So Snuffhouse who has tried this stuff? Ill hopefully get my pipe and some tobacco tomorrow. In case you dont know what it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwakh. Any advice with what dokha to start with? Those are the ones that I ordered: Easy Times Kicking It Grandfathers Blend Morning Enjoyment Lets Go I also ordered a Kisaru and some tobacco for it. Heh seems like I really do have to try every form of tobacco at least once.

P

I want to try this. I also want to try making snuff out of it.

G

that is also a very good idea, thats the site where I got the stuff from forgot the link in the first post http://medwakh.com/

C

It is on my list.

T

I have been smoking dohka for a little over a year now. The nice dreams and lets go are my favorites. Let me give a little advise i had to learn though, just because a dohka is labeled hot warm or cool, that is not the nicotine content. Just how harsh it is. A lot of the warm dohkas are a lot stronger in nicotine than the hots. I have also made snuff from dohka, kizami (japanese tobacco)and isfahini tobacco. They are pretty good. The isfahani I have is the best i have made so far.

T

@goldenboy Do take it easy the first few times though if you are not a heavy smoker or dipper. A lot of people get put off by the buzz and dont get to enjoy the dohka very long due to over use the first few times

C

It is certainly something I would like to try down the road. @thendrix65804: is the tobacco wet or dry, leafy or chunky?

T

@cstokes4 the dokha’s are usually a little moist and finely ground. They almost look lie a ground spice they are so fine. In fact im going to go have some now!

P

whats the best place to get these in the UK? I’d also like to get hold of an ultra long Korean pipe.

T

I dont know if he ships to the U.K. specificly but I order from http://www.medwakh.com/Shopping\\_Cart.html I believe you can also get the asian pipe you are looking for. It sounds like you want a kirasu. He also carries kizam tobacco for your kirasu.

T

Dang it I never have figure out how to prevent or cancel a double post. Im new to forums.

B

It usually deletes itself when you refresh the page

G

bassem at http://www.medwakh.com is a really nice guy. He ships international just hit him up at international_orders@medwakh.com. My stuff sadly hasnt arrived yet so him hoping for tomorrow

G

so i just recived my package with some generous stuff thrown in for free and just smoked my first bowl. Did a shisha style inhale and nearly died. then had some cigarette like drag and that was much better. quite nice but im not blown away yet.

J

Bump

M

Thank’s Juxtaposer!

Can’t believe I might aquire(sp?) another tobacco form! But it’s so damn tempting!

J

Fortunately I have never smoked cigarettes so the temptation for me is minimal. I am interested in what herbs, spices and barks are traditionally used in these mixes. The tobacco itself appears to be of the Oriental variety which is not color cured. N. Rustica may also be used in Dokha. I would be interested to know. The claim that Dokha tobacco is stronger is certainly biased by the way that it is used. Any tobacco smoked in that manner will give you the “buzz” that is mentioned. The Japanese version of this type of smoking uses plain Burley which is very thinly shagged. It seems the illegality of tobacco is what caused the spicing for purposes of concealing the tobacco. I have tried Thuoc Lao which is yet another smoke of similar style. But not being a smoker I could not fully appreciate it. I suppose if I filled the dieu cay with water (I did make one myself) it would be more enjoyable. I have smoked snuff from a bong and imagine this as similar to this type of smoking. I have enjoyed hookah smoking and it seems the best method except for the inconvenience (portability, set up, etc.).

M

Well if I get hooked up I could try to give a bit of a review, to compare it with other smoking tobaccos, but I probably wouldn’t be the first.

Got some cardomom shisha waiting for the Springtime

D

Im actually a pretty regular Dokha smoker… Having sampled enough of a range of harshness’ and buzz levels, as well as flavors that i do have a few favorites. I’ve got a few different medwakh’s traditional and non… as well as a matching chanta (Dokha container) that goes with one of my medwakhs. All the dokha’s I’ve tried thus far I have purchased from Medwakh.com, and Bassem is def the #1 Vendor in the US. If you contact him, via his email, with what kinda of tobaccos you enjoy, and order one of his starter kits which I think sells for about 23 bucks, plus shipping…He’ll actually recommend some blends that you’ll likely enjoy… Also, he is notoriously known for sending some nice freebies.
My personal Favorites are Bassem’s Blend, Yousef Rida hot, Kareemi Hot, Grey Wizard, Dunadain’s Sweet Galenas, and Snipers Blend.  but there are a huge selection of flavors and styles.

