Me? Glad you asked.47 Ronin, part 1.Released in japanese theatres one week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, a real piece of history; an historical drama intended for morale/propaganda purposes. The camera-work and cinematography are breath-taking. A great story, to boot. Saddest part of japanese history was the perversion of their noble culture and traditions by militarist propagandists. This is why one can enjoy the film as a work of art, and yet see the violence done to the culture to make it. A wistful, sad sort of pleasure.

Old Tom & Jerry reruns w/ my 3 & 5 year olds. This stuff still makes me chuckle.

I haven’t seen or have 47 Ronin, but I do like, and have, alot of Japanese Samurai films. Yojimbo, Sanjuro, the Samurai Trilogy, etc., I also really like Zatoichi. What I watched, last night, was Tiger Joe, an Italian production from Margheriti, about these gun runners in wartorn Cambodia. It was decent.

Bang Goes the Theory from BBC. I always suck at science, but this show makes the subject super interesting and damn easy to understand. Schools all over the world should teach science like that~

“24” season 5. I’ve never watched it on TV, but a friend has been loaning me each of the seasons on disc. It’s way better to watch a few episodes uninterrupted by commercials and not have to wait a week to see what happens.

I quit watching TV 4 years ago due to all the stupid ads annoying me and the even dumber shows and news they throw on the tube here. So I’m with snuffegnugen and cstokes on this one. The HBO production of Fatherland , not as interesting as I expected it to be, and certianly inferior than the original novel.

I watched Codename: Wild Geese last night, an 80’s war/action flick with Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnigne, and Klaus Kinski, directed by Margheriti, the guy who did the original Inglorious Bastards… no, I think I’m wrong there, it’s Castellari that did Bastards, but Margheriti has a great filmography as well.

For all of you true fans, Netflix has the DVD’s from the short lived TV series “the Master” starring Lee Van Cleef as a master ninja. Just got through watching an excellent film called “Sin Nombre” It’s about some Honduran immigrants that try to make the journey north to the USA. Really shows a different side of the struggle than what you see here in Phoenix amongst all the Sheriff Joe Arpaio loving, anti-immigration nazis.

I’ve just watched the film ‘1066’ about the three battles that year. Superb film now out on DVD. I think it was made by the UK TV Channel 4.

@ snuffster: Is that a historical drama or documentary? One genre of films I collect is historical dramas. There are lots of UK made ones that are hard to get around here.

Xander, Its historical drama. It was made for UK TV by one of our channels. I highly recommend it: try Googling. If you have problems, its available in my local store - happy to get one for you if needs be, but I would think its available somewhere on the net.

Ok, thanks, I will look it up. I can’t really watch DVDs made in the UK as you have a different color formating system, and also most DVDS are region encoded to prevent them being sold in different markets. Sometimes I can watch on my computer, but not my TV. For most British productions, there pretty much has to be a North American edition for it to be viable. So you getting one for me probably would be futile. Being as its a Channel 4 production and not BBC makes it less likely, but we do get some of their productions. Thanks for the offer though.

The cheapo DVD player from Best Buy Insignia plays PAL DVDs. I also bought a cheap DVD/VCR player at Big Lots a while back, a Phillips, and it plays PAL too. I’m good with a PAL compatable play, but for a die-hard world DVD collector, you need an all region player as well.

Killing time with the Bucs / Cowboys. Other than the fact that I ALWAYS like watching Dallas getting beat, this game has no interest to me. Plus, they’re winning! But in less than an hour… REDSKINS!!!

Most Phillips players can be hacked for all region play. Be warned though, the players are junk. I just threw one out that was 6 months old. It was freeze in the middle of play. It might have been caused by the hack code, but either way it went in the bin. On the flip side, APEX players were the best when they were still around. Ran like a top.

I had a cheap phillips DVD player that I got for about $50 USD. It lasted almost eight months before it quit reading discs (and I never used a hack code). I’m kind of glad it quit though. I upgraded to a Magnavox blu-ray. Right now I’m watching one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s called “Tideland”, directed by Terry Gilliam, so I guess I should have known it would be strange.

Mine did the same thing, snuffegnugen. I paid around $40 for it at Wally’s. It was an upconverter as well, so I thought it would be a good player. Last night I watched the Patriots v. Bills game. GO PATS!

