I’ve noticed a few avatars here on snuffhouse and I was curious as to who played here! I’ve been a bassplayer for 16 years. I also play guitar, all sorts of percussion, trumpet, etc. I love all music except country. I’m not into that so much. Which is funny because I live in Nashville! I was in a rock/funk band a few years ago we opened up for the Red Hot Chilli peppers and Primus. Also the band The Urge and Nada Surf. Good times I don’t play out as much these days. I’m actually looking for a band here in Tennessee. What about everyone here? Drop a line whether you play gigs every weekend or pick up a 6 string here and there- what do ya do?
I play trombone, used to play in a bar band called The Porters. We mostly played Motown and soul classics. Claim to fame, we once opened for Fishbone. All many moons ago…aside from that, I played in a local community college jazz band for 9 years, but haven’t had much time to play ever since I got married and had young’uns…
I primarily play bass, but have a whole bunch of instruments that I play equally as bad. Lately I’ve been glued to the Juno-60 as I just got it repaired. Never played a gig with a band but some of my friends I jam with are in bands.
toffeenose is the famous musician around here
I play the fiddle and the mandolin…not too much of either as I had to quit fiddle for a couple of years due to some nasty tendon injuries. Just getting back into it now, and the mandolin is a way of getting the tunes back under my fingers without dealing with the various postures/techniques involved in fiddling, which I still can’t manage for too long without pain.
@jpsks: Shhh! LOL! I have been known to play a bit of guitar here and there, yes.
bassist. Also have some electronic tracks kicking around that seem to wow a few people every now and again.
Guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, glockenspiel, melodica, drums, vocals, ocarina, kazoo, mandolin, recorder, jews harp, triangle. Without a doubt, the triangle is the hardest thing to play. And I’m not joking!!
lol @henwrench @toffeenose Are you in a band? Spill the beans already! We’re all friends here… now that the King of Garnish is gone
I play piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, musical saw, saxophones, percussion, etc.
I’m a musician, and have a band and many music projects. My main band is ASTRUM, we have our 2nd full length CD coming out soon: http://www.myspace.com/themightyastrum My solo project is KOSMOKRATER, just released it’s 4th CD recently: http://www.myspace.com/kosmokratermusic And I have a project I do with a buddy called INFERNITI, with a CD just released: http://www.myspace.com/inferniti I also have been working on some electro stuff, and that, along with a bunch of other stuff I have done is on: http://www.youtube.com/astrum502 I do mainly metal punk stuff.
No shit! @tom502 we might get along bud What do you play? I dunno what you look like so its hard to pick you out in the pix… I love metal \\m/
http://thepastyproletariat.bandcamp.com this is my lo-fi folk music project. I love metal too, but mostly sludge/grind and thrash.
I play guitar, bass, and do the vocals, mainly. On ASTRUM recordings, the last CD, I did bass and vocals. On Kosmokrater I do it all, on Inferniti I do the music and my buddy does vocals. And I play keyboard too, as I do all the music on my Machine Dreams electro project. I also do the electronic percussion on Inferniti, Kosmo, and Machine Dreams.
Jack of many, master of none, but most comfy with guitar. I’ve composed for theater, jingles, original projects. I haven’t played out for a few years, and really don’t miss it. Genre-hopper.
really? that’s what I miss most- live shows! so much energy. its a whole other addiction…
I play bass, acoustic and electric (just sold my electric though). I used to play in a band, played at a bar downtown quite a bit. A band Stutterfly from the city here wanted to buy one of our songs but then they broke up =( I was going to buy a nice Fender Precision bass but I guess not
@transistor Yeah, probably a combination of age and getting sober. The equipment was getting heavier, and it was always raining. Plus, I’m not the gregarious type. The kick I get out of hearing my stuff during a play is really satisfying.
I play bass. I’ve been playing for about 13years. I’m a Precision bass kind of guy.
i play acoutsic guitar, an old beater Takamine, crossing my fingers for a beater strat or epiphone and some effect pedals for my bday coming up … but mostly fireside riots and have tried open mics … a song or two … and have strummed along with buddies who have played around town. could form some type of ramshackle snuff supergroup … big and messy like broken social scene. ha!
