Ordering Snuff To Canada

Hello Everyone, I hope this post finds you well. I have just been granted membership, and would like to say thank you for that. I am brand new to the world of Snuff, however have been a long time dipper and smoker. I am about to put in my every first order for Snuff and after looking at previous posts want to know who here has ordered snuff online into Canada? If you have, where did you order from, how large was your order and were you hit with duties and taxes? I am looking to order the “Sample Selection 10 for the price of 9” direct from Toque Snuff, but am a little worried about excessive taxes and duties I will encounter on the 100 grams of snuff at Canadian Customs. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks for your time. JayYat

I have never had any problems ordering snuff into Canada and I have made orders a hell of alot bigger than 100g.

Just consider that n9inchnails may be lucky… I have received a fairly large order direct from Wilsons of Sharrow that sailed right through customs unscathed. And on the other hand, I ordered less than $30 worth of snuff from Toque and was hit with a $35+ duty bill (here in BC). It is a crap shoot. Be prepared for a hefty tax bill and be happy when you don’t get one. If you follow any of the other forums (like the Snus forums) you will find a LOT of Canadians, in all provinces, getting absolutely hammered by customs, with fees far in excess of the stated tobacco tax amounts. It doesn’t seem to happen to nasal snuff - - perhaps the CRA has a special hatred for snus. BTW, based on the actual tobacco tax in BC (similar to taxes in the rest of the country) you could expect to pay around $35 for tobacco taxes for your 100 g order. People in Ontario and Newfoundland seem to have fewer customs issues than people in other provinces. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the comments. I’m happy to pay the customs, I was just worried they were going to be like hundreds of dollars. 35$ for 100 grams wont brake the bank tho. Haha

Hi JayYat, Geraldo’s only the second person I’ve heard getting hit for, and paying, the tax in the last four years. However on one occasion a Canadian customer had ordered six for five bullets and got a tax bill for $90. He told them to re check and sent them the correct tax details. They just sent it on and didn’t charge. On another occasion a customer told them he was rejecting it and to send it back, which they did, we resent it and it got through the second time with no tax.

Awesome. Thanks everyone for your time. I really appreciate it. I just put my order in, and cant wait! Cheers JayYat

Ha ha, so Roderick, you are saying that Canada Customs just hates ME? It is entirely possible. Glad to hear that Toque customers generally don’t have issues. I will order again soon and we will see. I have to re-iterate though - it IS a crapshoot. I have ordered a bunch of e-cig stuff (liquid and hardware) and it has all come through just fine (about 6 separate small orders so far). There is a group of about 5 people in Vancouver that I keep casual contact with, and they average about 50% of their orders being seized/returned to sender, across about 50 orders. I refused my Northerner order about 2 months ago, as CRA put $78 in tax on 5 tiny cans of snus (portions). I couldn’t get any of the assessment appeals forms at my small town post office, and I wasn’t going to pay that for something I might not even like. I have seen plenty of Canadians post that they get shipments of <500 g of pipe tobacco with no tax, and that there is a tax holiday on those amounts and under for pipe tobacco. The border guards where I live told me that there is no “tax holiday” of any kind for any tobacco product, and that they would charge me about $150 if I tried to bring in 1 pound of pipe tobacco. Mind you, they are now asking if I got gasoline in the US - apparently they are now angling to collect gas taxes that people are saving by zipping over the border. So…just don’t be shocked. Remember that all the Canadian government is interested in is collecting taxes and fees. When I cross back into Canada from the US, they never ask for ID, citizenship, or anything. They are only concerned with alcohol, tobacco and any other taxable items I might be bringing back. It isn’t “border security”, it is “tax security.” Geraldo (apparently targeted by the Gov’t for special tax consideration…)

i’ve never had any problems. i’m in Ontario. I just got 100g in the mail and no issues.

Anyone know what a normal timeline for shipping to Canada is?

3 to 7 days, usually

When I was ordering from Ontario (for about 2 1/2 years,) I got my snuff from Mars Cigars (in Pennsylvania) in about a week.

Im in Kelowna (near Vancouver) and snuff takes about a week and a half for me.

Thanks everyone for your input. I just wanted to see an average timeline, so I could assess when a package has gotten lost/held by customs/stolen. Just a little FYI for any future Canadian inquiries. Ordered from Toque: Date Ordered: 29/08/2011 Received in Toronto: Date Received: 13/09/2011 *Please note however there were 2 holidays that fell between this order. The 29th of August was Summer Bank Holiday in the UK and The 5th of September was Labour Day in Canada. Therefore it should have taken 10 business days. Cheers, JayYat

And any tax?

Nope, my package slipped right on by! I am actually enjoying my VERY first pinch ever (Toque Coke), and all I can say is “WOW!” Roderick, you may have just become my new best friend! Haha. Your products truly are fantastic, and your customer service is even better. Thank you so much! I look forward to years of future business. Cheers, JayYat