When DVDs 1st came out, it seems mine were breaking down quick, and they were much more expsive then. I bought a $178 player, can’t recall the brand, but well known, maybe GE, Sony… but that thing didn’t last long at all. My 2 players I have now were cheap and have lasted now for a long while, I think over 2 yrs or so now and no problems. Now, with players being $30 if it lasts me 6 months I don’t feel robbed. I think the basic mechanics of making them have gotten better in time. But the 2 I have are cheap ones and have lasted me a while and still going good. What I didn’t like, was one of them I needed an RF converter, which I’d never bought before, and I went to Circuit City and the cheapest one they had was $30 bucks, and I have since seen them for $10 and less, and now I don’t even need it.

@midnight: I suppose I’ll divulge my thoughts on them. The first remake was okay. I felt that the gratuitous use of F words was a bit much, but all in all it was an okay slasher/horror movie. In the director’s cut there is a pretty horrid rape scene at the mental hospital. That was a huge turn off and very much not needed. I think that Halloween 2 (H2) was deplorable. This really made me question Rob Zombie’s train of thought. Now Michael Myers is a glorified Hobo. Eating out of trashcans, living in corn fields. The supernatural aspect of the film really put me off. I also did not care for the quick acceptance that Laurie Strode has for Michael being her brother. I think that the Loomis character was really a pity. Taking the Loomis from the original franchise and turning him into a huge prick with an ego was just bad. Bleh. Luckily, Rob Zombie will not be directing the Halloween movie coming out next year. Now don’t take this as me not liking Rob Zombie. In High School I enjoyed his music and I greatly enjoy his first two movies House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. I simply don’t care for what he did with a franchise that is a foundation for the genre.

Well mate, if you are a big fan of the originals, DON’T see them. I had to re-watch all of the original franchise to erase the bad memories.

I like Rob Zombie’s music, but my wife LOVES it. One of our first dates was going to see Zombie’s Halloween. I didn’t think it was horrible, but agree that “originals” are almost always better. I did listen to an interview with Rob, and if I remember correctly he wasn’t terribly keen on the idea of remaking Halloween, not wanting to screw it up, if you will. He is a great person, still. The Devil’s Rejects is one of my favorite films. Anyways, I just finished watching “The Sneeze,” linked from another post, about 6 or 7 times. How far humanity has come! It brought a tear to my eye!

I picked the DVD set of, “Prisoner Cell Block H” today. I remember watching this way way back in the day. It’s still entertaining. I was watching some today. Anyone else remember this?

Just finished the fourth disc of Ergo Proxy. Probably finish watching it this week. Still waiting for Bakemonogatari to air the last few episodes, but the studio apparently has a heavy work load. @Xander: I know you can change the region settings on a computer’s disc drive, if you happen to have a DVD drive in it. However, I don’t know what OS you’re using. Windows only lets you change regions a couple of times. As far as I know, my drive is considered region free by my laptop at present. And I’d swear there’s a setting in VLC or some other open source media player to view PAL. It’s just a codec thing as far as I know, nothing technically says a US monitor can’t play PAL, they’re just configured to decode the stream for NTSC and not PAL.

@ midnightmosesuk: Jon Pertwee was the only classic Doctor not to have a Cybermen story. He did meet them in 1983’s 20th anniversary, “The Five Doctors” but they were more or less just scenery in that story. His character was based partly on both James Bond and Mr. Spock. He’s not my favorite either, but he’s near the top. Yes, I know way too much about Doctor Who.

Last thing I watched was ‘The Proposal’ as I tend to watch films rather than tv however one I recommend to all for a good chuckle, is ‘Zombieland’. Cracking comedy.

@MMUK, Manhunter has some moments, but its so campy in places its laughable. OMG, Enough with the campy '80s music, please! This is not an episode of Miami Vice! Most of the acting was bland and somewhat forced feeling. “Its just you and me now…, Sport!” bWHAHHHA HAHAHAHAH, cough up my snuff funny. The kid & wife were horrible too. Brian Cox was excellent, though. Red Dragon OTOH really got everything much darker. I really felt like I understood what was in Dolllarhyde’s mind in that one. Terrifying and compelling. I need to rewatch this one soon. They really emphasize that Dollarhyde feels that he’s undergoing an apotheosis. You understand the mythology the way he does. In Manhunter, all of the dragon stuf becomes just detail. Anyway, its my fav of the bunch.

