One month in…

S

Just a few rhuminations and reviews of what I’ve tried after using snuff for a month while reducing smoked tobacco… I started with some Hedges, bought from a small tobacconist. I’m sure it’s a damn fine snuff if you like mentholated, but I can take it or leave it – there are many more snuffs out there, so Hedges is an occasional snuff. My first mail order was direct with Wilson’s of Sharrow, and from there I decided that I like snuffs light to medium-dark in colour, fine grind, and floral or fruity. I’ve found my technique; take one nostril’s worth with a spooning device (keys, tweezers, guitar pick, whatever I have to hand), place on the anatomical of the left hand, and use the spooning tool to get rid of any clumps. Cover the right nostril with right finger, and slide the hand under the nostril, maintaining a distance of about half an inch, while breathing in gently through nose. Repeat process for other nostril. I’m going to be ordering a 25g tub of WoS Gold Label (my favourite so far) and I wonder if anyone can make some recommendations. I have three glass containers to contain my first three 25g orders (found these at my local branch of Wilkinsons). Here’s what I have or haven’t enjoyed so far… I’d really appreciate some recommendations for the next order… WoS: Gold Label – My favourite!! Seems to deliver the nicotine most effectively of all snuffs those I’ve tried, and has the best experience for me. Definitely going to be my first 25g order. Rose – very much enjoying it. SP100 – very nice too, but has been somewhat left alone due to the wonders of Gold Label. Rum & Raisin – Not loving or hating it, but haven’t given it much of an audition. The scent is subtle but noticeable. Chocolate Orange – makes me hungry and doesn’t seem to hit the nicotine spot very well. The orange I like, but not so sure about the chocolate… Irish Toast #22 – this is my first Toast and I can’t honestly place what it is that I don’t like about it, or what I do like about it, but what I don’t like outweighs what I do like – it might be a grower, and not something I’d likely throw away. Maybe it is the particular tobacco blend. Best Dark is too dark, too moist and a little too coarse. Poeschl: Red Bull – very pleasant as the menthol is not as strong as Hedges. Gawith (but not gawith) Apricot – very, very nice, with a mild apricot and menthol combination. Toque’s almond toast – the base is very similar to WoS Irish Toast #22 and the almond is just subtle enough to enjoy. Samuel Gawith: Don’t like the ten gram containers!!! Black Coffee – despite being quite coarse, I think the coffee makes it a keeper. Any coarser and I wouldn’t enjoy it. Wild Duck – I think I would enjoy this if it was a lot less coarse. Can’t abide the bits going up my nose, much more irritating than a fine grind. I’m sure the crumbs at the bottom of my rolling tobacco tub are finer! Lavender Dark – Too coarse. I think my pepper mill could do a better job! Not too dark, but I haven’t given this snuff much of a chance. I wonder, could I use my partner’s pestle and mortar to make insufflable? Gold Mull – I’m giving this a wide berth – it smells like a cross between furniture polish and the mixed incense smell you get walking around a hippy shop. The scent really, really lingers. Makes my nose sting like no other snuff I’ve tried. Shame as the grind and moisture is really nice. Should I try a scotch? I’ve always assumed that they’d be really dark, dry and charred but what I’ve read recently suggests otherwise. Any thoughts, comments, recommendations GREATLY appreciated.

WoS grand Cairo is similar to gold label. I really enjoy them both. I believe the tobaccos used and the grind are the same.

@snuffereastlancs - I’d agree with @lunecat here: GH’s are definately worth some further investigation, particularly the floral ones as they are excellent; Wallflower, Flourette, Jockey Club and Ambassador are all worth a punt in my book. Wallflower and Jockey are rarely out of my rotation. I note that you haven’t mentioned F&T, Kendal Brown by them is very pleasant [if a little atypical for the style] but the violet gives it a very refreshing, cleansing and vibrant scent profile. Scotches are wicked snuffs: but are very fine and dry; similar to toasts. It usually take a while before you come to appreciate these types of snuff. SWS Auld Alliance is brilliant, but it is rather course, if your after a luxury snuff I’d recommend Abraxas premium batch fine as the grind is easier going. Good luck!

Give de Kralingse snuffs a looksee. they are wonderfully scented delights. some are a little more coarse than others, but still a wonderful array of your fruity/floral variety, but with a twist.

If you like it fine and fruity or floral. Try McChrystal’s apricot and violet, both are very strongly scented.
