I’m curious what the difference is between regular and white portion snus. They seem to have the same weight and nicotine content, from what I have seen. If anyone could answer this for me I would really appreciate it. Thanks. ~Snuffy

T

Here is the description from buysnus.com. The classical portion-packed snus (original) has dark and moistened portion pouches, which produce a more rapid secretion of saliva. The taste and scent are clear. White is a new portion-packed snus that run less and taste longer The white pouches will be drier on the outside with the moist snus inside. But that goes away as soon as it enters the mouth.

B

Regular portions are moister than white portions. Most of us feel the white portions hold flavor longer. It takes them a while to get going. Flavor is generally a bit milder, but essentially the same. Another advantage is white portions do not need to be refrigerated. You can and most still do , but since they are dry to start with, there is little risk of them drying out.

B

I find that if you wet them before putting them in they have a quicker release. Another trick with white portions I’ve found works is place it in the lower lip let it get wet then place it in the upper lip and enjoy. Though portions are really weak in my opnion.

T

With either type I will occasionally press on the outside of my lip squeezing the snus, giving a little extra flavor release.

A

The regular portions are much better

B

they are marketed towards woman the white portions are.

S

Original portions are sprayed with snus juice, and White portions use a different paper and no spray. That’s the basic difference. Different brands have different styles of white portions too. From what I’ve heard (haven’t tried it yet) Skruf’s new white portions are really great.

S

This isn’t supposed to break open in your mouth right? I got a General Snus sample packet, it came with four kinds, opened wintergreen and popped it in. found some bits in my mouth minutes into it. Tastewise, it’s more refined but not weaker than the Camel.

B

squarefiend, it seems this is a common complaint with the wintergreen portions. It’s not supposed to break open, but they do. The wintergreen is the only one I’ve heard that does it consistently. It happens from time to time with all brands but not often.

X

getsnus sent me a tin of general wintergreen as my “mystery can”. I don’t like it. it burns like nobody’s business and messes up whatever you might be tasting otherwise. Give me a nice plain anyday. Since I seem to have gotten myself hooked on this stuff, I just keep a plain Göteborg in most of the time. I think I only used 2 or 3 portions of wintergreen, and have not had one break open on me. The wife won’t touch anything other than a mini, so these might last a loooong time. I was eating a pickle a few days ago while using snus, and the pickle bite slid up and knocked the snus out of place without me realizing it. Next thing I knew I was chewing my snus! I’m using these things too often, I think. It feels comfortable to have one in, even long after the flavor is gone. Its uncomfortable and or distracting to not have one in. Why is this?

C

pickle + snus = yak

X

there was no yak involved. No ox either.

C

Was there a Ralph there?

X

might have been some Ralph’s in my nose. Can’t remember, it was several days ago.

Tre Ankare one of my favorite snus’ is only made in the white/dry style. Not too big of a problem but the dry portions do tend to wear on the gums more.

Someone told here that original portions are sprayed with snus-juice, thats wrong. It’s just diffrent paper they’re using. thinner and more porous. The wife of my cousin(she’s swedish) showed me a few years ago to build my homemade portions. It’s quiet easy. You take a paper handkerchief and seperate the layers. Here in germany they have normally 3-4 layers. Take a piece of the single layer and put a prilla on it. Fold it together and under your lip. The postive is that it feels like a normal prilla and you haven’t got the black stuff between your teeth when you are taking the prilla out! Happy trying! Scott

B

According to Swedish Match regular portions are sprayed with water as a final step in the process. I really don’t think the material is different. The new 01/02 series uses different portion material.

P

@Longcut, the method of using a paper handkerchief works pretty well. I’ve used a piece of paper kitchentowel and wrapped some RR Maccoboy in it. I have this “portion” in my lip right now and it’s perfect.

I’m in the White camp. I enjoy the regs and certainly enjoy the sterks (Onyx in right now) but the whites being drier, I think, yield a better and more even experience. True, they take longer to get going but I find that they stay put longer. Once I start playing with it, it’s over other than the occasional lick for flavor. If you want to get your white portion going more drink some water. It makes everything wetter and the flavor flows. I find this works with coffee too (or any beverage for that matter…whiskey, beer, gin, or what have you), but water makes me taste more tobacco. I feel that the bags are the same and the moisture content of the snus itself is not that much different. I’ve pulled a few out of the potions and made a prilla out of them for an experiment. They felt too small when I did that which is another reason why I am not partial to los…my portions seem to grow each time until I’m dizzy as shit and the tobacco bits infiltrate everything. I guess it’s the addictive personality I have. Potion snus takes my tendencies away.

P

@Longcut, your idea has opened up a whole new snussing world for me!!! I have some Poschl Schmalzler A in my lip now. It’s so easy, just cut a piece of paper kitchen towel to the size you want your portion. Then insert as much tobacco as you prefer, roll your portion and put it in your lip. Works like a charm. Highly recommended.

S

Coffee filters work very well too and don’t fall apart as readily as tissues or kitchen towels. I’m not sure what chemical residue may be present in paper towels, but all kinds of toxic stuff can be used in making paper products. Coffee filters are at least designed to be used in food preparation, so presumably they would not contain anything objectionable.

T

I might have to try that with my Gotland lös.

P

@stitch, yes you are quite right and I do have a box of coffee filters. This IS the must informative forum in the universe. @Debbie, try it and let us know please.

W

Does the juice make you ill or do you spit it? I’m wicked curious about lipping nasal snuff but I haven’t worked up the gumption to try it yet.

P

@wickedkitchen, I do not spit and I had no side effects.

S

Correct me if I’m wrong, but they use teabag material for the portions. Unless everyone over at snuson has bad info, they spray the original with juice, and don’t do that to the whites. Thus, the whites are more dry. The paper handkerchief method is just emulating that, although one downside is having bits of tissue stuck to your gums sometimes.

P

shikitohno, I had a coffee filter portion in my lip for an hour without problems. I won’t use paper handkerchiefs because they are to filmsy. The coffee paper portion ended up looking like a ordinary snus portion and could have given some more mileage

L

Here in the supermarket you can buy huge empty teabags for making loose tea in large teapots. It’sabout 3€ for 50 of them. Hundreds of portions… @pieter Try the layer of an hanky! Trust me! Everything stays in place in your mouth and the feeling is lös-style ;-)!