I’ll recommend a couple pedals that IMO they are ‘must haves’- Boss Rc-2 Looper/Delay (red pedal)- you can layer so many parts and solo on top of it. Or program a beat with it with accompanyment and all of the above. AWESOME pedal. worth $150 usd or so. I’m sure you could find a used one for less… as a bassist I’m in love with this thing. Big muff distortion pedal. Great low end and sustain. The best IMO Boss DD-7 Digital Delay. It has reverb and delay, with a tap tempo. Perfect little pedal. Just those three little pedals completely remove the need for any midi pedal boards and the like. They’re great and work on many instruments, not just guitar.
I don’t what or why, maybe it’s my age, or my early punk influence, but I just never cared about brand names, and I don’t connect with all the electronic gadgets and such. Sure, they are all great, and make a great sound, but for me, it’s very minimal, I just want something that can bash out the noise.
@transistor … absolutely, any delay is on my list, fo-sho. I am looking at mixing software too … any thoughts? @tom502 … i am with you as well … i like being open to both … but throw down some ramones, sex pistols, clash or even newer bands today like johnny foreigner, cymbals eat guitar … or something messy like the pogues … raw, only the instruments, straight ahead roll and in your face! i can dig on just about anything if i can find the precision, emotion or artistry in the genre …
ha ha yeah I don’t care about brand names on pedals- I want something that WORKS well. I mean- distortion and delay/reverb are very basic effects. That is if he’s interested in pedals…
sh*t … i will just take any ole electric with a whammy/wah-wah bar!
I have an old medium size Peavy amp, my guitar I’ve had forever, is a Cruise, which I never heard of. I have one distortion pedal called Metal Plus by Arion, a DrRhythm Boss little drum machine, an old Fostech 4-track cassette recorder, a Concertmate keyboard, all my stuff is going on 20 yrs old. I did buy a new bass recently, as the one I had forever, a Harmony brand, was just too old and had shorts in it, so I got a nice, but inexpensive Dean bass, new for $130 something. And I have some Optimus microphone. I don’t use the 4-track anymore, except as a go-between and I use the free program called Audacity to record at home.
@tom502 … 4 track would elicit great wonder and awe these days … you should lay all your recordings down with that and you’d be huge … anything old is new again. Audacity suits your needs then?
To be honest- any kind of multitrack recorder will work for you. Try to get one with a built in hard drive. I use Pro tools software but you can always use something like Cubase… or Sound Forge, etc.
The Audacity works fine to me. I’ve made many albums using it. The 4-track is just too limited now, now that I like and often use more than just 4 tracks, and I get a better sound with the Audacity.
thanks fellas … not that i am looking to put out anything for the masses … just curious to see what i can do to pass the time besides snuff … and sucking at golf.
I play just about everything but the drum kit. Mostly known for bass and keys in the area. Sometimes both at the same time. I have managed at times to turn it into a decent side income. Depends on the month. Ken
@debbie do you still play in a band nowadays? I’ll not let your secret out of your chart success but I used to love your former band. Stefan
Depending on your OS some other good alternatives to Audacity are Ardour and Reaper. Personally I use Ardour (Linux user). I like Audacity and use it as well. Audacity, however, is more designed as an audio editor (with multitrack capabilities, granted) but it shines in editing audio, not dealing with quick tracking and mixing of recording sessions. That is where Ardour for example shines. Ken
I already asked her. I didn’t get a reply. I don’t think I will, either…
Her band was pretty famous in England in the mid nineties. Stefan
@walrus1985 … can you give us a genre?
A few lyrics for ya @transistor. “I want to do great things, don’t want to compromise, I want to know what love is, I want to know everything.” @snuffbrant Indie/Britpop Stefan
@walrus1985 … i’m down now. cool …
Well that was easy to figure out. But I won’t tell Toffenose. By the way wasn’t she in 6 bands since the 90s. edm
I’m working on doing a cover version of the Pistol’s Pretty Vacant. I’ll make a youtube of it tomorrow.
I thought of getting Debbie up here for a gig at my local. But I don’t think they would pay her even the travelling experiences.
Hope this works. I play guitar, bass and drums. Also learning the banjo. But, I also dable in skratching. Those of you that are not into skratching records may not like it, but it does require skill. http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=10150458799935591
So cool! Such talent, @toffeenose http://dickonedwards.co.uk/diary/index.php/archive/tag/london/ scroll down you’ll find it
@nightcap Oh of course! I took my run at DJing too- not really DJing but scratching some technics- takes lots of rhythm and definitely a knowledge of electronics and an ear for music/beats. A bit of sound engineering always helps, too
@nightcap - couldn’t open from FB - be interested in seeing the video, though.
