OT - Sickness

I’ve had 8 weeks sick leave from work because I got swine flu, and then secondary infections that left me gasping for air. Thankfully, I have a great Doctor who had time to actually listen and help (thats maybe rare) Ill be back at work after Christmas. I am a public servant in the UK and my employment conditions allow for this. I just wondered what experiences other folks had with their work?

My last job with the post office was a joke. My foot was in a bad way because of some new boots I’d got. I literally couldn’t walk. I saw the doctor who said “take a couple days off and let the swelling go down or, it’ll play up for a lot longer”. I took a couple days off and went back, if I’d known what the procedure was when I went back only 48 hours later, I would have taken a lawyer.

@snuffster “I am a public servant in the UK and my employment conditions allow for this” Is that Police or Prison Officer? Probably the last couple jobs in this messed-up place that has to play by the law. It must be nice having an employer that gives a s**t, unlike most!

Well, I work for the federal government here in the USA, and I don’t really know what would happen if you actually needed to take 8 weeks off. I probably have about 30 days of sick leave saved up, but after thats gone I would have to deplete my annual leave next. Once that was gone too, I don’t necessarily think they would fire me, but I would probably be in Leave without pay status.

@snuffegnugen Do you get statutory sick pay on your side of the pond ?

well, i work for a small company driving a tanker that sucks out effluent from toilet blocks on building sites and my sick leave is also my holidays, so, if i havnt used my holiday up and i fall ill, then my sick leave is my holiday, how sick is that lol.

I don’t know. I work for a small company brewing beer and have not been ill since taking up snuff a year ago (is that a coincidence?). I broke my scaphoid bone in my right wrist 3 years ago and was put on sick leave for 10 weeks. But I don’t like being off sick so I worked in the office selling the beer with my left wrist (I’m right handed but taught myself to write with my left hand). I’m not sure what our company policy is really (I think you get statutory sick pay) because I’ve only been off sick for one day in the last 9 years. I must be lucky as I’ve never suffered from flu or such like, although my girlfriend had Swine Flu over the Summer and it wasn’t very nice.

I’ve been retired now for almost 10 Years. My last employer was an Halifax (UK) firm. I was their manager stationed here in their Hull (UK) office with a contract to Humberside CC, and then it became back to Hull City County Council. I suffered a heart attack in the mid 90’s and got full paid leave for free months. I only had the inconvenience of my company car taken from me, this given to the second in command. Who was a smoker and when I got back to work it stunk! I complained and was sent a new vehicle. With this, and during my sickness, and an a depute travelling almost every day and back about a round trip of 212 miles in a company car from Birmingham UK and back. (he would not stay overnight in digs.) It cost the firm a bomb. Oh to be in England!

Ukiceman: Police. Although I’m not sure they actually give a s£$%, but as you say they have to play by the EU rules I suppose.
