What would be considered a miracle has occurred here today - after 12 years of pleading I finally got cable working at my house. I know this is nothing special for 95% of you, but it has been a battle Royal for me. I live 85 miles from Washington in the rural western Maryland countryside. The area I live in has 3 acre lots and was built in 1965. We are over 15 miles from the Telco office, and the copper lines here have deteriorated to the point that the phone really does just barely work, noisy and frequently out. So no DSL and 21k dial up speeds. The forest makes satellite a no go. 8 years ago we tried to get the cable in here but the right of way was disputed by a local who held the whole thing up, he refused to let them across his property. The phone line comes from an area to the south that was the jurisdiction of another county, and that cable company has no license here. I was using a mobile broadband card and still got spotty service and slow speeds due to our remote location, even with a top of the line amplifier ( no cell phone reception here without a booster). Any way, the man who disputed the right away died and his son wanted cable so they were given access. A year ago we were chosen to be the first fiber optic trial customers in the county. It took a year to dig five miles of trenches, and the trench to my house was 576 feet of solid rock outcrop, the cost was over 2500 dollars for the trenching ( free to me). So, today the installer was here and we now have fiber connected phone and TV, and my internet speed is over 12 MB, lightning fast. I have lived so long without broadband I thought it would never happen. Special day here for me.
Gotta love that!
^5!
Congratulations! That’s gotta rock after all these years…
Awesome…congrats man! I kinda know the feeling going from mobile web straight to broadband was an exhilarating experience as well! Although we didn’t have to wait nearly as long as you did…welcome to your newly acquired freedom!!!
WOW!!! I’m happy for you man! I’m pretty sure we will “see” more of you now!
That is a fantastic story, congratulations Whalen! You must feel on top of the world, I’m really glad for you. Have a wonderful time online!
That’s impressive, I live in the middle of England and I get a crap 200-400kbps at peak times. Never go with Talk Talk. Enjoy that high speed connection !
going from dial-up to DSL was an amazing thing. Sad part is you get used to it a little too quickly in my opinion. Though it does feel like discovering a whole new internet capable of things you shouldn’t tell you’re wife too much about. Or you’ll have wait while she hogs up the computer.
Lol bob!!! easy solution for that…just get 2 cheap netbooks that are wifi capable…that is if your cable company offers the wireless option…which I hope they do.
Once I got used to high speed I can’t even use dial up it makes me see in red. Its sad but true.
I’ve have a 50 megabit cable connection, anything less drives me potty!
I know Mr. 89 (that is your proper name right?). It amazes me how at one point a high speed modem was incredible.
Thats great new mate!! I bet if you knew all the dude had to do was die you could have found a way to get the cable in a long time ago. hint hint
Congratulations!!!