Haha, I get it, FLESHED OUT! I enjoyed it as well. Nice revenge flick.

The old Batman serials are great. Went to the theater last night and watched “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Damn fine remake, one of the best next to “Texas Chainsaw”. Jackie Earle Haley as Krueger was great, on par with Englund.

I love that movie! All the ones by Christopher Guest are hilarious like Best in Show, but that and A Mighty Wind are the funniest. Same group of actors in each one, clever stuff.

I like them too, A Mighty Wind I saw last week. Best in Show is a little scary because I like dogs! Dialogue in those films is brilliant, it’s nice to watch them again.

Watched the new “Swamp People” on The History Channel. A more fitting name for what i witnessed would have been “Gator Genocide prt.I” Really it was that twisted. Of coarse, they taste great and make some really nice boots, but i’am guessing PETA will have this off soon.

I watched H-Man last night, it’s a 60’s TOHO film. It was ok, but on the boring side.

Underworld. I’ve seen it before, but it’s worth re-watching.

@Snuffy I had put off purchasing my copy until it went on sale for $2.50 at FYE. The individual DVDs only have about a half hour of episodes, which is OK if you can only handle them in small doses. Bizzarro Japanese humour cracks me up, so I find it pretty funny, but I can easily see why it’s way off other people’s radar.

I think I’m hooked on this new American series The Event, seen 3 episodes on Rte this far and it’s very interesting mix of aliens, conspiracies and soap opera. Something to replace Lost for addicts.

Old King of The Hill episodes I somehow missed the first time. I am a huge fan of this show. (And Office Space, another Mike Judge classic.)

@BigDaddySnuff I grew up on punk and I do love a lot of the British stuff, Subhumans, Crass, Damned, Stranglers, Rudimentary Peni and more, but the American bands really took things to another level. Just look at the labels that bloomed from punk like SST, Dischord, Taang, Touch&Go, and the dozens of other labels that only did a band or two. England did not seem to ever ascend to those heights. From the late 70’s till the mid 90’s there were dozens of zines and any band with a decent running van could tour coast to coast by using Maximumrocknroll and Flipsides classifieds. Maybe I might feel different if I grew up across the pond and the video @Vito445 posted was awesome. Cocksparrer played a few blocks away from me earlier this summer but tics sold out pretty quick so I didn’t make that one. Rock on folks.

Inglourious Basterds Pulp Fiction Tarantino binge lately, which was set off due to the 2nd trailer of Django Unchained, which looks outstanding. Pulp Fiction will always be his masterpiece though.

@TopographicTales Oh the new Django looks great. There are probably 20 other movies based on Django in one form or another and I love them all. Tarantino is the bomb when it comes to the Grindhouse genre.

@chris I don’t know what life would be without Kill Bill. Some of the bloodiest most beautifully choreographed fight scenes in the film biz. I love it.

Yeah, Tarantino’s vision is always spot on and he pulls off whatever he wants to with such style, not to mention the dialogue in his scripts are always amazing. And, yeah, Kill Bill is an awesome double feature. The first being my favorite, but the second is a great continuation. I read somewhere that there will be a third at some point. As for tonight… Evil Dead Evil Dead II Army of Darkness The trailer for the Evil Dead remake leaked (in bootleg fashion, as a cam copy recorded at a film festival) and though I’m not big on remakes, this one looks outstanding. It’s going to be a gorefest, and looks to be a more serious take on the original. Anywho, it got me in the mood for the series.

Last night I watched an old favorite, though not so old at all, just haven’t seen it in a while so I pulled it off the shelf… Layer Cake (2004) Daniel Craig as Mr. X as a drug dealer who gets into a mess of a situation. Awesome film.

Long Pigs- A really good low budget mockumentary. It’s one of those story lines where you actually create a bond with the killer. This movie gets a 7/10 in my book. Sorry kids this one is too graphic to post the trailer for but you can find it on youtube.

Just started on the first season last night. I put it off for far too long, for who knows what reason, and it turns out that it’s absolutely amazing. Way better than I thought. I’m a horror fanatic, so I should have watched from the beginning, but better late than never. I’m gonna watch two episodes every night until I’m caught up. Whoever hasn’t given this a chance yet, do it, it’s so very worth it.