M

I’ll have to contact Basem then, I could use a good newbie variety pack.

How do you feel about a solid aluminum medwakh vs a wood and metal unit? Do the aluminum ones get hot quickly, or are they ok after a bowl or two? They just sound pretty durable.

Also, have you tried any of the Nirvana line?

D

The starter kit actually comes with a nice small wooden medwakh of decent quality… also a pack of pipe cleaners… so you can try it first and see if you like ir before investing in a higher end one.

@micheltn, Have you try medwakh.com’s new Moassel flavored line? Pick the cold to warms and you don’t get that feeling… at least I didn’t.

M

@Mr. O: Go for the wooden medwakhs.  Yes, metal ones get hot quickly and then deliver an uncomfortably hot smoke.  The wooden ones will need to be replaced after continued use, though their lifespan can be greatly increased with regular cleaning (generally after every smoke).  Dokha smoking creates copious amounts of tar, hence the filter at the end of the pipe, this will build up quickly and if not removed will split your medwakh and start to seep on the surface.

There are some brands of dokha I have not tried yet, but I have had the dokha’s from medwakh.com and most of the Nirvana line.  My shop got a little over a dozen samples of Nirvana a couple of months ago to see if we wanted to carry them.  They now sit on a shelf and are only smoked by people who come in begging for free dokha.  No one likes them.  I can barely give them away.  Granted, we only received their flavored varieties, perhaps their  plainer options (there may only be one) are more palatable. On top of this rather unfavorable review of the nirvana dokha itself, the marketing strategies they employ are poorly conceived.  Almost all of the names are tasteless jokes about the late singer from the band of the same name, the descriptions of their website of the dokhas are everything but helpful and informative and you can’t help but feel like an highschooler who still thinks it’s cool to brag about how trashed you got last weekend.  Perhaps I’m getting too boring in my old age but their marketing alone turns me off from their product.

The Dokha’s from medwakh.com come with a little class and a lot more variety.  Granted I don’t like them all, but that’s why Bassem has so much variety; so you find one you do like.  Nice Dreams, Mokh Matohn, Indihash al Sabah, Indihash al Kobra & Let’s Go are without a doubt the best sellers at my shop.  These are mostly plainer unflavored varieties in the warm range with a satisfying dose of nicotine.  In the flavored ranges I recommend Samug’s Breath (grape), Sn1p3r’s Blend (a light double apple flavor), Old Toby (vanilla), Lothlorien (bubble gum, it sounds odd at first but it is quite tasty in fact) & Grey Wizard (an ambiguous fruit melange).

I hope some of this helps newcomers to dokha.

B

no mr nose that has nothing to do with age. That has to do with not being a tasteless asshat. Yeah their marketing is super lame.

M

Thank’s for the input Mr Nose! Yeah I am looking for mostly plain dokhas, and some with subtle and/or elegant-mysterious (for lack of better term), flavors. The African~ sounds promising, or something floral, smoothly spicy, or herbal. Maybe one or two fruits. Probably some from each heat level. I’ll remember your suggestions too…

M

@Mr. O: The North African is the favorite of one of my employees.  If you’re looking for something floral I’d suggest the Zahrat Al Sara’a.  It’s got a decent kick of rose with some nice spicy undertones.  The plain Rose flavored one is too overwhelming to be very enjoyable, in my opinion.

M

Thank’s fer the info!  Its seems that at least with the shisha, the apple is the most popular- at least they said so at a couple of places, a shop and a hooka cafe. The vanilla sounds good, if it’s not super sweet. I’m still in the contemplation phase, as a few cigs a day still give me some irritation. So if I get started with the dokha it’ll probably be an occasional thing, maybe just a little on the weekend, or perhaps a couple times a day. Gotta sleep on it- but if I don’t sink too much money into it, I wouldn’t need to do it all the time…

Also thinking of getting a kiseru(sp?), as that’s been a latent desire for quite some time, again the metal(probably brass) appeals. I would choose the longer one, otherwise probably a bamboo…

M

Now that I think about it, an occasional puff may be better than a few strong handrolled cigs per day. Awfull tempting, maybe it’s worth buying a kit.

M

Yeah, thank’s! He’s the one I’ll go to if and when I’m ready to buy one!

dokha.net seems to lead to the same medwakh.com website, curious…

Z

Curse you people! I now have a new tobacco product on the way.

