Well I was fired from my job at Marshall Chrysler last Thursday. I realy don’t know the reason why. Didn’t have a large amount of comebacks, (vehicles returning to the shop with the same problem). The reason givien use abuse of equipment??? I have set resumes out online, filled out a few applications, filed for unemployment. It is rainning so I can’t mow the grass. Read alittle. I have satillite tv and have over 200 chanels and can’t find anything I want to watch. This is the 1st time in 30 years I have been without a job. I was totaly shocked when I was let go. I should have a job within a week, shortage of good mechanics in the US. Last time I was out of work was when President Reagen was in office. edm
Enjoy your unexpected break is my advice. Have a few days relaxing, you’ll be glad of it when you’re woking hard again. I know the feeling of being bored to tears. I’ve been on the sick for over 3 1/2 years, and signed off till at least April 2013. I am legitimate though, not one of these that scrounges because they are to lazy to work, and the only thing they do is breed. I do feel guilty as hell getting £ and doing nothing for it, but I couldn’t work at the minute. I don’t know how I’m going to be day to day, I’ve no sort of stability. I do feel for you though I was laid off once, as the shop I was working in closed. Luckily I’m an alcohol licensee, and got a Bar manager’s job within 3 days. The longest I was out of work before this was 3 weeks, since the ageof 16 when I left school. I’d love to get back into work, but something cash in hand to start with, (Ok not legal but wtf, the govt don’t deserve any tax), that I could do as and when, until i’m able to work legit and permanantly. Like I say don’t worry about it too much, something will come along soon and you’ll be wishing you were at home bored to tears. Good luck mate, hang in there. Stefan
Mustangii - Ouch that must smart. I was sacked from a job many years ago and although I hated the work it still hurt to ‘get the bullet’. But Stefan’s right. This calls for enjoying the spare time. And a proper mechanic can always find work. Best Wishes Peter
I had a temp job at a greenhouse that just ended Friday. I’m not too worried though, since I started working at 16 I’ve been out of work for a grand total of 3 weeks, so I’ll be back to something or other soon enough. Until then, I’m enjoying smoking my pipes, snussing, snuffing, listening to music and catching up on some reading.
edm – That sucks. I like what Stefan wrote about not worrying. And Peter and yourself are surely right about the need for good mechanics. I know what you mean about tv, which I don’t have. But whenever I’m in motel I’m amazed how many channels of crap exist! As I was writing to edm, your post popped up shiki. Take it easy, men.
Remember the post about the truck I bought from them? still owed them money on it and some parts I needed to repair my wife’s pt cruiser gt turbo. so it was give the truck back or lose my last 2 checks. The tow truck from Marshall came to pick it up and he told me it was John the dealership Manager that wanted me gone. Here’s the story about that. I did a new vehicle check in on a Jeep Compass. John bought it for his Daughter. 3 weeks after he got it the Left front lower ball joint bolt broke. The nut had stripped and the bolt came out. the left front tire turned left and pulled the axle out of the tranaxle. It was covered under Warrenty, but he blamed it on me. A PDI does not include checking all the bolts and nuts on a vehicle. They just had to find an excuse to get rid of me. edm
Well, I’ve got my time occupied for the next few days at least. I just managed to fix my turntable, so it’ll be back to ripping my box of records for me. Still have about 50 classical LPs to rip.
I feel for ya Mustangii. I’m house bound and unemployed as well. I guess you can use the spare time to get those things done you’ve been putting off for so long. We all have that list. Anyway, hope you get a job soon, I can’t imagine a professional mechanic not being in steady demand for long. Hang in there man.
Constructive dismissal…
hang on, edm … i agree with Spyro … you will not be outta work for long.
Wow… Sorry to hear the bad news. Hopefully you have unemployment coming… and if so use a week or two to get your mind straight and then plan for the future. One door closing leaves another open… or something like that. Anyway keep your head up, things will work out.