I’ve been watching AHS too, since the beginning… LOVE IT! Right now I’m working my way through “the walking dead” I started this week and I’m on the second season, episode 8… I can’t stop watching it!

I haven’t watched The Walking Dead since halfway through the second season, it was one of my favorites when I kept up with it. Then I just fell off with the shows. But, I’m getting back into them and TWD is going to be in the mix soon.

Saw “Diobolique” for the first time this Halloween season. Before Psycho, Peeping Tom, and Repulsion, there was Diabolique. Oh and I watched a few last night… Total Recall (remake) - 5/10 This is the absolute best score I can give it. It just wasn’t a worthy remake at all. Savages (Oliver Stone’s new film) - 7.5/10 Now this, this was a solid film. It’s not on par with his old films (Platoon, Wall Street, JFK, NBK, etc), but it’s a damn good one. Tense, vicious, humorous, stylish though a bit of a mess and keeps you wondering how it’s all gonna end up. The ending though was a bit of a let down for me, but you can make your own decision on that. Definitely worth a watch.

A disappointment (personally). Sometimes I find one I really prefer over the other, or just really like. I’ll just say that the one I wanted to vote for didn’t get the nomination. I hope that’s not too much of a political statement.

@howdydave I’m a Brit so I have no direct interest in the election just a general interest in what is happening in the world. By chance I have a day off work tomorrow and had a good day / adrenalin rush yesterday so I am up and awake. I have not really followed the whole campaign and did not watch the debates so I can’t really comment.

End of Watch - 8.5/10 I’m gonna start rating new films I’ve seen because thats what I do in another forum, it’s habit and can give others and idea of whether it’s worth a watch. Anyway, this was a great film. It’s tense as all hell, the characters and performances were fantastic and it moves along at a good pace. It’s definitely the best I’ve seen of the films involving shaky cam syndrome.

@topographictales the 80’s version of the blob is classic. I’ll have to check out the original Italian job and the ipcress file. I recently watched some Vincent Price classics, Tales of Terror which was extremely good, especially the Casque of Amontillado part. Also watched the Masque of The Red Death, another Poe film. Finally I watched The Last Man On Earth. Next on my list is The Pit and The Pendulum and The Tomb Of Ligeia. Maybe The Raven too

@Claydonious Yeah it is, Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith and great gore fx, it holds a special place. You’re killing it man. Some of my favorite 80’s horrors are Re-Animator, From Beyond, The Thing, Maniac, The Prowler, The Burning, Intruder (1989), The Beyond, Society (the finale makes the whole film worth it), Dead & Buried and The Changeling. Just to name a few off the top of my head. If there’s any in here that you haven’t seen yet, definitely give them a go.

@topographictales I love all the Re-animator films. Even the last one because its so utterly insane. The changeling is also great. Slow build which I like. The thing is a classic of course. The others I will have to check out. I think this weekend I’m gonna start with I Spit On Your Grave and see where Netflix takes me from there. Maybe some Herschel Gordon Lewis stuff. Maybe some MST3K or rifftrax too. I actually saw rifftrax live do Plan 9 From Outer Space. Best night at the theater I’ve ever had.

@Claydonious HG Lewis is the man. And, believe it or not Blood Feast II: Sloppy Seconds is an absolute blast! I mean definitely give the first a chance and some of his earlier work, but that one is a riot. Tonight, I watched a film that I was skeptical about but read some good things from a few horror fans that I trust. The Bay - 8/10 So this turned out to be the best found footage film that I’ve seen to date, easy. I’m not a big fan of these types of films really, but this one was the best attempt yet. I like that there was a website where footage that was found could be uploaded to, so that there would actually be different people’s views and different experiences from that day, I thought that was a huge bonus and brought a realistic approach to it. The political angle was nice addition (and probably accurate), the actors made it believable and the FX and gross stuff was all there. There was even a few jumpy moments tossed in and they were definitely effective, though the gross out scenes were even more so. Didn’t think I would like it but I enjoyed the hell out of it, it was tense and believable.

Some old “Nick Carter, Master Detective” movies. In all the years that I’ve listened to Nick Carter on the radio, I never pictured Walter Pidgeon as Nick!

@Faust Tom Baker is my favorite. I love the episode arc that shows Davros creating the Daleks from the Kaled race on Skaro. Genesis of the Daleks is the episode arc title.