H

grrrr…I would love to try dohka, but I gave up cigs because my asthma was getting worse and worse. No doubt one hit of a medwakh and I’d be rushing to my inhaler.

D

Its definitely a possibility… Guess that would depend on what your reactants are… Dokha and medwakh is definitely NOT for everyone… But I do enjoy it if pretty often…

H

I starting when I was 14, dude. A friend of mine offered me one after we finished a bowl of MJ, and it seemed like a great idea when she said “The menthol will feel awesome to your throat now, dude.” Well, she was right, and I was smoking a pack a day by the time I was 16. Now I’m 21 and wishing I’d never picked 'em up. Better than waiting till I am 40 or something though, I guess. Moral of the story, don’t do drugs, kids. They lead to even worse things, like cigarettes.

D

Ok… for those of you looking to try some dokha… NOW IS YOUR CHANCE… turns out I got an email from Bassem, and its double dokha days…
This is copied from the email I got today…

DDD starts now and runs through
Sunday, the 25th of this month.

Any size dokha you buy, any amount, and we’ll double it at no extra charge. Here’s a couple simple answers to the questions that we always get during DDD:

  1. Yes, you can substitute a different blend for your matching bottle, you don’t have to order 2 bottles of the same dokha. Just
let us know what you’d like in the comment section on the checkout page.

  2. Yes, DDD applies to our starter and premium kits. Order
a kit with 4, 8, or 12 sample size dokhas, and we’ll double them for you. Again, just let us know your choices in the comment section on the check
    out page.

  3. What about the incredibly rare and expensive Malaki Saffron dokha? We will double it if you order it, but sorry, you can’t request it as a matching blend.

  4. Man, I just ordered yesterday, right before your sale started! Can I get you to match what I ordered yesterday? We already did! We always double all the orders that come in 3 days previous to the start of DDD, because it just seems like the fair thing to do…

Hope this helps ya get a good start!

T

I so badly want to try Dokha and Midwak! Also a Kiseru with some Koiki Kizami!

G

D you always get dizzy from midwakh ? I nearly fell on the floor !

Z

Mine should be here tomorrow. Happy Dance.

D

@ Gax… Very often, yes… I prefer to be firmly seated when smoking dokha, especially since my main smoke, Yousef Rida Hot, has one solidly strong nic kick.

G

I hear there are types that relax you. Ever had any of those ? Do they relax the muscles ?

M

Wondering what’s the shelf life of dokha? Either in a baggie, or a jar.

D

I find most dokha blends that have a buzz rating greater then 3 stars to be relaxing… Its when you start hitting dokhas that are 7+ stars that will definitely floor you if you don’t have a solid nic tolerance…
I don’t know officially about shelf life, but I’ve stored sample baggies for as long as a month with no diminishing of quality. The Bottles do tend to keep longer though. I did smoke a 1/4 large bottle full of year old Yousef Rida warm, that seemed not too bad compared to fresh Yousef Rida warm.

M

Hmmm, I was going to get the 12 bag sampler… maybe I should go for small bottles, or perhaps just empty the sample bags into small apothecary jars maybe 2 dram sized or so. How big are the sample baggies anyways, I’m imagining 2-4 grams maybe?

Z

Define shelf life. If you mean “flavors” they will diminish over time just like spices. If you mean tobacco, as long as it’s stored properly, a loooong time. Since most of the power is from nicotine, they should have staying power in that respect.

D

I never actually weighed out a bag of dokha, and usually I bought in bottles… (little hint: two small bottles has more dokha then one medium)
The sample baggies are about an inch by an inch… but they are usually stuffed so tight that they just barely close… decanting them in small bottles would be a great idea for longer term storage.

M

Zanaspus I figure I’d have to include the flavors, although I’d buy unflavored ones quite a bit too.

darkly Thank’s for the tip, I’ll remember that! I may have to shop for small bottles then.

Z

Having been enjoying this for a day. I advise anyone who is on the fence about trying it to definitely try it. It’s like the buzz you get from going hard on Rooster for an hour times 20. I got a few warms. Sniper’s is my favorite taste, and Majnoon Wasat is my favorite buzz. Bassem rocks! I’m going to order more soon and leave some choosing up to him.

D

If you really looking for a head kick from the dokha… try Hani’s Tharib Rass… It translates loosely to Head Kick…Stuff darn near floored me. Lol… I loved snipers blends… also recommed Bassem’s Blend if you haven’t tried it.