I play guitar, bass, djembe, and harmonica.
I do vocals, didgeridoo, and am starting to dabble with the musical saw. Used to play guitar, but stopped shortly after my last public performance. I played the guitar accompaniment for a song my high school’s chorus did, but the chorus teacher was a coked up git who ran through a 14 minute long medley in 8 minutes at the concert, and then told me off after the show for “playing horribly and not being able to keep up.” The guitar’s been languishing ever since. I do have a project starting up this summer with some friends. We’re drawing influence from post-rock, psych (mostly Japanese stuff and groups like Popol Vuh), shoegaze and drone, and we’re planning on putting out a demo around the end of the summer. Probably going to be a bit long for most people’s tastes, though, as we’ve only got one song in mind so far, and it’s planned to run around to 90-120 minute mark. Still, if it actually gets done and sounds like something anyone would like, I’ll post again in here when we’ve finished with it. I don’t know if we’ll really be able to do live shows unless we get something of a name in the area though. Aside from the long songs we’re looking to do, the band is currently running around 9 people, which is a bit much for most pub stages.
@shikitohno … rarely do i see anyone love “shoegaze” … done so well, it can be surreal … nothing speaks to it more than My Bloody Valentine … oh how I lament that they stopped at “Loveless” … but talk about a musical pioneer … Shields’ guitar adventures are/were seminal. I keep waiting … hearing rumors of their comeback/reunion/new releases … but alas, they fall short. false positives.
@shikitohno who doesn’t play the didg? Heck I even saw a little kid playing didg a few days ago.
Oh and no one ever checks it out but some of my music is on myspace (even though I neglect that page and rarely even check it.) The project is called “Propaganda through Propagation”.
@bob … hit us with the link to myspace … i’d like to check it out … and a search didn’t yield results.
Being an old punk now, here are two songs I did not too long ago: This was my sorta CRASS inspired song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQO2\\_NibNVY Any my DISCHARGE inspired song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4gETT-s42M Also very much an old Gary Numan fan, I recently tried my hand with electro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw2CcnHtUZQ&feature=related and: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig1FP4TXhZM&feature=related
hey now! @tom502 … two things came to mind for the Discharge and Crass inspired tunes … “slappin’ duh bass, mon, just slappin’ duh bass…” your bass on the crass tune was good. but the second thing that came to mind is “when the steel screams” is a very good song … well done, man. love the vocal effects too. i really think your electro stuff is quite good. thanks for posting.
Thanks. I am totally new to electro, and just pulled out my keyboard, and When the Steel Screams was my 2nd ever attempt(the first was was the same song but I didn’t like how it came out), and Electrogasm was my 3rd, and these were both 1st takes played right through with no loops or programming. I’m old school like that.
the two sounds, i.e. your punk songs in contrast to your electronic tunes … seems natural to me … to wit, warsaw turning into joy division then reinventing themselves post ian into one of my all time fave bands, new order.
Well I consider myself a drummer, but I have been learning the bass for way too long and the have picked up the banjo the last 3 months thanks to my twin brother who is my roomate. Also if there is enough booze i have been known to rock the mic every now and then lmao @TheBoggart man i realy wanna learn to play mandolin I think it is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in the world
As a musican/songwriter, I just like writing songs and recording them. And I like to share them, Often it’s 1st take stuff, and not with a full band, but I just like to make stuff. If anyone else does this please share. Here is a song with my full band ASTRUM, from our 1st CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMPZOZGy-ag And a song from my 2011 KOSMOKRATER CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0KmEUOMksU OK, I don’t wanna make you all hate me, so I’ll refrain from posting more, but you can find the rest of my stuff online with the links I gave earlier.
That UFO footage is pretty decent, Tom. And is that woman someone important or fit into the song in some ways?.
Bart, yes, Maria Orsic, she is part of the Vril group that channeled the extraterrestrials from the Aldebaran star system and recieved the saucer and time machine plans for the 3rd Reich.
You know, David Bowie didn’t really believe in the Spiders from Mars. HEHEHEHEHE Ken