@Claydonius He’s my favorite too. Tom Baker was the first Doctor Who I saw, back when you had to catch it on PBS (no BBC America back then). I was totally hooked on it. I have a steady stream queued up on Netflix. My wife and I saw Genesis of the Daleks a couple of weeks ago (I’ve got her hooked on it too).

They had subtle hints through the whole movie, but don’t really give you the whole picture until they show the alien prototype at the very end. A lot people said it was boring, but I thought it was great. At the same time, I also rented The Raven with John Cusak, and that was pretty good too.

I’ve heard so many mixed feelings about Prometheus from so many people. I’m sure ill catch it eventually. I love Ridley Scott and H. R. Giger so it’s at least going to look awesome, I know that.

Just watched Lawless. Good movie, I recommend it.

In the last week or so… Lawless - 8/10 (Shia was annoying, but Tom Hardy is a fantastic actor and the film was damn good.) Argo - 9/10 (One of the best this year. Affleck is 3 for 3 in the directors chair.) Sinister - 7/10 (For a mainstream horror with cliches out the ass, it was still pretty solid. Great atmospheric music/sound.) Noroi: The Curse - 9/10 (Took me long enough. Easily the best and most creative found footage film.) Marebito - 7/10 (Bizarre and unexplained, but still an interesting Japanese horror.) Unforgiven - 10/10 (Needs no explanation.)

The Finder – great show I discovered on the INTERNET! there was SNUFF in episode 11! the girl’s like “i found this, it’s called snuff, not like kill, but apparently old dudes used to sniff it in cave man times” And then at the end, the good guy pulls out the snuff, and on a misdirect opens it and blows it in the bad guys face, Bam! Pow! Horay for the good guys! (And Hooray for snuff!

Just started watching Star Trek: Next Generation on Netflix. I’m liking it a lot more than I thought I would actually. A nice treat from watching Midsomer Murders for two weeks straight. All Midsomer murders episode are 2 hours each so there’s no quick watch of them. Nice to be back to a regular 45 minute show. Quick watch. Any other Trekkies or Midsomer murderies out there.

Been catching up on American Horror Story season 2. Gotta work on Dexter as well. Also 666 Park Avenue…

Ichi is such an awesome film. Miike is the man. I’m real big on abstract Japanese horror and yakuza films, but a lot of the “supposedly creepy girl with black hair” horrors just bore me, which is what so many of them have become. Battle Royale (amazing), Marebito, Noroi, House (outstanding Japanese oldie), Audition (easily one of the best buildups ever), 3 Extremes (Jap, Korean, Chinese) or Imprint. Anything from Takashi Miike is going to be interesting, like Imprint, Gozu, Visitor Q and such. But, I find that Korean films are my favorite from that part of the world. Some are horror, a lot are revenge, but there are so many amazing films from South Korea. But, there is a new one called Pieta that’s supposed to be brutally violent and also quite moving that just won at the Venice festival. Look into that too, because it’s by a talented director.

This just got sooo serious! This weeks episode was insane.

Just found that my Virgin cable service has a whole load of episodes of A Touch Of Frost available on demand, so just finished watching one. Can’t make up my mind whether to watch another or go and read in bed…

The Quiet Family is a fantastic black comedy. I’m a little scared that Kim Ji-woon is making his English language debut with Arnold for an all out action flick. He’s a great director and I don’t want to see him do something bad, since his resume is near perfect. I hope it’s fun though. Still haven’t seen Attack the Gas Station. I keep putting it off for some reason. I’ve actually never seen a North Korean film.

I’ve recently started watching QI and really enjoy it. It’s funny and educational at the same time - edutainment.

oh go for it watch attack the gas station. The best part is that the dvd is worth watching twice once with subtitles and then with the english dub because it’s the worst dub ever. It sounds like they hired hobos and paid them in patatoe chips.

