I have recently gotten the idea to start making pipes on the lathe, but I don’t think I can make the pipe stem and all my self. I have been searching the web for a site that sells pipe stems, but I haven’t had any luck yet. If anyone knows where I can buy some, I would appreciate it.

Hey Leman, I’ve made a few pipes, it is fun. Very rewarding to smoke a pipe you’ve made yourself. Here’s a place I’ve bought briar and stem material. They also have some stem blanks, I believe. http://www.pipemakers.org/

Very good, thanks for the link.

DT lol, that is hilarious. Tobacco flavored meat smoke. mmmm Seriously though, antler makes a great decorative part, such as a ring or maybe extension or a tamper.

Drunken Planewreck (sic), I’ve seen those pipes. They were lined with clay or meerschaum (?) so as not to scorch the horn. I’ve also smoked a bamboo pipe which was treated in the same way. It worked very well. Can also try a corn cob in there.

My friend John Duran made me a peace pipe a few years back. He’s a full blooded Sioux Indian. His great great grandfather was a big Chief, Hollow Horn Bear. I’ll have to post a pic of what he’s made me. The pipe isn’t heavily decorated but cool regardless. He made me a ceremony necklace with a turkey foot I gave him that I took off a turkey I shot. And a talking stick with the turkey feathers. Interesting quick read. Chief Hollow Horn Bear

Try this place Trout http://ssl.cybersun.com/scripts/webcatalog4disapi.dll/4dcgi/enterstore?ams It is called American pipe supply. I was thinking of carving a pipe at one time and found it.

There ought to be a way to cure the antler to make it suitable for smoking. Either boil it in alcohol or at least do a retort on the internals. (if you melt the antler don’t blame me, my advice is free and worth every penny LOL)

C

Well, the antler is like a big finger nail, so I would think that it would swell up and turn to goo.

S

Try it on some scraps first. I think it will be ok, bartenders usually have most of their fingernails

@snuffbox not the good ones… not the good ones.