S

I’m looking to pick up one of these, but I’ve got a question: what’s the aroma like? i.e. if I smoke in my apartment, will it smell like cigs or cigars?

J

According to its history, dokha is as clandestine a smoking experience as you can get. But I wouldn’t know.

D

@SnuffinClown… Depends on what blend you are smoking… some carry pretty much no discernable scent at all… while others have a stronger floral or almost cooked fruit scent. As, Juxtaposer stated, one of the main reasons for this growing in popularity during the Ottoman empires tobacco ban was that it was 1) easy to conceal 2) cheap to toss, if needed and 3) was such a small quantity of tobacco and “second” hand smoke that it was more often then not, undetectable, or if by chance it was smelled, it would be mistaken for burning incense, instead of tobacco smoke.

Z

Exactly what darkly said. My wife, who is a cigarette smoker say the unflavored ones carry less of a scent than a cigarette, and the flavored ones smell like burning poo (her words)

M

Ok I just ordered a medwakh and I have a question. I know how they are usually(?) smoked with a disposable cigarette filter tip, but I wonder if there’s any reason that I couldn’t use one of the reusable cigarette filter tip-holders, the ones that you simply pull apart and rinse or  wipe down the inside part then reassemble before using again? I’ve found many such on ebay and amazon, and many are available for $3-10 plus free or quite cheap shipping.

D

If you got the kit, it’ll come with Biopipe or Turbo tips… they are three piece plastic deals and can also be rinsed out in hot water… Personally, I take out the tiny filtering thingy anyway, cause all I want is to keep the dokha outta my mouth. Any filter system that’ll fit on the end of you medwakh will work just fine. My favorite tips are the old-school deni-tips… no filter at all in those… just a buncha silica balls in the tip that absorb excessive moisture without restriction.

M

Thank’s for the advice! I asked Bassem and he said there should be no reason not to- and I can get a pretty neat one for about $5/6 with shipping included. I confess that part of my motivation is that some look pretty neat, there’s one that’s all silver with black bit- looks like it’s actually part of a silver adorned medwakh!

D

I have to agree… there is a tip that is pretty much clear but with brass baffles that looks just epic on my custom Shanaku Black walnut medwakh, considering its fitted with bronze mouthtip collar and bowl… I have to get another one soon, I broke the one I had… *shrugs* lol

M

(confession) I couldn’t buy just one. I got three different ones from the same company “uxell” that makes a bunch of them. But it’s not too bad it all added up to $16 and some change S&H included. The only downside is that I have to wait a couple/few weeks to show up from, I think it was Hong Kong. I suppose it’s worth it for a bargain. If anyone wants to check em out I just went onto Amazon and searched “Cigarette holder filter”- some cool stuff there!

M

Just got the medwakh(medwahk?) kit in the mail. Wonder what I should try first, maybe the Jousef Rida cold, or the Blue Kiss, most of mine are in the warm range anyways- and I smoke strong non-filter ciggies so I’m guessing a warm wouldn’t be too much?

D

Dokha does tend to be a acquired taste kinda like wine, pipe tobacco, and snuff for that matter… I’d recommend you try Blue Kiss out first… its a very simple tasty flavor, and easy one to get… Yousef Rida, is a more natural blend, so try those two for a while and see how that works for you.

M

OK, thank’s for the advice! I smoked the kiseru I got with it too, real nice, but it seems a little tricky to work with the hair-thin tobacco.

H

If it helps, you are supposed to roll the kiseru tobacco up into a ball to put into the pipe. Assuming you didn’t already know that, anyway. On a side note, are you supposed to inhale a kiseru?

M

I heard that, but there was a tendency for it to kind of disintegrate when I tried to do so. Now I’m thinking “just get it into the bowl without sprinkling it everywhere”. I always was under the impression that one does inhale, so I did, and it was good. It has occurred to me to rehydrate it a bit, but it seems I’ll have to figure the best way to do so- seems trickier than with pipe/cig tobacco if you don’t want to destroy the texture in the process.

H

There is always the mighty Youtube for help in these matters lol.

M

Yes, yes… I don’t know why I’m a little adverse to going to youtube for instructions for stuff- but it may be a good idea- sometimes I’m a bit irrational, go figure right?

