Hello, i hope we have a few pipe smokers here. I like smoking from time to time but i am not allowed to smoke inside my home. I live with 2 other people and i respect their wishes. I like the feeling of having the pipe in my hand, and bringing it to my lips. Not being able to smoke indoors got me thinking, maybe i could try some different methods to flavour my pipes mouthpiece so when im inside i can somewhat enjoy my pipe without smoke. My ideas where, a quick soak in cognac or maybe whiskey, or even some rich tasting vanilla extracs. Then letting the substance dry on it for 1 hour or so, and then tasting it. Has anyone even thought of or tried this, or is it just totally silly? Id love to here from you all. Matthew.
I’ve heard of folks flavoring the bowls or sweetening them, but never the mouth pieces really. It is nice to hold your favorite bowl while you’re sitting around inside-I know what you mean there. I would think snuff would be the perfect substitute while you’re inside. Maybe you’re looking for a way to keep the pipe involved in the process, though, and don’t necessarily care about nicotine intake?
- Indirect answer: Seal off a room / install proper ventilation… 2) Indirect not what you’re asking for answer: If you really want to go go smokeless , why not give snus a try ? It’s kept me off smokes while I’ve had some around and there’s plenty of flavors to choose from. 3)Just popped in my head : shisha/hookah/water pipe tobacco. Pick up a 2$ pipe from somewhere as to not get crud on your smoking pipe , this stuff is sticky given all the mollasses. I’ve found it to be quite pleasant without even lighting up in a hookah , you get nice flavored air , at least with the two apples nakhla. Other flavors are bound to work just as well.
I would want the stem to taste like good English tobacco. I use two big air purifiers and smoke indoors. It takes a little while to clear all the smoke and odour from the room, but it does.
I wouldn’t advise it for a vulcanite stem. Vulcanite oxidizes enough with exposure to air and the little bit of moisture that comes with smoking; wetting it with liquor and letting it dry on its own could ramp up oxidation and produce a lot of Sulfur Dioxide, which is not a taste treat. An acrylic stem, you could try. I’d worry about it getting sticky. A flavorful portion of snus in the lip whilst clenching the pipe might do the trick, perhaps?
My wife would let me smoke my pipes inside in the winter if I wanted to. I have before but I am currently staying away from any burning of tobacco, only being a couple months off the Cigs. I don’t know many folks who don’t like the smell of a pipe.
Thank you all for feedback @ Doc. Thanks for warning me about how the materials may react!
@mcosta I had the same issue. I could not smoke in the house. I was relegated to the backyard where more than half the year it is too cold or too hot. I took up vaping. I can smoke my brains out and my family can sit in the same room as me no problem. I think this can solve you problem. They even make e-pipes and e-cigars… PM me if you want more info.
I been considering purchasing a pipe, I found a Canadian by Peterson that I have found very attractive.
Yes, Ibild Out of my meager collection of pipes, the majority are Peterson. I like a quarter bend with the ‘p-lip’ mouthpiece and a pretty shallow wide bowl. I suppose they are middle of the road as far as pipes go but they smoke very well. (My dream pipes would be one of the Peterson Antique Collection pipes modeled after the original release pipes or a Ser Jacopo Picta Picasso Hawkbill- way out of my price range but one of the prettiest pipes I’ve ever seen.) But purchasing a Peterson is money well spent,IMO.
I like Norwegian pipes and English tobacco. To me the best buy for the money is a standard grade Nording. Whatever brand you get, buy one that has some heft to it. A thick piece of briar smokes better than a thin one. Some web sites (eg. Pipesandcigars.com) tell you the weight of the pipe. That will give you a good indication.
You can use an idea my wife gave me. When I was into buying snuff bottles on E-Bay my and my wife thought I was still buying pipes. She called them snuff pipes. So fill a pipe with a pinch of snuff and stick it up your nose. Or don’t. Silly, get a nice snuff box and wield it around a bit. You can put your pipes on display.
