Did you hear the news about Robert Mugabe’s library that went up in flames? Lost all three his colour in books of which one was only half way done. Apparently he was in tears.
isn’t Mugabe the president of Zimbobsway (my spelling of it, I hope no one minds.)
I think he’s the ANC SA prez.
@AllanH: Tintin was awesome! Haven’t seen them in forever.
I learned to read with Tintin and Asterix the Gaul. Still read especially Tintins, they’re good fun and great art for kids and adults alike.
I used to buy US comics as a kid purely for the fantastic, weird adverts for sea monkeys, x-ray spex, slim jims and twinkies etc. It was just so off the wall compared to British stuff. I have to admit being slightly disappointed with Twinkies when I finally got to the states though.
I guess you’ve never had a deep-fried Twinkie, then Snuffster!! They’re wonderful!! (and yes, I still carry a pair of X-ray spex in my truck glovebox in case an opportunity arrises…)
I haven’t I must admit! Slim jims were good though the last time I was in NY I couldn’t find twinkies or slim jims. I also had a pair of x-ray spex, which were a pretty good gimick for the cost. I seem to remember they were cardboard and you looked through a bit of feather in the ‘lens’ to give the illusion. I never saw through ladies clothes though unfortunatley.
I’ve been getting back into comics this past year, but my tastes have changed a lot, I’m not really reading classic superhero stuff anymore currently: Rachel Rising__Echo (both byTerry Moore) Orchid by Tom Morello Northlanders__The Massive__DMZ (all three by Brian Wood) Secret by Jonathan Hickman Secret Service by Mark Millar All brilliant stuff! Also still getting the occasional Groo the Wanderer and The Tick but they’re only published intermittantly anymore. I’m going to start collecting Asterix the Gaul soon too. Anybody got any recommendations? You can see my tastes.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one into comics. I have many boxes of them. I was a big x-men and spiderman fan in the early 80’s. My dad had a friend that was a big collector of comics, albums and rock memorabilia. He thought it was cool to see a kid collecting comics and that I was a big Led Zeppelin fan so he set me up with tons of the 10 and 12 cent batman/detective comics from before my time and some cool Zeppelin memorabilia. His Beatles collection must be worth a fortune today. I have a collection of Mad Magazines ranging from #2 to 300?ish that I need to organize, grade and sell soon, along with the first issue of Cracked and Sports Illustrated #1.
@onefortheroad Sergio Aragonés (creator of my beloved Groo) did and still does the marginal art and other bits in Mad and I think only missed one issue in 40 odd years.
I’m more into manga and webcomics. I only read american comics if it’s a one-book collection. I tried getting into them when I was younger but each issue is so short that it’s just annoying.
@snuff_n00b Fillerbunny! Hahahaha…I forgot about that one. Totally classic. Another of my favorites is Sam 'n Max. The games are kind of lame (except the old Lucas Arts One), but the original comics crack me up. Cable/Infinite Crisis/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Green lantern and the punisher
Frank Miller Batman Dark Shadows V For Vendetta Old “Tales” type books Constantine Walking Dead These days I mostly buy trade paperback compilations. More of a reader than a collector.
Young,david Banner Hulk.
Being a fan of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, I got the giant book with all the Dark Tower comics in it. Very cool and beautiful art. Also like the Walking Dead, 30 Days of Night, or any horror related stuff. Archie and Jughead Never been a big superhero fan…
Andy Capp is my all time favorite.
I loved comics as a kid and they were 25 cents when I started and 60 cents when I stopped. The past few years I have got into getting into the reprint stuff that Marvel and DC have been putting out. It is great that I can now read all that great stuff that I missed in the 60’s. Some of my favorites are Conan, Dr. Strange, Sgt Fury, and Fantastic Four. I also dig all the horror and crime stuff plus a lot of the Vertigo stuff like Sandman, Shade, and Hellblazer are cool too.