But back to topic, I’ve rehydrated pipe tobacco quite a few times (different tins ).  but the, again what’s it called? Koiki~ is so thin and fragile, and it comes packed in paper and cardboard (at least this type), so I’d think it ill advised to just throw a few drops of water or a pouch button in there. I guess one should move it into glass first.

J

Just put the tobacco and a cup of water in the same container.

M

Yeah, yer probably right. Think I’ll have to shop for tupperware, for lack of a suitable container on hand.

Btw, just had my first bowl of Jousef Rida cold. I’m pleasantly suprised- and it’s a clean buzz too! I may be converted now!

J

Just put them on the counter and cover them up with something.

M

OK a huge ziplock bag and a damp washcloth, should work…

Just tried the “Blue Kiss”, mighty tasty!

J

It puts the distilled water on the washcloth!

M

Or else it gets the hose again? Couldn’t think of anything better…

D

PUT THE F$!@G DISTILLED WATER ON THE WASHCLOTH!!!

One of my favorite scenes from that movie.  That and the part where Anthony Hopkins is talking about eating his friend and he drank a nice chianti.  *slurp slurp slurp*

M

A tip for the Kiseru smokers out there.  If you wet your fingers before you roll/ball your koiki you will have better luck getting it into the kiseru bowl and getting the smoked massed out of it afterwards.  It also gives it better flavor.  It is also quite popular to smoke standard rolling tobacco out of a kiseru in lieu of genuine koiki; it is much cheaper and still quite tasty if you are smoking quality ryo tobacco.  In general I view the process of cleaning and preparing my Kiseru for smoking as part of the experience.  I still spend about a much time smoking my Kiseru as I would smoking a cigarette but a lot of that time is preparation time and I spend less time actually smoking though my satisfaction is about the same.  Often the ritual gives you more satisfaction as well as the calming factor more so than the excess nicotine.  Happy Smoking!

M

Thank’s! Will try that.  After a night rehydrating the koiki it rolls into a ball much better. Yeah after doing the ritual with a briar etc I don’t mind cleaning a pipe at all. Now it makes me think of buying one twice the size (12" or so)! I like mine, but I always pictured them larger from seeing photos some time ago.

M

Groovin’ on the “Blue Kiss” again…

D

Good stuff… huh?

M

Oh yeah! Probably one of the best flavored smoking tobaccos I’ve had! Have you tried the Blueberry? Intrigued by that and the Samugh’s(misspelled I’m sure)Grape, next time I’m sure…

D

If you looking for a out of the world flavored smoke… Try snipers blend… Apples with a hint of Aniseed. Very Tasty!

M

I’ll remember that! It seems the apple(or double apple) flavor shisha tobaccos are very popular, but I’m not sure how similar they are. What about that chocolate-orange, vanilla-mint, rose-mint? Idk, alot of them are intrigueing(sp)…

D

Indeed… and if you happen to like clove… vanilla clove is highly enjoyed… and if you happen to remember the old school 10-to-a-pack dhjarim’s (the real ones from indonesia)  and enjoy that strong clove hit… Kretik kick is VERY similar.

M

Yeah, it’s kind of funny how I was searching for those paticular kreteks for some years- the ones in the single layer tin right? For me I’d lean towards the van/mint, I don’t like to inhale clove personally, but that and there was one with basil, mint and something else that sounds really good. I think next time I’ll go batshit-nuts on the sampler bags!

Btw, do you usually use a spoon to load yer medwakh bowl?

H

aaawww man, don’t say that about Djarums…you make me sad…They can say all they want but Djarums just don’t taste anywhere near as good as they used to. I just had to stop buying them because every pack was more dissappointing than the last.

M

What can I say, I miss the good ones too. I think it was probably when they seemed to only sell the filters that something changed. At one point I even found a RYO Kretek tobacco that was actually good. Maybe someone could dig up a recipe so we could make our own. I’m not even confident one can find any in the US anymore, I think now it’s just “clove cigarillos”. Makes me sad too.

J

@mr.o  the us banned flavoured cigarettes apart from menthol  so djarum started calling them

cigarillos as a way around the ban  :)  better than nothing i guess

H

yeah, only when they changed the wrapping they changed the flavor.

M

Yeah, I heard about that, just looked it up last night to confirm I had once bought a pack of Djarum cigarillos ok I guess- but yeah not the same. Not to spout politics- so I’ll just say I hope someone will overturn that law, or at least revise it to be reasonable. How’s that for walking up to the line without crossing it…