After watching TNG all week I decided to watch the first episode of deep space nine. Pretty good so far. I remember watching it a little on tv as a kid but never got into it back then. @TopographicTales I never liked many creepy black haired girl Japanese movies. I did enjoy House a long time ago ill have to re watch it though. I watched Sonatine the other day and it was definitely a great intro to yakuza films. Speaking of House,though, how do you feel about the 80’s movie House with William Katt. I watched it when I was 8 or 10 and its been one of my favorite movies ever since. I watch it at least once a year. I’ll even watch House II if I’m in the mood for some goofiness

Dexter is good, I’m still working my way through season two. So you guys have made me curious. Could someone recommend maybe two or three Asian horror pics to check out? I don’t want to have to buy a copy, I have netflix, and I’m pretty limited to it, so maybe not the most obscure of the obscure. Also no snuff flix (a coincidence of the term- not a little joke). Re-watched (for like the 15th time) one of my favorite, and easily one of the best, films of 2011… Drive - 10/10 For me, this film is perfection. Everything from the outstanding performances of Gosling, Brooks and Cranston to the awesome cinematography, direction, music and violence come together so perfectly for what’s become an instant classic, if you ask me. I’ve heard all kinds of people call the first half too slow and boring, but I couldn’t disagree more as every scene is gripping and it all matters as you get a feel for these characters and the buildup of tension. Nicolas Winding Refn is so damn good at what he does, he’s one of those directors who’s style is completely unique and it’s almost a guarantee you’re in for a treat when he puts a new film out. For those who haven’t seen it yet… Get on it! It’s fantastic! I can not wait for Only God Forgives. Gosling and Refn teamed up again has gold written all over it.

Very interesting! Didn’t notice, as I haven’t seen a good pic of a plant before. I wonder how many folk like/dislike the different direction the second season took. I was kind of bummed at first, but not really anymore.

They didn’t have nuns that looked like Lily Rabe, even Jessica Lange looks a hundred years younger then the nuns at my Grade School. Now that was a horror story! The fear those tiny woman bestowed upon the children is imprinted on all that attended till this day. They were quick with that pointer stick and the yard stick way more painfull then a paddle. I interested what the third season will bring,Maybe a haunted bordello of blood? Or hotel hell?

I was kind of weary in the beginning of this season, but now it’s fantastic and the questions are building. I love how complex they get further into the seasons of this show. Awesome writing.

Love this film, Pitt kills it in his role. Gilliam is a genius, and I’ve read he’s got a new one in the works. Stoked! The Good Shepherd - 8.5/10 The hell with the mixed reviews about this one. I love it and think its one of the better espionage films out there. Sure, it’s long and lacks action, but that’s the point, it’s more realistic to what spying was really like back then. It’s based on a true story, the performances are great and the direction from De Niro is solid. Headhunters - 7.5/10 Solid Norwegian thriller. It got critical praise and I kept putting it off, but it’s a damn good flick.

@Claydonious good on you for checking out DS9! In trying to be objective, I really feel that was the best of all Star Trek series’. Keep in mind that like TNG before and Voyager after, they didn’t really hit their stride until season 3, then it becomes amazing, and addictive. Try to stay with it until then and I’m sure you’ll agree. @Chef_Dean that and many other videos of snuff mills can be found in our library section. Some are in German and a few in Polish, but you can still get the gist if you don’t understand the languages. Also members are encouraged to submit ones they have discovered. We have ones showing Bernard, Pöschl, WoS, SG, and a few independent ones! Lots of (positive) comments about American Horror Story on the last few pages. I watched the first season online and thought it was total rubbish. Started off ok, then you could tell the writers were making it up as they went along. Kind of the horror version of “Lost”. Totally contrived, convoluted, self contradictory, and pandering. I don’t say this to offend any of you who liked it, and it did have some good elements, but I started groaning by the third or fourth episode. Movies this weekend were: Anne of a Thousand Days ( very good, but you will learn more watching the HBO series “TheTudors”) The Name of the Rose -based on the book by Umberto Eco. Better Off Dead - 10/10 Always going to be a favorite, ever since I was a kid. It’s got so many awesome laughs, it’s light hearted (even when it’s dark) and Cusack is one of those likable actors that can cheer me up. Garden State - 10/10 Now this, this is one of my favorite films. It paints a very real picture of Jersey, they might as well have taken these characters right out of my group of friends. This is one of the more true to life love stories on film, Braff did an awesome job with the direction, the performances are top notch, Natalie Portman is fantastic as the oddball girl that you can’t not fall in love with, the music selection is perfection and even some of it was filmed in my town. Now, I just wish Braff would get behind the camera again. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 10/10 Need I say more… Flawless as far as I’m concerned, too bad Gondry went on to direct some terrible films after this masterpiece.