@mustang on a lighter note, that’s why he should’ve bought her a Land Rover lol bloody expensive but built like a tank. Stefan
Mr Mustangi the mechanic. You do realize that the moment you really start enjoying your free time is when the offers will roll in. So it’s in your best interest to start hoping they don’t hire you quite yet.
@mustangii sorry to hear that…I never turned bolts at a dealership but I’ve known enough guys who did and I’ve heard similar stories. Best of luck to you finding a new gig, but do enjoy the free time for now as well!
Sorry to hear about you being shafted, I’ve been there myself. I agree with you that an experienced mechanic shouldn’t take long for a hire.
Well filled out about 6 applicatons, sent out 20 resumes. watching reruns of Las Vegas
Going to go fill out app with them tomarrow. edm
Ya might want to hit the road and stop by some places. I had a guy quit and another happened by about an hour later. Hired him and kept him for 6 years till I closed up. Good mechanics are very hard to find. Keep a positive attitude. Good luck, my friend.
Also have 2 interviews tomarrow, One is at a motorcycle dealership. engines are engines. and transmisions are transmissions are. need a change of pace. I have a 160 IQ and read at 800 wpm with 98% comprehension. Can’t spell worth a lick though, funny right? I switched over to electrical maintanance for about 8 years, took electronics in high school so I knew the basics. read everything I can get my hands on. If there is a book or website on something I can fix it. Do all my own home repairs from plumbing to air conditioning work. I can fix about anything. also do all my own computor repairs. The only reason I went to Tech school is to get the diploma. My Father was the same way. went from deisel mechanic in the Airforce to Ground power, to Liquid O2 production to refrigeration. I should be able to find something. but enjoy working on mechanical stuff. edm
make killer robots. There is a huge market if you can pull it off.
Do you have access to a flux capacitor and a DeLorean by any chance?
160 IQ? and I thought my 141 was high… You’re a super genius if that’s the case…
No flux capacitor or DeLorean, if I had one would go back to the 70’s and tell myself to leave the drugs and booze alone and study harder, lol. Yeap 160, was tested in the 3rd grade, was reading Shakespeare’s plays by that time. One of the questions on the test was who is Puck, I knew it was a character From A Midsummers Night Dream. But being the I couldn’t get mt head around Calculas and Trig in Collage, I decided to work on Cars and Trucks.
Your IQ can change and it normally does.
Do what you love and love what you do.
as the saying goes," There’s a thin line between genius and insanity" the 70’s probily dropped it a few points. edm
Lol mustangii damn right I’ve got 148 IQ, and am a certified nutter. I’m on anti-psychotics, anti-depressents, anti-anxiety tablets the whole caboodle. Stefan
Keep us posted Mustangii. BTW in the UK you can find the highest density of Mensa members at Her Majesty’s pleasure. It’s the ones who stay out of prison I respect. Good on you Mastangii.
@Tc2642 the smart people obviously.
it’s a slightly clever joke. Glad you got it. Sometimes that kind of joke just slips past the radar. That’s when people tend to get mad at you.
at the least. As in we won’t be suprised to find out more then slightly. But slightly definatly has a lock down. Love the avatar isn’t that from black adder?
I have a neighbor who is quite handy, a machinist by trade. Between jobs recently he started doing odd repair jobs for friends, neighbors, and family. I’d bet he made a tidy sum and helped a few people out in the process.
It’s that time of year. I was let go last thursday. Since then I’ve tore up the job boards and websites getting my resume out. A few bites even with a hopeful dream job in MN. Now I’m getting bored. The job boards have thinned out so i’m getting bored. Transferred all my music and movies to backup drives today. That was after sleeping in. Looked at the calander and thought it was Thurs, but its only wed. Sigh…
@mustangii, ha I dig whatcha mean…they tested my IQ high years ago but I’ve never given a rap about it; I enjoy fixing my own stuff and while I write automotive diagnostic manuals for a living, I enjoy researching anything I can get my hands on (tonight is Chinese junks/sampans and dense plasma focus fusion). Interesting that your dad worked on aircraft and liquid gases; I’ve always been fascinated by gas turbines and I’ve toyed with the idea of a solar-powered water/zeolite adsorption-chiller air conditioning system. Of course being a dad of two on a single income my time and cash are somewhat limited for exploring such ideas, but ideas themselves are fun and cheap!
