’ve since learned that the Velindra (just across the river from ASDA Bedminster) does pints of Thatchers for even less than that. Bit of a scabby pub, but hands down the cheapest pint of real cider I’ve ever come across. Even the UoB hall bars can’t match them. Tonight I was on Brigstow Bitter and Hunny Beer (both by Arbor Ales, arguably the most exciting small brewery in town).

A

@Walrus1985 Yes, it’s scandalous and that 3,40 is about cheapest pint you can get here. Poor people can’t socialize in pubs anymore, which is bad in many ways. Anyway, I’m having Karpackie polish beer now and must say this is a very good lager!

S

@brigstowe, Been past there plenty of times but never popped in. Might have to one day. Bedminster’s too far away for me to go for a pint, really.

W

@Allan, never had Karpackie, only Polish beer I’ve had is Tyskie, which wasn’t bad. Saying that though I’m not really a lager drinker, I like my bitter, and real ale. I will drink lager every now and again though as a change. Trouble is more than 5 pints you’re that blown up, it’s unreal. Stefan

A

That’s true, Walrus. Lagers are very easy to drink and can be deceptively strong, like that Karpackie with 5.0 alc., had to check that, thought I was just enjoying the flavour! I really like English style ales and bitters too. Hope Smithwick’s Pale Ale mentioned in other thread catches on and we get more ales on tap here.

P

Andechs Spezial Hell, Lausitzer Porter, Berliner Kindl Bock Dunkel (a few 0,5 l bottles each - in this order (^_^) !!!)

S

Nothing at the moment, but should be filling a couple 64oz growlers up and getting a six pack later today. I’m sort of craving Wells Banana Bread beer. Might go for a milk stout instead, though. Milk stout that’s had some espresso beans soaked in it is a lovely pint.

B

@shikitohno I love milk stout and will be giving your coffee idea a try. Not so fond of the Banana Bread Beer, but many Bavarian wheat beers have those banana-like ester flavours in them.

D

Last night I broke into my Fullers 1845. (A rare treat since they cost $4.59 a bottle and only stock 4 at a time) This evening I will be grilling with a couple of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.

H

Iced coffee

H

If I want to present the illusion of having cream in my iced coffee, I might put some ouzo into it.

A

Smithwick’s Pale Ale. It seems to sell reasonably well, one of my locals already changed keg. Good stuff.

D

Last night I went light with some Pilsner Urquell. Tonight will be Stones Smoked Porter.

T

My Home brew cider. Very strong and very nice.

Made the terrible mistake of buying one of those alcoholic energy drink thingees whilst breaking a 20 at the store. Four Loco Blueberry. I’ve literally tasted cough syrup that was better. I wouldn’t give this stuff to a wino with DTs. It was so bad I’m inclined to avoid any alcoholic beverages for now. I’m still shuddering at the memory of that taste.

Pabst Blue Ribbon, and to be conformist, they are the 16oz. PS @Spyro, those things are awful.

Late night - Iced tea. Loose Indian black tea with lots of spearmint. I make it by the gallon… sorta’ like sun tea but I put my jug between the pilot lights on my gas stove to keep it warm all day while brewing. One gallon lasts about a day.

Iced tea is an abomination IMO. @Pot Poe is an American pint only 16oz? It’s 20 in the UK. Stefan

P

Yes, one pint is 16oz in the US. That explains why the Brits are content w/one or two, i knew i was missing something. Tonight it is Steel Reserve 211 Brew. Don’t get excited, its really pretty awful. At 8.1%, its simply a means to an end, and if its really, really cold- not too bad.

Some very good ales are mentioned here and, like the Tuscans of old, one cannot forbear a cheer for CAMRA for saving the United Kingdom from carbonated, pasteurised keg ‘beer’. Hail the Good Beer Guide. Farewell Watney’s Red Barrel. A decent pint is the one thing to really look forward to when returning from abroad. There is nothing quite like real cask-conditioned un-pasteurised ale of malted barley and hops. My first pint upon recently returning from the sweltering heat of Siena and Florence was TEA by the Hog’s Back Brewery, followed by three more of the same in quick succession. A few more pints of London Pride and King & Barnes went the same welcome way.

Anyone else here a fan of Brains Brewery in Cardiff? I always make a beeline for their pub on St. Mary’s Street if I’m ever on the other side of the Severn. Brains SA is a phenomenal session pint.

P

Yes, I sometimes make beer, including nettle beer and I have an abundance of hops in my garden for home brews. Mead is also brewed. Drinking mead from my faux Anglo-Saxon bull‘s horn vessel, however, causes genetically inherited stress resulting from the 1066 Norman invasion, and the cultural destruction of jolly mead-drinking England. English woe has never been addressed by the European Court of Human Rights. However, if substantial financial recompense from French taxpayers in Normandy is forthcoming then justice will be seen to have been done, and I can finally drink my mead in peace.

That’s too funny! Nothing in my pint glass now. Been on tea all morning. I just googled “nothing” by the way, amazing what it turns up.

New Irish beer called Tom Crean, after the great Antarctic explorer. It’s brewed in Dingle, where Crean was from. Pretty good lager, properly malted and quite sweet. Usually I drink lagers only in summer but this is good for winter too. Besides this Crean’s tap, my local also got Pilsner Urguell and Budejovice Budvar taps at same time. Very nice development!

Mendocino Brewing Company’s White Hawk IPA. Excellent as are all their offerings. My pint glass is a POM juice jar that fits perfectly in a koozie.