I’ve been wanting to see Better Off Dead again, haven’t seen it since the 80’s, also the same deal with Heathers. I must say though, re:AHS, even if the first season didn’t ring your bells, you might like the second, they kind of went a different direction with it. (no guarantee however) I did like Garden State, not that it was perfect, but it had it’s moments. Must get at my uninitiated copy of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, also not seen since the late 80’s. Also must check out some Troma(sp?) fliques, don’t think I’ve seen a one of them…

@bob Portman uptight? I don’t get that at all, she’s a fantastic actress and I think she nailed that role, though Black Swan is her masterpiece. And, Eternal Sunshine is kind of sci-fi so I wouldn’t take their relationship too seriously. But, there are also people of all kinds, so I can believe almost anything when it comes to relationships, I’ve seen weirder. @Mr_O Troma? I happen to be a huge fan of Troma’s ridiculously cheesy over the top low budget classics. I also enjoy some of their most recent, but if your going to start down that path, I’d start with The Toxic Avenger. Then, though newer to their lineup, is Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, which is one of their must watches. But, I warn you, Troma is not for everyone. As for Joseph Gordon Levitt, love that guy, he’s a very likable actor. Brick, 500 Days of Summer, 50/50 and Looper are my favorites of his and Inception if we include films which he wasn’t the star.

Oh portman is a great actress. And when I said too uptight I didn’t mean over-all but for that “Manic Pixie Girl” role she played in that movie. Like portman seems like someone who takes her time is thorough and not spontanious. In astrology terms she seems like she has a strong virgoness. It made it impossible to suspend disbelief. If you like black Swan watch Perfect Blue it’s an obvious inspiration. Eternal Sunshine is great I love all of the Charlie Kaufman movies, the guy is an amazingly literaly and creative screen writer (adaptation is probably my favorite of his). Troma is great if for no other reason then Fat Guy goes Nuts (I think I got that right). Though Shell shocked (or was it Shell Shock) is the most unintentionaly hilarious movie about the horrors of adapting to society after war trauma (for one thing the vietnam sceens that are obviousily in up state new york). I really have to watch Inception again, because when I tried watching it I really didn’t like it and it might just have been the mood or timeing or my dislike of DieCrappyOh as an actor (I think he’s terrible at it).

mr. tales- I think I’ll check out the Toxic Avenger, I believe Netflix has it and Poultrygeist. I saw an interview with “mr. Troma”, whatever his name is, I can’t remember, but it caught my interest…

Toxy is great. Well it’s terrible but that’s a huge part of their charm.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

@bob I’m on the other side of the Leo topic as well, I think he’s done some great work, but I can also see not liking him. But, he put up solid performances in Blood Diamond, Gilbert Grape, Basketball Diaries, The Aviator, J. Edgar (even though the film wasn’t that great), Body of Lies and The Departed. And, I can’t wait to see him in my most anticipated film of the year…Django! At least we can have civilized conversations about our differences of opinion. On some of the movie sites, there would be a bickering match about stuff like this. @Mr_O It’s great for a laugh and insanely entertaining. Like @bob said, the terrible C movie quality is the charm of Troma, it’s demented humorous fun because of the ridiculously low quality. And, Lloyd Kaufman’s the founder of Troma, he’s quite a character himself.

I love watching dexter too… as an added bonus for me, his “apartment” building is next door to my mom’s building and I catch glimpses of her balcony in the background of some of the shots. I know most of the series is shot in CA but they still film his apartment scenes in Bay harbor Island, Fl.

@bob I get that from Portman too. Everything I see her in, I can tell she’s acting. A good actor should be able to fool my brain into thinking the situation/person is real. Partly I think its that she’s highly intelligent, and probably overthinks what she is doing. Agree to disagree on Portman. Django Unchained - 10/10 Saw it on Christmas, because a Tarantino film is one worth going to the theater for. It’s an outstanding blend of exploitation violence and spaghetti western gunplay, amazing dialogue, direction and cinematography as per usual and the performances from the whole cast were fantastic (especially Christoph and Leo). A great portrayal of the horrors of slavery, the emotion of a love story and some hilarious moments combine, sometimes all at the same time, like no one else can. And, let’s not forget the classic QT musical choices. I couldn’t have asked for a better xmas present to myself. Can’t wait to see it again. QT is a master filmmaker.

