Since the threads about making snuff were brought to the top a while back I’ve been experimenting with making a bit of my own. Many recommended a burr coffee grinder for working down the tobacco, so I started watching for one. Finally found one in my price range! I’m psyched, this will enable me to make much larger batches of snuff; the fun will only get better now. Just thought I’d share my happiness with my forum friends too. These come up frequently on eBay, in case anyone else is in the market. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=150557381659&si=ywUk8OCrNuB%252Bcdi9tDqKj6nLDrg%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT#ht\_500wt\_1034 Dave
A note on burr grinders: there are burr grinders and there are burr grinders. Personally I use mine for espresso and you would be surprised how few burr grinders at the lower end of the price scale will actually grind fine enough to make a decent espresso. Of course for snuff you would want at least this fine-ness of grinding capability if not all the way to Turkish coffee particle size. I don’t know about this one, but typically you are looking for normal minimum retail of around $200, which you can find on line for $140 or sometimes even close to $100. You get some honest critiques here: http://coffeegeek.com/reviews/grinders Let us know how it works out Dave. It may be you got yourself a steal! Dave
Thanks Dave. Looks like I’ll have to wait until it arrives to get a model number and check the critiques. First thing I’ll do though is grind up some nice pipe tobacco and see what I get. Hoping it works!
I know all in all Krups is usually quality stuff…seems likes this is no exception. Just my .02, but i would estimate you got this close to half price. i hope i’m right…looks like a heavy duty piece of equipment…nice find!!
I found your model here http://www.krupsonlinestore.com/product\_detail.asp?T1=KRU+GVX2-12&MENU=grinders&SELECT=&SKW=krugrind $30 savings…not bad at all. i was close on the half price estimate…lol! congrats bro! i love it when someone finds a deal!!
Thanks @FischTix! That explains why I’ve been waiting so long to jump on one; I’ve been looking for a good deal. Seems like most of the examples on eBay are near full price. It was worth waiting for; now I’ll just hope that I get a nice fine grind with it, so I can start experimenting in volume. I’m sure looking forward to it getting here! I’m like a kid at Christmas when it comes to snuff stuff in the mail.
Awesome bro! I’m excited for ya…and of course you know you hafta keep us updated and let us know how well it works out.
Oh that’s a promise! At least as far as I’m successful… I’ve a million ideas based on the make your own threads, and hope to make some great snuff. But I don’t think I’ll ever make anything as good as my all time favorite McChrystal’s Clove! I just had a nice little sniff of that wonder and I’m so happy right now…
lol!! who knows…u might just be the next Roderick!!!
LOL! I’ll let you know if I ever pull one like that! I’m sure I could find a bunch of guinea pigs around here if I started getting into it. We’ll just take it slow and happy for the time being. Just making a tiny bit of snuff in my whirly blade coffee grinder was a big rush for me… I’m going to feel like the big time when I get that burr grinder.
I wonder what kind of grinders the big guys use? Seeing inside a real operation would be really cool. I wonder if we could convince Roderick to do a virtual tour of his facility for us some day. That’d be just plain righteous.
@ddavelarsen, I’ve got exactly the same model and it works like a charm. If you want to, I can tell you how I use mine. No need for you to go trial and error.
my krups spice grinder is amazing. I nice even workings yes it does do that.
This is all good to hear! @PieterClaassen, I’d appreciate any suggestions you a willing to share, always. You’ve been down the path I’m contemplating for a long time and I’d value your input anytime. @bob, I’ve heard about spice grinders but never seen one. Are they similar to coffee grinders, have different settings?
Using a burr grinder is easy and fun. I found a couple of things to watch for though: 1) Your tobacco must be DRY. If it not, the tobacco will stick inside the machine. 2) Do not over fill. The machine will labour and take longer to grind 3) Shake the machine lightly from side to side while grinding to make sure all the tobacco gets taken in. 4) On the front of the machine is a measuring switch for number of cups. This must be set to maximum 5) On the side of the machine is a lever with 17 different settings. This determents the size of the grind. Start at coarse, repeat at half coarse and eventually at fine. While grinding at “fine” hold the lever in position with your fingers, it tends to move towards coarse. 6) If the machine labours, turn this setting towards coarse and let it grind. Set it back to fine and repeat. 7) You can grind the snuff several time in fine mode. 8) If the machine stalls, switch of and remove the upper grinding ring, that’s the gadget which looks like stopper. Clean both rings and continue. The little brush which comes with the machine is good enough for that purpose. 9) If you want real fine snuff, you will still have to use the pantyhose crutch and empty coffee jar method. 10) What makes this machine a joy to use is the bucket up front which collects the ground snuff. It’s easy to pour the snuff back into the machine for another, finer ground. 12) Clean the grinding meganism, which are two toothed rings rotating against each other, from time to time. Oh, and the toacco must be 100% DRY!! You can always dehydrate afterwards if it’s to dry I put my snuff in a glass jar, and put a piece of wet cotton wool in a piece of panty hose. Stretch pantyhose continuing cottowool over mouth of jar and put lid back on. The cotton wool now sits above the snuff without touching it while the lid holds the pantyhose in place. Check every few days and if need be, add some water to the cottonwool. Normally snuff takes 2 to 3 months and sometimes even longer to “ripen”. Therefor patience is the name of the game.
where does one get the bulk baccy to make snuff? please don’t laugh…my mama told me the only stupid question is the one not asked
My mama told me there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
Coffee grinders and spice grinders are the same thing, Only difference is some are used for grinding coffee and others are used for grinding spices!!! You choice. Both work well with tobacco too.
I’m planning on buying some nice-smelling pipe tobacco, unless someone has a better idea. I also had nice success with a cigarette one time and have thought about using bulk cigarette rolling tobacco for snuff. You pros think these will work okay? I once ground up an Acid Blondie which made fine snuff in its own right, without doing anything to it. @PieterClaassen, thanks for the advice. I will follow your recommendations to the letter. Man, I’m so psyched!
@Xander my mama told me stupid is as stupid does but hey, i can snort a 50 ft. line of Dholakia White and you can’t so nanner nanner boo boo! @ddavelarsen Acid makes some dam tasty cigars!!! I bet that would be good!
