Nicotine Patches! ??? I’m not watching on principle.
That’s almost as bad as the Russell Crowe ‘Robin Hood’ where the French invade England in 20th century military landing craft. When the front drops your left wondering why they didn’t go the whole hog and drive up the beaches in tanks. I hate stupid Hollywood historians!
I’m a Robert Downey Jr. fan, but I couldn’t even make it all the way through the first film. I thought it was just horrible, and I’ve never read any of the books. So, for me, it’s not even a comparison issue…I thought it stunk without help from anywhere else.
I don’t think there are too many films that can bear much deconstruction. There are always so many factual errors throughout that anyone not willing to simply sit and be entertained is in for a world of frustration. For me the first SH film was entertaining; I didn’t ask much more from it. Will I see the second? Probably on cable some afternoon when I’m in no condition to do anything constructive.
Speaking of deconstructing films, I think Reservoir Dogs is one of the best, most internally logical movies around. I’ve watched that thing from every angle and still cannot complain. What a great movie! Now watch, somebody here is going to find its one fatal flaw that I’ve missed, and ruin my favorite movie for me forever!
Deconstructing films can be fun, I remember watching Braveheart over a (large) number of beers with an expert on historical arms and armour. He was very vocal!
@nightcap If you are a huge fan of the books then you should know the first movie was pretty true to the books. I haven’t seen the second film but the first was great IMO. I like Guy Ritchie films in general though.
I hate to admit it, but I loved the first movie…YES I prefer the Jeremy Brett series…BUT, i have to say this now and for all to see. ANY, I MEAN ANY victorian, edwardian, never could get em right…no really, never could…basically old school. Not a big fan of modern times. OH yes, electric lights, electricity…indoor plumbing, heat…phones tee vee,the list goes on and on and oh yes on…some more. BUT…I really admire the Amish…NO KIDDING… they make do with basics. I myself love cooking in cast iron skillet, dutch ovens. etc. not a fan of modern stuff…but I love any movie which has old time images and characters I know that this may or may not be true to the books etc. but any time we can see a good flik, why not embrace old time flicks?
Braveheart, loved it…dont know much about the reality of it…however my clan, scottish of course…THE SHAWS…were from nearby,STERLINGSHIRE… near the battle of sterling bridge or whatever. they got deported by the BRITS to northern ireland…hence SCOTS IRISH…where they imigrated to america…DONT YA LOVE HISTORY? damn, so do I…go figure. I was a CONFEDERATE civil war reenactor until the dreaded ‘old soldiers disease’ set in and I could no longer participate due to my being an old poop. by the way…happy holidays to all you good folks…really…enjoy your holiday gin and punch and my fave HOT BUTTERED RUM…yummy…take care my friends.
“… I say film"s” because the 2nd feature, a game of shadows, was release in the U.S today. (shite)"
Thanks for your in-depth review!
I personally liked the first film and am certainly going to watch the second one. Like joesnuffer said, many agree that the Ritchies’s film was more true to the books than any other.