There was a Twilight Zone marathon last night(possibly still), found a couple I hadn’t seen before. When I was a kid I was just nuts for that show!

Killing Them Softly - 9/10 Pitt killed it, stylish direction from Dominik, the rest of the cast was great, the violence was just right and the message about this country was well put. The last few lines form Pitt to close the film were perfect. Skyfall - 10/10 Easily belongs up there with the greats of the series and had quite a few throwbacks to the Connery days. Sam Mendes knows how to make a damn good film, Deakins is one of the best cinematographers in the industry and the film is visually stunning, Bardem makes an amazing villain and this role is right up there with his from No Country and there is some good backstory on Bond thrown in as well which was interesting. Loved it and watched it twice. Cloud Atlas - 9/10 Not for everyone, but it’s a beautiful film with cinematography and scenery that had me glued to the screen for the entire runtime of almost 3 hours. Great concept, some amazing performances from the entire cast as they played almost 6 different roles each and it keeps you interested because it jumps back and forth from story to story at just the right pace. Le Cercle Rouge - 9/10 Been diving into Melville’s films lately, because I’ve wanted to for sometime and finally found some great copies online. Great crime film. Le Samourai - 10/10 Another outstanding film from Melville. This one is very minimal filmmaking, but manages to get the tension through the roof and he does a great job at making you root for criminals. Some great camera work and loved the score. Melville is becoming one of my favorite directors of all time even with just seeing these two films. Can’t wait until my Criterion Collection DVD of Army of Shadows gets here.

For all of 3 seconds. I think every die hard DS fan was very disappointed with their inclusion in the film. I will give Burton kudos for creating an organic Collinsport, that set was incredible. There is a nice featurette on the Blu Ray.

That is a shame. I’ve been gravitating toward the older movies. The actors really act (no CGI, no camera edit every 2 seconds, real sword fighting) and the oldies, like some art, require some input from the viewer to get something back. It seems thet these days actors just need a pretty face. And there are so MANY new actors-can’t tell the players without a program they used to say. My wife likes 'em because everybody in them is dead.

@ad_noseum If you can check out the series “The Tudors” was on a few years back. Showtime made it. I found it online for free someplace and watched 4 seasons worht of them within a couple of weeks. Some wives last whole seasons of the show rather than just minutes of a 2 hour film. You get a lot more detail and character building. Also of note is the film, “Anne of A Thousand Days” which zones in on Anne Boleyn period pretty specifically.

@Xander Thanks. We did recently watch 'Anne of a Thousand Days". Richard Burton was the big draw for us there. I think it was his film debut? These kind of historical shows is how I get the SWMBO interested in history. He was a big drinker, so’s I had a lot of Toque Champaign while watching. It DOES taste a lot like it!

2 nights ago, I joined in with the GF ( I usually don’t watch much TV… except for antiques roadshow or global news ) But we watched a show BATES MOTEL ( not the movie ) I thought it was very well done at times, and the actor who played “YOUNG NORMAN” did a great job of playing a up and coming physcopath, his facial gestures were remarkable.

@AANYCAARDS: Bates Motel is terrific. Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga are quite the duo. The whole season has been great, there are only 2 or 3 episodes left but it has been picked up for a second season.

@SnuffySnuff: The other day I googled obscure horror movies, Threads popped up in one of the searches. It’s available on YouTube. It is a very powerful film, certainly left me with a bleek outlook. It still holds up with the special effects. Very good.

That’s a shame. In the UK, at least, smeghead is about as offensive as ‘you silly sausage’, even though the meaning of smegma isnt a pleasant thought.

Glenn Danzig’s song “mother”, Heather Graham (oh rollergirl) and the Melissa McCathy bit were the about the only other things I liked. @BAS - what did you think? Saw it yesterday, I loved the book, but acknowledge that would’ve been hard to translate in a movie … but I just thought the movie was one of the best action/thriller/suspense/horror films I have laid eyes on … even with the rewrites and the transitions that were clearly different in writing.

@snuffbrandt: yeah, I really enjoyed it. Like you said, in a lot of ways it’s different from the book but it really works on its own. I had a blast when I saw it, and thought it was a smart, exciting, and enjoyable movie. Not the book but a really clever rethinking of it, that works great on it’s own.
