I’m no big time collector, but yesterday picked up a barely used 9mm semi auto, the Glock 19c. The “c” stands for compensated, and refers to the barrel being ported. This reduces recoil and muzzle lift, promoting a faster followup shot. The piece field strips into four components in less than 30 seconds. Cleaning is a snap. If I ever need to replace the barrel, all I need do is drop in a new one. No threading to get fouled up. The gun can even be dry fired without damaging the mechanism. The sights are great. Altogether I got the gun, two 15 round factory mags and a really decent holster for $400. I think I did ok.
Hi stich, are you going to use the gun to fire snuffbullets up your nose?
I had to carry guns for 20 years. Glocks are fine firearms but I guess the question is what are you going to use it for? You probably got a good buy on it for the price. Is this for self-defense, carrying at work, or just target shooting? Thank God I never had to actually shoot anyone with a handgun but I did have the occasional need to whip the living daylights out of a few turds and was glad to have a solid steel chunk of S&W in my hand when the situation arose. Something I can’t say for the plastic Glock. Bottom line on combat guns is this: handguns suck at stopping humans, you have to bleed them out or destroy the central nervous system to effectively stop them. Rifles and shotguns are much better suited for the purpose. I’m a proponent of the Nike defense system but for those times when I’m jammed in a corner and need to get out, give me a snub nosed .38 revolver that I can shove into someone’s stomach and empty six fast ones. And don’t forget the army of civil and criminal defense lawyers you’ll need. Unless you’re in rural Afghanistan you’ll be facing a grand jury after pulling that trigger. As for dry firing, any center-fire worth a crud should be able to take dry firing. In fact, dry firing should be your daily practice routine. Set a nickle on top of the gun and dry fire it without knocking the coin off. Trigger pull and recoil anticipation are 90% of the technique.
One of the few things I like in this world more than snuff is guns. I’d say you got a pretty good deal on that glock. For me there are many manufacturers I would go with before glock, and many calibers I’d take over 9mm, but to each his own. My little black gun is a Beretta 9000s is .40 S&W.
Nice buy stitch! I do have a few little black guns. I have 1 Glock, model 33 .357 sig.
I also love guns and rifles, grew up on a farm and owned my first BSA airgun at the age of 8. Like all SA citizens in days gone by, I did military training and I loved going to the shooting range. I own 2 handguns, a 7.65 Walther PPK and a 9mm Star with 4 inch barrel. I like the Walther more because it’s a compact little gun. The Star is to big and heavy to carry around and I’m considering getting rid of it.
Pieter, have you ever had to actually use one against another person in actual defense?
Hi Spyro, no, never fired a gun directly at another person but I did did use it twice to make a “private arrest”. I also fired some warning shots to make some basterds run. I carry the Walther in an open holster on my belt whenever I go out at night. In our “wonderful” country carrying a gun is as normal as brushing your teeth. But, if you actually kill someone, you are in for big trouble. One must PROOF that your life was in danger. We have a case here where a guy shot and killed a burglar in his house AFTER the burglar killed the guys brother, in the same house. The guy is up for murder now because he could not proof that the burglar intended to kill him as well.
I carry a Sig Sauer P226 myself. It’s been a very reliable gun thus far for me. Any time I execute a search warrant I’m sure to have a good ole fashioned shotgun along with me. As far as the Glock, right now it is all the rage with new officers coming on the job. About 90% buy the same gun as you did stitch. I had a chance to fire one when I was on vacation this past summer in Florida and I must say it is a very smooth easy to fire pistol no doubt. Enjoy and be safe…
Guns…gotta love em I tried to post a photo but I can’t get it to work. Its a JPG file. Anyone have a clue how to post this? Please whisper me if you can help me with this. thanks
Off Topic ???
