OT: Ambient and other "no-beat" music

Anyone into it ? Anyone can give me nice hints ? Time, particular style, etc. does matter. Need imput to find more material. Ambient, drone, ritual all welcome.

http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?style=Ambient&sort=price%2Casc http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?style=Noise&sort=price%2Casc http://www.last.fm/tag/no-fi http://www.last.fm/tag/noise http://www.last.fm/tag/ambient It’s a huge world of strange music out there. Hunting for the great artists is half the fun! These links should get you started.

“Ambient” covers a lot of ground. Care to be more specific about what you’re looking for? BTW, all music has a beat. It may not be emphasized, as it is in most pop and dance music, but it’s always there.

Ambient is a bit broad. I’ve always been into avant garde keyboard artists and off the path mood music. www.di.fm is a free stream and has an Ambient channel. Also, you can custom make your own with Pandora. Did you want artist suggestions or just sources?

@PipenSnusnSnuff Not trying to start an argument here, just making a point: (VOLUME WARNING! and SLIGHTLY NSFW video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bN14upNp6U This song does not have a beat. If you have a very loose definition of “beat” then it is a very non-static beat.

I must be getting old. Didn’t like that at all. edm

I like the drone of the Tambura.

@pikemopers I’m sure glad my tripping days are over. That was terrible. I don’t get how talent is just thrown out the window. A monkey could make that music. Literally. I hope these people don’t make money off that. I wasted half my life trying to get somewhere making music and this is just terrible and I hope they’re not signed. You want torture? Lock someone up in a cell with that playing for even a few minutes. Jesus.

@mustangii it wasn’t you or your age lol, don’t worry.

Of cource my tripping days were back in the seventy’s. Doobie Brothers, Kansas, CCR, Bad Company, Ozark Mountian Daredevils, #3 Dog Night and others too numerous to list. Now all great Classic Rock. And sometimes Elevator Muzac, lol edm

Strange stuff. Reminds me of trying to chainsaw a steel garbage can.

@spryo . yep difm is my new favorite station i have it on my phone soma fm is also a good station

Not sure I would consider that music, but hey YMMV.

Heh, didn’t think I would get THAT strong of a reaction from that video.

@Prismaster That´s quite a huge field. The spectrum at Ambient music alone is huge. My favourites in the Dark Ambient style are clearly Lustmord, but beware: this would be a bad trip music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koj-Cnxf-hc Cold Meat Industries have quite a large and strong line up of solid Ambient artists. Deutsch Nepal for instance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29AwceNNwUg A lot to be discovered in that genre alone.

MiB you’re wrong about lustmord they’re great for “traveling” places.

No offense meant, Pike.

@bob Couldn´t speak from own experience, but a friend of mine said he had a cruel “journey” in a certain state of mind listening to it. It´s highly dependent of the specific listeners state of mind. Some people freak out when they see spiders or snakes, others are breeding them - angels to some, demons to others.

Also I would consider the didgeridoo an ambient instrument.

Brian Eno is well known ambient artist, maybe one of the first. I personally only like his 4 early vocal albums, which I love!