IQ doesn’t always mean anything, either- there’s plenty of homeless bums that are brilliant!
I love Blackadder, except the first series. The only one I liked in that was when Miriam Margolyes was a Spanish princess wanting to marry Edmund. Jim Broadbent’s translations are fooking hilarious! Stefan
Yeah I don’t put any trust in the numbers, but I can pick up things easy. But the side thing is that mundane things like trivia are stored quite easily. My wife hate playiny trival prosuit with me. Like all the shows the Rowan Atkinson stared in. edm
I quite liked the first Blackadder series. Some classic lines like the “The Black Vegtable” still have me rolling. Edmund is a totally different character though. Also Brian Blessed in his high volume glory is eye wateringly funny. Although not my favorite of the bunch, the “Goes Forth” series had some fabulous interaction between Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. You get some of that in the ealier ones, but the fourth series was the first one in which they were both regulars. Those two guys aught to do more together.
OK trivia man: What character did Rowan Atkinson play in a James Bond film?
Nigel Small-Fawcett in never say never again. love those bond films too, lol. edm
On the genious/insanity note, here’s a funny story my Motorcycle Engine teacher told me. A guy gets a flat tire in front of an insane asylum, while changing the tire he accidentally drops the lug-nuts down the storm drain. Wondering what to do, a wandering resident tells him “Why don’t you just take one from each wheel so you can at least drive it to get more.” The man says: “Why that’s a brilliant idea, why are you in here if you’re so smart?” And the man replies “I’m in here because I’m crazy, not stupid.”
@TaylorD Very clever joke.
Unlucky mate, hope something new comes up soon. Never lost a job, and I hope I never do, can’t be nice at all I always remember my psychology teacher telling us to take IQ tests with a pinch of tests. Apparently there’s far too many flaws with them far them to be accurate
last job I lost was cause someone died so at least your unemployment has that going for it. Oh just to clarify I had nothing to do with the person dying it closed the whole office.
@mustangii Very good. I hope you are not using IMDB for the answers. Lousy Bond film, BTW. It was just a gimmick to get Connery back in the role one more time. Now, what was his character’s profession/postion? @Tc2642: Yep. I’m aware of those, but I want more. Lol. They’re big shot stars now though and I guess the last time they were together was the Blackadder reunion special. They can play serious roles and people take them seriously, but to me they were a fantastic comic duo. They had such awesome chemistry together.
I was bored one day and took three IQ tests in a row (I had access to a set in the job I had at the time). I scored 98, 145 and 128.
Well that makes sense. There are diffrent i.q. tests and according to wikipedia i.q. is famous blend of pipe tobacco.
well A bout of food poisoning and I am feeling better today. Still unemployed. edm
Oh man I feel for ya. I’d rather face the Inquisition than deal with nausea. Glad your’e over it tho.
well I guess it wasn’t food poisoning, just a 24 hr bug. My grandson had it 1st, then me, my son and daughter in law and my wife. Have a Job interview tomarrow. small independent shop. tried of doing warrenty work connected with dealership shops.
Good luck on the interview. There’s an indie shop here in town that’s connected with NAPA. Amazing place, you could eat off the floor in their garage.
I have a job, Start monday working on Mersedese Benz’, audis, Jags and others. will be a nice change of pace. and no warrenty work, lol.
Grats man! That’s awesome news.
Congrats, that was really quick, you must be one heck of a mechanic! Hope you had a good vacation