Thanks for all the comments and good wishes. Yesterday I went off shooting with two friends in the Tonto National Forest, about two mile from where I live. I love it. The barrel porting really makes a huge difference, and the recoil was much less than my 9x18 Makarov pistol with Hogue grips. As for accuracy, I was hitting sand filled milk jugs at fifty feet very reliably. Next time I’ll pay the range fee and punch some standard targets. There is a rail under the barrel for mounting a tactical light or laser sight. I’d love to try this with a laser dot. Ooooooh. I’ll answer a few questions that came up. I am not in law enforcement, but where I live it would take the sheriff’s deputy a rather long time to respond to a situation. Also neighbors back each other up, and I’d be more likely to call in my pal Frank from across the wash - a former US Army ranger. If one of us ended up dispatching an intruder, the other would swear it was self defense. I have never shot anyone, held anyone at gunpoint or fired warning shots. Let’s hope that will never become necessary. But I was a boy scout, and “be prepared” is still my motto in these matters. Pieter, we have similar laws and customs in Arizona. Unless a concealed carry permit is obtained, firearms must be worn/ kept in plain sight. I ride a motorcycle. When I have a holster on my belt, it’s amazing how much more courteous the other drivers are. Without the gun, I’ve almost been run off the road. I hadn’t thought about using the Glock to pistol whip someone. Fully load, it’s still almost two pounds and I think it would crack all but the thickest skulls. I can accept that trade off with the increased comfort of carrying a lighter gun, faster and steadier aiming. As for stopping power, the 9mm is at the lower end of acceptability as a defensive round. But with jacketed hollow points it is still quite effective and these help prevent over penetration and collateral damage. If the situation calls for it I have rifles and a shotgun too!
My old man has a FN Browning model 1910/22 made for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia by FN(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom\\_of\\_Yugoslavia) 9mm model, looks quite nice indeed. Presonally,I’d like to own an AMT Hardballer Longslide.
Recently picked up a Kimber 45 Stainless II (all ss). Guy I bought it from had fired only one clip before selling it to me. MINT! 400 bucks with case and 2 extra clips!!! I think he was a little intimidated by it. Beautiful gun that is a dream to shoot. @Pieter. I have a Walther PPK in 380 that I will never give up. Nice little piece! Tom
@bakdoor. Nice buy there. You scored.
Thanks a bunch for the info on how to post photos. Ok here we go…
I love my faternal twin Mausers
Nice collection. A lot of side by side & single’s but where’s the over under? Got to love the pump .22, those are fun.
I used to carry a PPK when I worked under cover. I liked it but most of the guys complained about the trigger pull. Seemed 10mm was all the rage when I retired. I don’t even carry a gun anymore. Pepper Spray and a stout walking stick is all I wield. But if some fool enetered my house, I’d smoke em. Enjoy your nice collection. I’ve seen a lot of people get into gun collecting. Personally, I’m just so so sick of cleaning them and lugging them around. I don’t even care to hunt anymore.
Hello Pieter Claassen I recently watched this video about Johannesburg ( are you near there?) it looks a very dangerous place. You can see 1-6 part video on you tube here: video link
Hello Stu90, I’m 1,500km away from Johannesburg and live near Cape Town. But it makes no difference, the whole of South Africa is like that…no law and no order. To call the police is a joke, they just never turn up. When you report a case of burglary, first thing they ask you if this is for insurance purposes or do you want them to investigate!!! If you want a shopping trolley, you just take one. Until someone reports it missing, police do nothing if they see you pushing it down the street, loaded with stolen stuff. We NEVER leave our safety gates open, NEVER. Murder reports are page 3 news. Average of 63 murders PER DAY. People gets killed for a bottle of cheap wine, a rubbish cell phone or, just because “I don’t like you”. And why?? Because there is no death penalty any more. Friend of mine’s mother, 78 years old, got beaten to death after 7 bastards raped her. They then went to the house next door and raped a woman, who was 6 months pregnant, in front of her husband and kids. I was in court with their first appearance. They sat laughing and chatting to each other with no care in the world. It’s a sad, sad world that I live in, master Jack!!!
My local colleagues just shot a guy in my neighbourhood. He was loosing off rounds from an assault rifle, got two in the chest never to rise again.
I’d carry a few guns if I lived where you do Pieter. I have a Sjambok in my collection which I believe originated from your neck of the woods. Only used it once on a stray dog that went after me. I don’t think he’ll bother humans again anytime soon.
I don’t own any firearms anymore. Love going to the range though. Personaly where I live is pretty safe. It seems like a firearm would get me in more trouble then get me out of trouble. Most of any type of danger I’ve run into here has taken my stare to get out of and nothing more. Though I did get charged by a ground hog once.
I use several guns in my collection to keep my parrots protected. I live in a nice secluded community but I have a large investment in these birds and I need to know that if someone tries to steal them that I am prepared to fire upon them if necessary. If it does happen AGAIN I won’t be aiming AT them. I got lucky the last time and didn’t kill the person. However, he was in the hospital for a few weeks. I guess its better to simply shoot over their heads. I hate having to worry about this crap.
