Off topic but could you folks who have BlueRay Players enlighten me on whether or not you can actually play regular DVD movies in them also? I’m going to upgrade but dont want to lose my valued DVD collection also. Thanks.
yes you can on all the players ive used, I have the playstation 3 that has a bray player and I watch dvds in it all the time.
Thanks Earth… actually that’s what I was leaning towards purchasing so that answer was perfect! Thank you! Now to change it up again… you think the PS3 slim is better than the 360? I like that the online multiplayer is free with Sony so right now that and the BlueRay player is pushing me toward the PS3. Any thoughts?
Not only will a PS3 play DVD and bluray it will play AVI, MPG and just about any other video format so you can download videos from the internet and play them on the PS3 without having to convert them
yw snuff I think the ps3 is just an overall better system,… better graphics, better support, free online play, its just a great value. Yet I suppose it depends on the game library and what you enjoy, (I myself being a metal gear solid fan since 1999) the ps3 that the obvious choice. Also the ps3 online runs just as well and the xbox360s and you dont have to pay for anything other than your Internet connection, and if you do choose to pay for playstationPlus, you’ll be rewarded with tons of discounts and goodness. Hope that helps, and happy gaming!=)-zach
There are rumors that the multiplayer may not stay free. Though if the rumors are true it’s a pretty negligable amount. And snuff and puff it’s certainly an either or thing. You’ll be pleased with either. I personaly prefer the xbox controler more but only cause it’s got triggers. yeah triggers. Point being just get one and start enjoying it cause seriously the leap video games have taken since ps2 and xbox is well amazing.
I hadn’t heard those rumors bob, but I hope they dont decide to make multiplayer a playstationPlus only feature, but if so, what the hell …I payed for xbox live for years. I also agree with you on the controllers’ triggers, its a huge improvement from the original xbox controller.
It’s actualy something sony has considered not sure how seriously. Again if they do charge it’s going to be less then the xbox gold. Which is not too bad really. Love the triggers especialy for Gta or other driving games.
Another thing to keep in mind is how long blu rays will be around. physical media is deteriorating fast and with the streaming services (even in high def), is taking over. This is why I opted out with blu ray in favor for roku/netflix streaming service.
Man…I can remeber when people were saying that CD’s would never catch on…we are living in a world of new technology at the speed of light!! As far as Blu ray goes, I must concur with those that recommend the PS3!!
Ditch the PS3 and just by a Sony Blu Ray player with wifi/ethernet port, then if your into Netflix you can stream to the Blu-ray player and even listen to music through Pandora. There is really no reason to spend 400$ on a system that is going to be mainly used for DVDs and movies. Besides, we all know that PS3 is not the better system in regards to graphics or game library. They both play video games in full 1080p HD resolution and I can say without a shed of remorse that there are zero games on PS3 I wish I could play on 360. Most games are available for either system anyway. And about the whole Online gaming price thing, look at it this way: Incentives/Subscription Fees give programers, developers, and creators a reason for making the online experience better. No body wants to do something for free and like the saying goes “you get what your pay for”.
giaach, I have to give you 2 thumbs up for that comment.
Do yourself a favor and use an HDMI cable when you hook up your tv. The best thing ever…
and make sure you have everything set up right.
I agree with giaach. No sense in buying the ps3 unless you want to play games too. The cheapest bluray player you can get, is probably a bluray drive for your pc. If you do want to go that route, then I’d suggest checking out www.newegg.com for any hardware needs. Keep in mind you’d need an HD monitor and decent sound system to enjoy the quality of a bluray disc. @Earthbound: Did you get your name from the old nintendo game?
jbruckus "@Earthbound: Did you get your name from the old nintendo game? " Yea man I did, its not exactly a very creative screen name but,IMO its one of the best(and craziest, like a bad acid trip) games on the super nintendo.Nice shyguy avatar by the way, gotta love classic nintendo.
lol, awesome. I was half expectin’ ya to be like…“what…thats a video game?..no” hahaha - Yeah, classic game, classic console, ya can’t go wrong. Cool of you to notice the shyguy too, man!
@jbruck Yea I used to collect oldschool nintendo games in their boxes. Anything from the original game and watches, nintedo 64, nes, snes, up to the Wii. I think it was to kindof preserve my childhood and relive all the fun had with those games as a kid. Sadly though I sold most of the collection and moved on due to the fact that you can now easily just use wiiware, ps3, xbox for the retro stuff… As well as Its not worth the countless hours of searching, buying, trading, ect…just to never have the time to enjoy them as I wanted to. Anyway…lol, its good to see another retro gamer out there with an interest in snuff.
Im an Xbox man through and through, never been a fan of Sony consoles. However… I do think that as Blu-ray is a big feature for you PS3 is the way to go. But IMHO Blu-ray is a dead duck. I has not picked up a massive amount of support and digital distribution (not that I am a fan of it, I like have media I own and can hold in my hands) is the future. The big guys (MS, Apple, etc) all want it because the profits are huge for them. But PS3 is a good choice for you as it has blu-ray, digital media, and can be used as a media hub too. If you are really serious about online gaming though (even though ill get stick for this) the xbox is the console of choice. Its much slicker online.
If only XBOX would get their act together and put a darn BlueRay player in their system… it would make life so much easier!!
well Sony has the deal with bluray and microsoft has the deal with HD-DVD , which hasnt really been as popular as bluray. I don’t think you’ll see a bluray in a microsoft console, at least not this time around.
Just wanted to post an update: I decided to go with the Sony PS3 350gb Move Bundle. The kids LOVE the Move games… The wife likes her Zumba workout game… and I LOVE the movies on my new 60 inch LED LCD TV. The clarity and detail are unbelievable on Blu-Rays. I also really enjoy Batman: Arkham Asylam and Fallout 3. If you are a nature film junkie get PLANET EARTH: Blu-Ray on a big screen (beautiful) and my favorite regular movies to really show off Blu-Ray are Transformers and 300. PS3 is the BEST! Plus now I get 2 free games once the Playstation store comes back up after the infamous HACK ATTACK! I HIGHLY recommend PS3 if anyone is ever in the same situation to make a decision like I was on original post.
I am in love with the PS3. I wouldnt add any credit cards to it though, not after so many got stolen. Its my favourite system, its got netflix, you can download ps ps2 and ps3 games on it and the graphics are amazing with an HDMI. You can also put music from your iPod or other mp3 on it and play the music on speakers. AND IT HAS METAL GEAR SOLID, THE MOST CHALLENGING GAME EVER.
For all the nature film junkies BBC Life and Blue Planet are also excellent and visually spectacular especially in Bluray
@Brandasaur Try playing the original Metal Gear on the MSX. I felt like I’d actually accomplished something when I beat that game. Damn thing was so hard. I hear that the two MSX Metal Gear games can be played in full on MGS3, although I hope they didn’t change the difficulty at all.
harder then Ninja Gaiden?
Can’t say for sure as I haven’t played Ninja Gaiden. I’ll come back once I’ve done some time with the relevant roms. Anyway, in the original Metal Gear, if you play it on a rom you won’t be able to save unless you still have a tape deck hooked up. Also, you get a gun almost immediately, but can’t use it for half the game until you get the silencer. It has got a pretty awesome soundtrack, though.