I once took care of about 100 cages of diverse parrots, macaws, cocatiels and some others including about a dozen emu in pens. Most were breeding pairs. A few of the parrots would attack me when I put food in their cages. Had to use the water hose to keep them at bay until I closed the door.
I have an umbrella cockatoo, a sun conure, an eclectus, two white bellied caiques and 4 pairs of parrotlets. Parrots is my “other” hobby.
I guess if you shot someone it’s best to make sure it is more important to solve that problem then the possible legal consiquences. Though do parrots eat flesh?? Specficly human flesh. Maybe that would be the best thing to do if you shot someone.
Next time shoot the attorneys as well. I’ll clean the gun for free.
PP ive been curious about your screen name for some time. parrots a hobby or buisiness or both and what kinds do you have? my dad and i used to raise alot of different types of parrots and finches and what not mostly for the joy of it but we also supplied many local petstores until petsmart came in and put them all out of buisiness and they wont buy local for some reason they must have contracts with some big breeders or something. All i have left is a pair of quakers one blue and one green but even those are kind of partly owned by my neighbors cus i had them take care of em when i went to college and they kinda fell in love with em and i dont really have time for em anymore so they stay over there.
I have a breeding and research facility here in Illinois. I mostly breed the Hyacinth macaw. Although I breed all the other large macaws as well. I refuse to sell to the pet stores. Most of my Parrots go to private homes but I do have them in some [well known] vacation destinations that I’m not at liberty to name. Also in zoos, wildlife parks, casinos, training facilities, resorts and such. The parrots I breed go from $1200 to $12,000 each. THATS why I need alot of security devices and stash weapons about. Glad to see some parrot oowners on the forum. I know RobMe was into birds too. wanna buy a bird? lol
oooo i would love me some hyacinth macaws they are one of the most beutiful parrots around in my opinion kind of the gold of the parrot world. “breeding and research facility” are you involved in trying to repopulate populations in the wild or?.. just curious i guess you could say i have a pinch of tree hugger in me. EDIT:o and by the way if i had the money and the time to care for em i most def. would want to buy a (or some) bird. Once a bird lover always a bird lover its just kind of how it works as im sure you know.
Nope just trying to keep some of species from becoming extinct. And trying to make a buck at the same time so they support themselves by makin babies. Yea the Hyacinths are the really expensive ones.
Hyacinths are some of the most attractive parrots, imo, they remind me of 3 year old children. I was shocked when first ‘meeting’ one as they’re about the size of a three yr old too. I definitely couldn’t afford one of them when I bought my first parrot and ended up with my Severe. That was over 20 yrs ago and she’s still going strong, knock wood. I didn’t even know she was a she for about 10 years till she started laying.
hello Pieter, Its a sorry state of affairs so many countries find them selves in now a days, law and order is a joke, criminals with more rights than their victims, pathetic lenient sentences. The law makers sit in their ivory towers surrounded by armed guards out of touch with reality, while the decent honest law abiding man on the street has to face the consequences.
I just got back from the gun shop, and had to resurrect this old thread. When I saw this FN Five-SeveN I couldn’t pass it up. I don’t have the thing yet, I just put it on layaway and will be getting in next week sometime. This little bugger will shoot a 40 grain bullet at about 2,100 fps. I can’t wait to put some ammo through it.
Very nice.
That’s a beaut, leman.
Beautiful piece ya got there. Wicked cartridge too. Congrats.
Unfortunately for me local laws don’t permit me to get a real gun. Permits are reserved for politicians and law enforcement. I would love to get a Vektor 88 (or a Beretta 92FS ) , a Glock and another pistol , i can’t really recall the model but it used .22 ammo , had a high capacity clip and a very long barrel , made specifically for high precision target practice. Can somebody help me out with this ? Although i prefer rifles i can’t say no to a good handgun, i don’t thing there’s any sport more relaxing than target practice. @leman: what’s with the blue tip on the ammo ? Is it to keep the bullet speed high while the ammo is actually hollow point?
Sweet Piece, congratulations.
@Jack - Although I am not 100% certain I do believe the plastic tip is there to improve the ballistics of the hollow point bullet. @DragonHeart - Since this little round takes the standard .224 diameter bullets, it wouldn’t be hard to load up some FMJ. I haven’t found any reloading data for it yet, but I have found some dies for sale. Factory ammo is still pretty expensive for it, but it would be pretty cheap to reload if you find all your brass.
Congrats leman, nice piece you’ll get there.
